femmocrat's JournalToday's Google Doodle: Who was Jagdish Chandra Bose? It is his 158th birthday:
Born in what is now known as Bangladesh in 1858, Bose was chiefly a scientist who made several contributions to various fields, including physics, biology and archaeology. But Bose is perhaps best known for his pioneering work in biophysics.
To honor Bose's achievements on his 158th birthday, Google published a doodle Wednesday that features an invention of his born out of his investigations into plant science. Bose's crescograph measures plant responses to various stimuli, proving a parallel between animal and plant tissues.
Bose also made significant contributions to the world of radio and microwave sciences, becoming the first to use semiconductor junctions to detect radio signals and discovering millimeter length electromagnetic waves. For this, the IEEE named him one of the fathers of radio science.
And if that wasn't enough, he was also an early writer of science fiction, for which he is considered the father of Bengali science fiction.
For all this, and much more, a crater on the moon is named in his honor.

Today's Google Doodle: Louisa May Alcott's 184th birthday:
Released Tuesday, the doodle, created by artist Sophie Diao, portrays the book's characters Beth, Jo, Amy, and Meg March, as well as Jo's best friend Laurie.
The March family of Little Women was based on Alcott's family, and the character of Jo was Louisa's vision of herself.
In addition to being a writer, "Alcott was a suffragist, abolitionist, and feminist," Google noted.

I would have volunteered....
until I read the crazy hoops to jump through. I don't even know three registered voters in this backwater precinct. Then it had to be notarized (in person) and delivered to the judge of elections. I give huge thanks to those who went through this ridiculous process.
I read that about 1500 precincts (out of over 9000) have made the cut. It would be nice if Gov. Wolf would take a look at how restrictive our state election laws are, including no early voting and draconian absentee ballot rules.
It is in the courts!

Randi Weingarten's statement on Betsy DeVos:
WASHINGTONIn response to President-elect Donald Trumps nomination of Betsy DeVos to lead the Department of Education, AFT President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement:
The president-elect, in his selection of Betsy DeVos, has chosen the most ideological, anti-public education nominee put forward since President Carter created a Cabinet-level Department of Education.
In nominating DeVos, Trump makes it loud and clear that his education policy will focus on privatizing, defunding and destroying public education in America.
DeVos has no meaningful experience in the classroom or in our schools. The sum total of her involvement has been spending her familys wealth in an effort to dismantle public education in Michigan. Every American should be concerned that she would impose her reckless and extreme ideology on the nation.
We have an obligation to all children in America. Thats why weve fought to ensure that struggling schools get fixed, that we fight for kids to have the powerful learning, the social and emotional and wraparound services, and the great teachers they need. Thats why we fight for parents to have the voice they need and communities throughout the country to have the local decision-making for their schools and the investment they need, so we do everything we can to help all children have a great public education. What this pick means is far from ensuring that every child has the option of a great public educationthe many who have it now will lose it. Thats been the experience of 25 years of privatizing: It helps very few, and many students now go to schools that have faced years of austerity and disinvestment.
Betsy DeVos is everything Donald Trump said is wrong in Americaan ultra-wealthy heiress who uses her money to game the system and push a special-interest agenda that is opposed by the majority of voters. Installing her in the Department of Education is the opposite of Trumps promise to drain the swamp.

Today's Doodle: Happy Thanksgiving in American folk art.
Evocative of American folk art, with quilt-like patterning and simple shapes, todays Doodle, rendered in a rich harvest-colored palette, is an ode to this season of togetherness, says Googles Doodle Blog.
Google offered a brief history lesson on the holiday, telling of its origin nearly 400 years ago when American settlers met the Native American Wampanoag tribe:
