Does Inhofe know the US Virgin Islands are in the US?

Inhofe's complaint about Sandy relief is that there was "stuff in there for the Virgin Islands."

Is he really too stupid to know that hurricanes travel up the coast from the Caribbean, that the Virgin Islands is part of the US, and that they were hit by Sandy?

Can a person that stupid actually occupy a seat in the US Senate?

Can we skip the "OMG Westboro Baptist" thread this time

I just posted a comment about how these and other religious bloodsuckers will be jumping on the OK tragedy.

Since there are those who obviously did not understand the comment, let me spell it out more clearly:

There will be, very shortly if not already, persons who will ascribe this tragedy to teh gay, abortion, having a black president, or the other things that piss off their angry and malevolent God.

There will be, shortly after that, a thread on DU about "OMG Westoro Baptist...."

Let's just take it as a given that WBC, Pat Robertson, and all the usual suspects will weigh in, and do not deserve the dignity of a thread of their own here.

Viral star Kai the hatchet-wielding hitchhiker wanted for murder

"Smash, Smash, SmAAaash!!!"

Those words made "Kai the hatchet-wielding hitchhiker a viral sensation. That was his description of how he swung a blow for justice in Fresno to stop a large driver who allegedly ran over and attacked a PG&E employee.

Now those words could come back to haunt him. New Jersey prosecutors say Kai, 24, a.k.a. Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, is wanted for the blunt force trauma slaying of a lawyer.

The Union County homicide task force has a murder warrant for the arrest of McGillvary,a homeless drifter, in the slaying of attorney Joseph Galfy in Clark, N.J.

ABC: Obama AWOL From Texas Air National Guard

ABC news is reporting they have received a copy of an email dated April 1, 1968 in which a Texas Air National Guard commander reports that Barack Obama had not reported for duty for ten months.

According to the memo, the commander expresses concern that the impact on readiness of his unit "may jeopardize security of Americans in Benghazi for the next 40 years or so."

Thanks Mom

My mother passed away, ripely, last year, and it didn't hit me that it was the end of Mother's Day as a "thing" for me.

She fought tirelessly against nuclear power for the last decades of her life based on the premise that spent fuel can be deadly to untold future generations. She chaired the Coalition for Nuclear Power Plant Postponement for 20 years, working with the group's founder June Eisley to educate the public, legislators, and power company executives about the wisdom of foregoing nuclear power in Delaware. AND SHE SUCCEEDED. She was the first legal intervener to stop the proposed nuclear power plant in Summit, DE. Brilliant at research, she shared her extensive knowledge with many people at home and abroad, submitted statements to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and testified at hearings through July 2010. She spoke softly and with wit, but always carried a big bibliography.

Born in Austria, Frieda's experience of war and Nazi nationalism propelled her to fight against the Patriot Act, to march for peace, and to speak out against the folly of war.

She was a dynamo of dogged determination and a great inspiration. May she rest in peace.

My first Mother's Day without a Mother

I understand that there are issues around "Mother's Day" and so forth, but I had a peculiar thought today which I just wanted to put out into the ether.

I hope a very good lawyer represents Ariel Castro

I hope that Ariel Castro gets a highly competent and skilled advocate, who will zealously defend his rights, who will challenge every procedural step and every piece of evidence and how it was obtained. I hope that his case is heard by an impartial jury, and that he has a right to appeal any error made in his trial.

Or, if he pleads guilty, I hope he does so knowing that he has a right to a trial and fully understanding his options and likely consequences of that decision.

If he is convicted, I hope he is not subject to cruel and unusual punishment.
