Police officers shot during protest in Ferguson

Two police officers have been shot during a protest outside a police station in the US city of Ferguson, Missouri, witnesses said.

The shooting occurred early on Thursday morning after several dozen protesters had gathered in front of the Ferguson police department, just hours after the city's police chief, Thomas Jackson, announced his resignation.

A few dozen demonstrators fled following the sound of gunfire around midnight with some screaming, "They hit a cop," according to a Reuters photographer at the scene.

Police could not be reached immediately for comment. http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2015/03/police-officers-shot-protest-ferguson-150312054832767.html

National Baked Scallops Day Scallops are one of the most popular shellfish in the world. These meaty mollusks are low in fat and are delicious sauteed, deep fried, or baked! Baking them leaves out a lot of the butter and fat that otherwise go into cooking this lean, white seafood. Put scallops on the menu and in the oven for National Baked Scallops Day! http://www.cdkitchen.com/recipes/articles/view/2/1/National-Baked-Scallops-Day.html

Girl Scout Birthday Day Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low assembled 18 girls from Savannah, Georgia, on March 12, 1912, for a local Girl Scout meeting. She believed that all girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. With the goal of bringing girls out of isolated home environments and into community service and the open air, Girl Scouts hiked, played basketball, went on camping trips, learned how to tell time by the stars, and studied first aid. http://www.girlscouts.org/who_we_are/history/

World Kidney Day Created in 2006 as a joint initiative between the International Society of Nephrology and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations, World Kidney Day is designed as a health awareness campaign. At present, the date is observed in close to 100 countries around the world.

World Kidney Day aims to raise awareness of kidney-related diseases and of the overall importance of our kidneys to our health. It also tries to highlight preventative measures, in an attempt to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney disease and related health problems, on a global scale.

If it is detected early enough, Chronic Kidney Disease is treatable. However, CKD is becoming increasingly prevalent around the world. In addition to educating the public, World Kidney Day is designed to teach or remind medical professionals of the important role they can play in detecting problems and aims to encourage more systematic screening of patients with diabetes. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-kidney-day/

Judge Brockmeyer Takes Leave From Florissant Courts

Judge had earlier resigned from Ferguson and Dellwood

In response to the resignation of Judge Ronald Brockmeyer as municipal judge in Ferguson and prosecutor in Dellwood, Florissant Mayor Tom Schneider has requested that Judge Brockmeyer take a leave of absence from the city’s municipal court. Schneider said Brockmeyer has accepted the leave of absence.

“We appreciate the seriousness of the current events and realize that Florissant does not exist in a vacuum,” the mayor said in a statement. “I intend to review all the pertinent elements that contribute to the successful administration of the business of the court and most importantly our elected Municipal Judge Dan Boyle.” The mayor said he would not interfere with “sovereign powers vested in our elected judge.” He hasn’t been able to talk to Judge Boyle (as of Tuesday night) because his wife was in labor delivering their first child.

The City of Ferguson received the resignation of Judge Brockmeyer on March 9. The resignation was effective immediately and the Missouri Supreme Court appointed Judge Roy L. Richter who began to preside over the Ferguson Municipal Court cases on Monday, March 16. The first court docket was to be on Thursday, March 19.

World Plumbing Day World Plumbing Day is an international event, initiated by the World Plumbing Council, held on 11 March each year to recognise the important role plumbing plays in societal health and amenity.

The WPC, through its member countries and its partnerships with bodies like the World Health Organisation, works all year round to promote the benefits of safe plumbing, but in 2010 it decided to launch the concept of embedding a single day on the world’s calendar dedicated to plumbing. The idea was that on March 11 each year people all over the world would pause to reflect on the vital role plumbing plays in preserving their health and way of life – in the case of countries like ours – or in building sustainable disease free futures for millions in the developing world.

