Old Zen saying: "if you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him".

It means to keep an open mind and not believe something because some prominent practitioner says "you must believe this because it is doctrine and correct", go by your own experience rather than blindly following what some zen master or lama or Burmese abbot or New Age cult leader says.

If Newt is the Puke candidate this will be the nastiest election of my lifetime

I'm 25 and the pure hatred the far right oozed in 2008 is the worst I've seen in a presidential election in my lifetime. If Newt is the nominee it's going to be much worse than even 2008.

There is a spammer on the loose in Good Reads.

I've alerted a bunch of threads by the spammer already.

The Red Flags of Quackery

January 8, 2012

I'm sick of the misconception that Socialism = Command Economy.

This socialist totally rejects the notion of a command economy, I believe in a co-op-based market economy, with only things like healthcare, utilities, etc. controlled by the government.

Dr. Robert Atkins. Was he a genius, a quack, both?

I strongly agree with him that the high-carb, low-fat diet promoted by mainstream nutritionists is actually unhealthy and fattening (And IMO is all about maximizing the profits of Agribusiness). In my experience when I eat carb-rich foods I'll feel hungry again in a couple hours, but when I eat a meal with lots of protein and fat I actually feel full for as long as 10 hours afterwards, and therefore I eat less.

On the other hand, he seems to have went off the deep end in his later years into the nutritional supplement woo. Thinking, for example, that high doses of Vitamin B12 cures Autism.

I find it ironic that both parties are the opposite of what they were in 1860.

In 1860 the Democrats were the party of RW racists and slave-owners who blocked tariffs, and funding for infrastructure, while the Republicans were the party of equality, investment in infrastructure, protectionism, and free land for farmers.

Now it's the GOP, the party of Lincoln and abolitionism, that's full of RW racist douchebags while the Dems dominate in the places that were core Republican strongholds in 1860, and elected a black guy as president!

What is your favorite American English dialect?

I don't have a single favorite, but I like the R-dropping coastal Southern dialects (think Jimmy Carter), and the dialects of New England (pahk da cah in hahvahd yahd!)

And, of course, I like my own accent, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Central_American_English , which is also developing elements of the Northern Cities Vowel Shit (so when I say "cat" it sounds something like "ket", but with the vowel held longer).
