Rand Paul reverses position, supports drone killings of American citizens on American soil

?1361369761
Yeah, that is a hell of a title, isn't it? But it's apparently true. Rand Paul, fresh off standing ovations at CPAC where they were busting a gut with pride over his brave, brave anti-drone stance, has entirely reversed his position:

So in the span of a little over a month, Rand Paul has gone from being so outraged over the mere possibility of using drones to kill American citizens on American soil that he's willing to launch an old-school filibuster to a new position far more extreme than anyone else discussing the topic, an assertion that drones can be used to kill American citizens on American soil if you catch them in the act of a suspected crime. You just can't use the drones to look for the crime, though. I don't know what Constitution Rand Paul has been reading, but I'm fairly certain he's been licking toads while reading it.

Of course, what this really means is that Rand Paul's entire famous filibuster was, in the end, bullshit. It was a lie. He didn't filibuster because he was outraged that the Obama administration might send unmanned drones to target and kill American citizens, he just outright endorsed that practice. So why did he filibuster? As a mere political gimmick, a fundraising tool, a chance to bluster about "freedom" to the base on an issue that neither he nor that base really had shred one of concern about to begin with? How many in that base are now feeling suckered, right now, with their "Stand with Rand" stickers and their idol's supposedly deep-held belief in not sending drones out to kill random Americans who a government agent has determined probably deserved it?

New York Post’s pathetic coverage - Inaccuracies about bombing pathetic

By Elias Groll

Foreign Policy

In all fairness, the paper has gotten some things right in its coverage. As Vanity Fair points out (for another priceless take on the paper’s editorial strategy, see the Onion):

The New York Post correctly reported that the Boston Marathon takes place in Boston, Massachusetts.

"Boston" is spelled correctly.

The current governor of the state is Deval Patrick

Participants in the Boston Marathon are, in American English, colloquially referred to as "runners."

So what’s going on at the Post? In its initial story on the attacks — the one that pegged the death toll at 12 — the paper has simply scrubbed its initial, inaccurate reporting from the story. The number "12" is nowhere to be found, nor is a death toll. Meanwhile, its story on the Saudi "suspect" remained online without a correction, editor’s note, or any kind of acknowledgement that it is completely false.

Massachusetts General Hospital is a medical facility.

a good article which give a run down on the outrageous mistakes made by the Post:

Russia’s North Caucasus Rebels Deny Link to Boston Bombings

Source: Bloomberg

Rebels in Russia’s North Caucasus region denied any link to the April 15 attack on the Boston Marathon in a statement posted on the vdagestan.com website.

The Caucasian Mujahedeen are not fighting with the United States of America,” according to the statement, which was attributed to unidentified Mujahedeen commanders in Dagestan. “We are at war with Russia, which is responsible not only for the occupation of the Caucasus, but also for heinous crimes against Muslims.”

An FBI-led probe is looking into a six-month trip suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, an immigrant of Chechen descent, took around two years ago to Chechnya and neighboring Dagestan, both regions of Russia that have been embroiled in Islamist separatist movements.

vdagestan.com claims to be the official website of what it terms the “Dagestan Province of the Caucasus Emirate” and features calls for jihad and images of Islamist fighters.

I still hope the bomber is a white American By David Sirota for salon.com

The identity of the person behind the Boston bombings will strongly affect our response -- even O'Reilly agrees!

The reason, then, to hope that the bomber ends up being a white American is because the double standard may prevent an overreaction to the heinous attacks in Boston. Indeed, if the bomber ends up being a white American, there’s a decent chance we will not see a redux of the post-9/11 period when we (among other things) initiated reckless wars, passed privacy-trampling bills like the Patriot Act, overspent on the Pentagon and targeted wide swaths of the population for surveillance/warrantless wiretapping.

The same cannot be said if the bomber ends up being a Muslim — in that case, the double standard will work in the opposite way, encouraging another post-9/11 redux and all the attendant bad policies that came with it.

By the way, you don’t have to be a person of color or a political liberal to hope the bomber ends up being a white American. You just have to be among the groups of Americans who don’t like stuff like preemptive wars, the Patriot Act, warrantless wiretapping, the drone war, an unsustainable Pentagon budget and a broken immigration system. By their own rhetoric, some of those groups must include many self-described conservatives — after all, they purport to care about civil liberties and say they want to reduce government spending.

That gets back to the original point: The reason to hope that the bomber is a white American is because in a country where white privilege and double standards so obviously affect our national security reactions, that outcome will better guarantee that the reaction to Boston is a bit more measured.

Making cuts to Social Security the national Democratic Party agenda is something to celebrate?

Okay it is almost certainly not going to pass - Because the Republicans are going to block cuts to Social Security benefits in spite of the White House's proposal to cut Social Security benefits. But still now it is official - the Democratic Party led by the President supports cuts to Social Security and the Republicans in Congress are against cuts to Social Security benefits? Yeah, of course the story behind the fact that on the national level the Democratic Party led by the President supports cuts to Social Security and the Republicans opposes cuts to Social Security benefits get complicated. We all know that there is more to it that that. But it does not change the FACT that on the national level - the Democratic Party led by the President now supports cuts to Social Security benefits and the Republican Party lead by the House and Senate leadership opposes cuts to Social Security benefits. That is the simple reality whether you like it or not.

Whether or not there is or ever was any actual intention of actually passing Chained CPI- Do you

support or oppose President Obama proposing a reduction in Social Security benefits through CPI?