And so World Plumbing Day was born, and it is big and getting bigger all the time. Today, on the continents of Australia, Europe and Africa events are organised to mark the occasion and draw attention to the importance of good plumbing and sanitation. In China, England, Germany, India, Canada, North and South America and many more places industry leaders – like us here today – governments, policy makers, and community based organisations are promoting World Plumbing Day.

Right now, today, in offices and training colleges, on worksites and in classrooms, and in legislatures and Parliaments around the world, World Plumbing Day is being marked and recognised. In media releases and magazine articles in Chinese, Hindi, English, German and Spanish the message about the link between good plumbing sanitation and human and environmental health is reaching millions of people each March. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-plumbing-day/

Registered Dietitian Day With the abundance and variety of food available in the Western world these days, registered dietitians are becoming more popular as people seek greater understanding of what they should eat and why. Why not celebrate Registered Dietitian Day by sending your dietitian a quirky bouquet of edible flowers as a thank you for all their hard work?

If you don’t already visit a dietitian you may be wondering what they can do for you. Dietitians often play a role in managing weight through healthy eating, but they can also advise on suitable nutritional intakes for a variety of ailments and disorders. Increasingly, part of the role involves running educational programs about the causes and effects of obesity in an attempt to prevent problems later in life. Find a registered dietitian locally to ask how you can improve your lifestyle and boost your health today. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/registered-dietitian-day/

Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD) is an annual, nationwide observance that sheds light on the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls. Every year on March 10, and throughout the month of March, federal, national, and community organizations come together to offer support and hope, reduce stigma, share information, and empower women and girls to learn the importance of HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment. This year marks the 10th observance of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

Today, about one in four people living with HIV in the United States are women 13 or older. Only about half of women living with HIV are getting care, and only four in 10 of them have the virus under control. Women face unique HIV risks and challenges that can prevent them from getting needed care and treatment. Addressing these issues remains critical to achieving an HIV/AIDS-free generation. http://www.womenshealth.gov/NWGHAAD/about/index.html

Fill Our Staplers Day Is there anything more annoying in this world than going to use a stapler, only to find it has run out of staples? Yes, yes there is. A huge number of things. However, that does not detract from the fact that it can be extremely annoying, especially if you are at work, under time pressure, and have no idea where the spare staples are held.

Originally created by the Dull Men’s Club, Fill Our Staplers Day attempts to solve this super-serious problem. Occurring twice a year, on the day after the Sunday when the clocks change, the day encourages people, especially office workers, to refill their stapler, with a view to minimising the chances of a workplace crisis.

So if you work in an environment where staplers are shared with others, do your bit for humanity and use this day to ensure it is well stocked for future use. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/fill-our-staplers-day/

Get Over It Day One of the most interesting holidays to be found is known simply as “Get Over it Day“. This celebration was invented in 2005 when a man was having a rather difficult time overcoming the loss of his girlfriend. In essence, this day is meant to help people get over their troubles and tribulations while doing so in humurous ways. It is also considered a day to remember that others in the world will certainly have it worse than us, so Get Over it Day is also a day to feel a bit humble.

Another coincidence (or perhaps not) is that this holiday falls directly between Valentine’s Day and April Fool’s Day. So, mixing a bit of partying and romance is certainly not out of the question. While this is still a rather young holiday in comparison with others, Get Over it Day is undoubtedly one of the more appropriate days to sit back, relax and decompress during these modern and hectic times. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/get-over-it-day/

Napping Day Napping Day provides an opportunity to adjust after changes to daylight savings when losing an hour of sleep due to ‘springing forward’. Mid-afternoon naps are an integral part of most cultures, and scientifically proven to be good for you – so here’s to justifying a few hours of well deserved kip! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/napping-day/

Panic Day It was Rudyard Kipling who penned the immortal lines: ‘If you can keep your head, while all around are losing theirs… you’ve probably forgotten it’s Panic Day’.

Imagine a whole day devoted to what most of us do every morning, at least Monday to Friday. With deadlines looming, alarm clocks failing and traffic jamming, panic comes naturally, yet we’re expected to quell our natural urges, take a deep breath and carry on regardless. No more!

