Former congressman Sestak to kick off U.S. Senate campaign this week

Joe Sestak will make it official Wednesday.
The former congressman and retired Navy admiral intends to announce his candidacy for U.S. Senate in an appearance at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, his campaign said.
Sestak, 63, a Democrat from Delaware County, will try to unseat Sen. Pat Toomey, 53, a Lehigh Valley Republican who narrowly defeated him in 2010. He is the only challenger to announce to date.
Neither Sestak nor Toomey could be reached for comment.

Lesley Gore has died.

https://news.yahoo.com/party-singer-songwriter-lesley-gore-dies-68-201459170.html

NEW YORK (AP) — Singer-songwriter Lesley Gore, who topped the charts in 1963 at age 16 with her epic song of teenage angst, "It's My Party," and followed it up with the hits "Judy's Turn to Cry," and the feminist anthem "You Don't Own Me," died Monday. She was 68.

Gore died of lung cancer at New York University Langone Medical Center in Manhattan, according to her partner of 33 years, Lois Sasson.

"She was a wonderful human being — caring, giving, a great feminist, great woman, great human being, great humanitarian," Sasson, a jewelry designer, told The Associated Press.

Brooklyn-born and New Jersey-raised, Gore was discovered by Quincy Jones as a teenager and signed to Mercury Records. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a degree in English/American literature.

Gov. Wolf imposes a moratorium on the death penalty:

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Newly elected Gov. Tom Wolf imposed a moratorium on the death penalty in the state Friday, calling the current system of capital punishment "error-prone, expensive and anything but infallible."

Wolf said the moratorium will remain in effect at least until he receives a report from a legislative commission that has been studying the topic for about four years.

"If we are to continue to administer the death penalty, we just take further steps to ensure that defendants have appropriate counsel at every stage of their prosecution, that the sentence is applied fairly and proportionally, and that we eliminate the risk of executing an innocent," Wolf said in a memorandum announcing the policy.

The Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association said Wolf had no authority to impose the moratorium, calling it a misuse of the concept of a reprieve.
