Obama and Biden endorse McGinty.

Obama, Biden throw support behind Katie McGinty in U.S. Senate race

President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have endorsed former state Environmental Secretary Katie McGinty in the April's competitive Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate.

In a written statement released Wednesday, Obama touted McGinty's work on energy and climate change issues, as well as Pennsylvania's expansion of Medicaid coverage through the Affordable Care Act.

"Katie is a true champion for working families," he said.

McGinty has received near-unanimous support from Pennsylvania's labor unions as well as Democratic Party leaders, but continues to trail retired Navy admiral and former U.S. congressman Joe Sestak in public opinion polls.

Toomey opposes Supreme Court nominee going forward:

http://www.bizjournals.com/philadelphia/morning_roundup/2016/03/toomey-react-supreme-court-nominee-merrick-garland.html

Senator Pat Toomey was adamant from the start that he wouldn’t consider any Supreme Court nominee put forward by President Obama.
The reasoning was that the next President should get to fulfill the vacancy

Sen. Toomey doubled down on that view in an interview with Marc Levy of the AP.
“It might be just as well not to have a hearing that would, sort of, might mislead the American people into thinking that this is just about the qualifications of the candidate, because it’s bigger than that,” the Senator told Levy.

As a result, it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that Sen. Toomey rejected President Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland on Wednesday.
“With the U.S. Supreme Court’s balance at stake, and with the presidential election fewer than eight months away, it is wise to give the American people a more direct voice in the selection and confirmation of the next justice. Should Merrick Garland be nominated again by the next president, I would be happy to carefully consider his nomination, as I have done with dozens of judges submitted by President Obama.”

Mass shooting in Wilkinsburg, Allegheny Co.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. said a shooting in which gunmen opened fire on a backyard party, killing five people in Wilkinsburg, was a planned and calculated attack.

Five dead; three hospitalized. Two of the victims were sisters, two were cousins. This is unbelievably shocking and heart-breaking.

Today is World Kidney Day:

http://www.worldkidneyday.org

Here is an opportunity for advocacy for a very worthwhile cause: (emphasis added)

On Thursday, February 25th, 2016, the Living Donor Protection Act (H.R. 4616/S. 2584) was introduced by Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) and Representative Michael Burgess, MD (R-TX) in the House of Representatives, and Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) in the Senate. This bill will protect living organ donors and remove barriers to donation by prohibiting insurance companies from denying or limiting life, disability and long term care insurance to living donors, and from charging higher premiums. The bill also clarifies that living organ donors may use time granted through the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to recover from donation. Email your Representative and Senators to support this important legislation.

Kidneys can be donated by a living individual in good health. The wait list for a kidney transplant is long and many individuals will die before ever receiving a kidney transplant. There are over 100,000 people waiting to receive a kidney transplant. In 2014, 17,108 kidney transplants were performed, one-third of which were made possible by living donors. Living donors make a substantial contribution to increasing the number of transplants performed each year. We must act to ensure living donors are protected and that barriers such as fear of job loss and unfair practices by insurance companies are removed.

Please personalize your emails to your elected officials to share your (or your family’s) story as someone waiting on the transplant list, as an organ donor, or as a transplant patient. Thank you for contacting your Representative and Senators on behalf of kidney disease patients and those living kidney donors who deserve these protections.
Thank you,
Kevin Longino
CEO, National Kidney Foundation