Panic Day is the day to let rip and succumb to the terror, giving free reign to this much suppressed emotion. Flap your arms and scream, run around in circles, if it helps, or just stay in bed quivering with your head under the pillow.

Be sure to spread the holiday spirit to friends, family and colleagues, too. A good panic is contagious. However you celebrate Panic Day, you’ll feel better for it. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/panic-day/

National Peanut Cluster Day

As winter winds down and spring is about to burst forth, there’s no better time of year to celebrate this sweet cluster of peanutty goodness.

Why do peanut clusters get their own holiday? Well, I’d have to say it’s because so many people love crunching on the good taste of peanuts. Most foods in America have their own day set aside for celebration and sometimes we don’t need much more of a reason to celebrate, do we?

So what is a peanut cluster? It’s nothing more than a crunchy bundle of peanuts held together by melted chocolate. http://nationalpeanutboard.org/recipes/celebrate-national-peanut-cluster-day/

International Women's Day In 2015, International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on 8 March, will highlight the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a historic roadmap signed by 189 governments 20 years ago that sets the agenda for realizing women’s rights. While there have been many achievements since then, many serious gaps remain.
This is the time to uphold women’s achievements, recognize challenges, and focus greater attention on women’s rights and gender equality to mobilize all people to do their part. The Beijing Platform for Action focuses on 12 critical areas of concern, and envisions a world where each woman and girl can exercise her choices, such as participating in politics, getting an education, having an income, and living in societies free from violence and discrimination.
To this end, the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is the clarion call of UN Women’s Beijing+20 campaign “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!” Join governments and activists across the world in commemorating the ground-breaking Conference of 1995. We celebrate the many achievements that have come since then and galvanize action to address the gaps that still remain in making gender equality a reality.

National Crown Roast of Pork Day
A crown fit for a serious fan of the other white meat - March 7 is National Crown Roast of Pork Day!

Turn your normal meal into a royal feast with this white-capped crown of pork glory.

Known as the crown roast, pork loin is gathered into a circle with the rib bones pointing upwards like the peaks of a crown. Usually, this contains two rib racks, or 12 ribs from one pork loin, tied together with twine. This also means "Frenching" the ribs - slightly cutting and cracking the bone so they can be molded into a crown.

The meatiest part of the impressive crown roast is at the bottom, facing inwards. And any serious pork fan knows that the rib portion of the loin is one of the choicest and tastiest cuts. http://eatocracy.cnn.com/2012/03/07/national-crown-roast-of-pork-day/

National Cereal Day Cereal (at least, in terms of breakfast cereal) is a surprisingly modern invention. Dating back to colonial America, cereal has become an incredibly popular way to start the day. Sock Monkey Day The sock monkey's most direct predecessors originated in the Victorian era, when the craze for imitation stuffed animals swept from Europe into North America and met the burgeoning Arts and Crafts Movement. Craft makers began sewing stuffed animals as toys to comfort children, and, as tales of the Scramble for Africa increased the public's familiarity with exotic species, monkey toys soon became a fixture of American nurseries. However, these early stuffed monkeys were not necessarily made from socks, and also lacked the characteristic red lips of the sock monkeys popular today.

John Nelson, a Swedish immigrant to the United States, patented the sock-knitting machine in 1868, and began knitting socks on an automatic machine Rockford, Illinois as early as 1870. On September 15, 1880, the Nelson Knitting Company formed, producing the "Celebrated Rockford Seamless Hosiery," selling them under the name of the "Nelson Sock." The iconic sock monkeys made from red-heeled socks, known today as the Rockford Red Heel, emerged at the earliest in 1932, the year the Nelson Knitting Company added the trademarked red heel to its product. In the early years, the red-heeled sock was marketed as "De-Tec-Tip". Nelson Knitting was an innovator in the mass market work sock field, creating a loom that enabled socks to be manufactured without seams in the heel. These seamless work socks were so popular that the market was soon flooded with imitators, and socks of this type were known under the generic term "Rockfords". Nelson Knitting added the red heel "De-Tec-Tip" to assure its customers that they were buying "original Rockfords". This red heel gave the monkeys their distinctive mouth. During the Great Depression, American crafters first made sock monkeys out of worn-out Rockford Red Heel Socks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sock_monkey

National Frozen Food Day Since 1984, National Frozen Food Day has been celebrated annually on March 6th. Frozen foods got their own special day more than 50 years after they first appeared in the 1930?s.

