Hillary vs. Bernie on Frankenfood

Why would voters choose Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton?

Food is a good reason for Democrats and Republicans to abscond from their "politics as usual" party loyalties and vote for Bernie Sanders, the 38-year Independent running against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic primary. This article deals with both candidates' positions on two issues that relate to the food we eat - GMOs and the Trans Pacific Partnership.

Hillary Snip:
How is Hillary personally involved in supporting big agriculture? The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), which gathers leaders to solve the world's problems, promotes Monsanto, the maker of RoundUp® and RoundUp Ready® seeds. Hugh Grant, Monsanto's Chairman and CEO spoke at the Clinton Global Initiative conference in September, 2014. Ms. Clinton's top campaign advisor, Jerry Crawford, was a lobbyist for Monsanto for years and is now the political pro for her Super PAC, "Ready for Hillary." Clinton spoke in favor of the government's Feed the Future (FtF) program, a USAID funded, corporate-partnered program that brings RoundUp Ready® technology to the most vulnerable populations of the world. Monsanto and Dow Chemical support Hillary and Bill's 'Clinton Foundation' with generous donations.

Bernie Snip:
Senator Bernie Sanders represents Vermont, the first state in the nation to pass a "right to know" GMO labeling law. He authored an amendment to the 2013 farm bill that would have given states the ability to require labeling so that they don't have to fight for it, state by state, through propositions on the ballot. Sanders' amendment was defeated 71 to 27 in the Senate, even though 93 percent of Americans want GMOs labeled.

"An overwhelming majority of Americans favor GMO labeling but virtually all of the major biotech and food corporations in the country oppose it." says Sanders. Vermont's labeling law is scheduled to go into effect on July 1, 2016. "The people of Vermont and the people of America have a right to know what's in the food that they eat," Sanders said.

Personal message:
It took until 1800 for our population to reach 1 billion. By 1960, we were at 3 billion. Today we are at 6 billion and in the next 50 years, we will reach close to 10 billion people on our planet. Our children are growing up in a different world.

Sustainable agriculture is important to our survival. Big Ag is not the answer. Allowing GMO's that many times require more pesticide and have been modified to fight nature in ways we do not fully understand is not a good idea. Introducing GMO food without testing for safety is also a bad idea. Good or bad, who can argue for testing by independent labs versus testing on the population as they do today?

Local and chemical free is the answer.

Here are a few articles to support my position.

Unworthy victims: Western wars have killed four million Muslims since 1990

Landmark research proves that the US-led ‘war on terror’ has killed as many as 2 million people, but this is a fraction of Western responsibility for deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan over the last two decades.

Last month, the Washington DC-based Physicians for Social Responsibility (PRS) released a landmark study concluding that the death toll from 10 years of the “War on Terror” since the 9/11 attacks is at least 1.3 million, and could be as high as 2 million.

The 97-page report by the Nobel Peace Prize-winning doctors’ group is the first to tally up the total number of civilian casualties from US-led counter-terrorism interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The PSR report is authored by an interdisciplinary team of leading public health experts, including Dr. Robert Gould, director of health professional outreach and education at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, and Professor Tim Takaro of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University.

Yet it has been almost completely blacked out by the English-language media, despite being the first effort by a world-leading public health organisation to produce a scientifically robust calculation of the number of people killed by the US-UK-led “war on terror”.

How can we continue our failed foreign policies?

Democrats... if this doesn't turn your stomach, I have no respect for you.

We are war mongers and this should be on everyone's list to stop.

January 9, 2016

You make my point.

You point out... "People demanding, whining, and kicking because they want everything right now -- their way and only their way-- and refuse to admit that's not possible. Even though the constant roiling resentment on this forum reveals most are not entirely deluded."

Call it what you will but this is how change is brought about.

Your Global Warming argument supports the need for a hard left turn as well.

We can't fight Global Warming while looking out for big energy profits. Hillary is not going to upset the apple cart. Bernie will.

Don't be afraid of hope and please, do what you know you should. Vote for Bernie.

January 9, 2016

I see a glimmer and I see a fire.

You said: "Now, can't one find at least a glimmer of hope in that? Change is always the cumulative product of many and occurs over time. It's already started and is continuing."

Totally agree. It is starting but, and as a Democrat I can't believe I have to say this... what about Peace? Why is Hillary supporting regime change?

I voted for Barack for many reason but I expected an end to our continuous wars. That didn't happen.

Bernie is my choice for many reasons as well. However, he is the left. He is the candidate that will take our country where it needs to go for the sake of our children.

War, Global Warming and Social Justice. Bernie is the one.

A slow turn is happening but the world is not waiting for us. America needs a hard left turn now.

January 7, 2016

Valid points.

I don't consider this a conspiracy. I think money in politics is rampant on all sides.

The Clinton Foundation deserves respect.

But, I also think that Hillary will lean towards those that contributed in one area or another. It's what politicians do.

Bernie does not have those influences.

January 7, 2016

Oh yes he is.

Instead of the same 'ol same 'ol we're going to get a revolution. A new era.

America takes a hard left turn, just in the nick of time.

January 7, 2016

I'm not against "military action".

I'm against regime change - you know, toppling governments.

Our military should not be used for profit. They should be peacekeepers.

Veterans should be top priority and they should be honored with top benefits and healthcare. We should not fight wars if we can not afford it's veterans.

Sanders has been a in the Senate a lot longer. He's voted a lot more period.

Sander's view on war is moral and Hillary's is not.

My opinion.

Hillary, As Secretary of State, Showered Billions on Defense Industry for Contributions

Money Quote:
"......have used Hillary Clinton's Secretary of State position as an endless bank where their combined sales have seen 75 billion dollars in increase in commercial military sales far beyond even the Bush administration during the three years that Hillary served as Secretary of State."

Now, watch Bernie here and the contrast is amazing:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1251&pid=979660

"Today is a tragic day for humanity."

"...and for the children. 30,000 of whom in the third world will starve to death today while we spend billions to wage this war."

How can Hillary supporters hear this and continue to support a war monger bent on regime change?

STOP THE WARS!

Michael Briggs, a Sanders' spokesman, took aim at Gensler in his response.

"Sen. Sanders won't be taking advice on how to regulate Wall Street from a former Goldman Sachs partner and a former Treasury Department official who helped Wall Street rig the system," he said on Monday.

January 2, 2016

Yes. This is why he will win...