The process of frozen foods was first developed by Clarence Birdseye in 1930, and became available on grocery store shelves in and around Springfield, Massachusetts.
“Clarence Frank Birdseye II (December 9, 1886 – October 7, 1956) was an American inventor, entrepreneur, and naturalist, and is considered to be the founder of the modern frozen food industry” (Wikipedia)

The initial product line featured 26 items, including 18 cuts of frozen meat, spinach and peas, a variety of fruits and berries, blue point oysters, and fish fillets. Consumers liked the new products and this is considered to be, the birth of retail frozen foods.

The frozen food industry plays a big part in our lives. There is usually more than one aisle of frozen foods in the grocery stores, full of everything: some of which include, breakfast foods, fruits and vegetables TV dinners and ice cream. One of our all time favorites, of course, is the frozen pizza. http://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-frozen-food-day-march-6/

Employee Appreciation Day CLEVELAND, Ohio - Showing employees that they are valued involves more than just the boss bringing in a box of doughnuts or handing out certificates, or even gift cards, for a job well done.

Friday is the 20th anniversary of Employee Appreciation Day. What better time to offer a primer on the importance of bosses conveying to good employees that they are well regarded? What better person to offer such advice than Bob Nelson, who came up with this way for bosses to honor the people who report to them? He said showing such thankfulness shouldn't be limited to a one-day observance.

"This should be a daily thing," he said. "Not every person every day, but every day a manager should do something for somebody to show appreciation.

"Making sure that people are appreciated should be sort of a no-brainer -- but few do this," Nelson said. "Managers have all of these excuses: They are too busy. They don't think it is their job to do this. No one ever shows them any appreciation, blah, blah, blah." http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2015/03/employee_appreciation_day_is_f.html

Dress in Blue Day The idea for ‘Dress in Blue Day’ was originally come up with by Anita Mitchell, a stage IV colon cancer survivor who had lost a close friend and her own father to the disease. Greatly saddened by the fact that both of those tragedies could have been prevented, Ms. Mitchell saw a need to bring greater awareness to a cancer not many people wanted to discuss. So, in 2006, she worked with her children’s school to coordinate a recognition day. That very year in March, students who normally had to wear uniforms to class were allowed to wear a blue outfit of their choice, if only they made a $1 donation to colon cancer awareness.

There have been some hopes to turn all of March, and not just the first Friday of the month, blue by promoting colon cancer awareness all month long, much like National Breat Cancer Awareness Month takes place every October. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/dress-in-blue-day/

National Absinthe Day This naturally green and highly alcoholic drink has a distinct flavor that combines green anise, wormwood, sweet fennel, culinary herbs and at times, a whole lot of sugar.

Absinthe has quite a history and memorable taste. Gaining popularity in France during the 1800s among artists and writers because it was pegged as particularly bohemian, it made its way to the U.S. as a famed favorite during Prohibition.

A chemical compound, thujone, could be traced in scant amounts to absinthe, and was immediately blamed as an addictive psychoactive drug with harmful effects. It was banned in the U.S. and Europe in 1915, but that didn't stop people from quaffing "la fée verte," or its nickname, "the green fairy."

But it turns out that the harmful effects were greatly exaggerated, and absinthe received a welcoming revival in the 1990s after the bans were removed. Now, nearly 200 brands are produced here and across Europe. http://eatocracy.cnn.com/2012/03/05/national-absinthe-day/
