Contesting a hidden thread.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021271354

Protesting is patriotic. I protest the presence of a police state against protest itself, that it is the job of those of our elected officials to protect and insure Democracy (the will of the people). Massive police repression of 1st Amendment rights is unConstitutional, is unpatriotic.

I am petitioning through this post to my government for redress of grievances. Hiding this post is against my 1st Amendment rights. Do not put me into a "free speech zone" because the police state applies to everyone. It is here, even if you have not yet run up into it. It is our government's job to serve the interests of the people.

Are you seriously going to interfere with my 1st Amendment right to protest a genuinely repressive response to free speech simply because the =fact= of this repression is discomfiting to some? To bring the unacceptable to light is the job of protest. Change occurs when enough are outraged against the unacceptable to make things change. That which is, must change.

Seriously? This is very tricky ground. I am seeking redress of grievance from the government for which I'd personally voted as they gather to present themselves. It is not democracy if they don't listen. Please reopen my thread as it is my right to post fact requiring change. Remember Change? It's what we were promised, and I want it, because it's going in the wrong direction. People need to know it's going in the wrong direction.

The Aftermath of Occupy Will Surpass the Gains of 1960s Activism

http://truth-out.org/opinion/item/10125-the-aftermath-of-occupy-will-surpass-the-sixties

A tsunami of citizen activism, initiated by Occupy Wall Street, is poised to wash over American society. The coming battle to correct the grotesquely unequal distribution of wealth and power in this country is likely to have an even more profound impact on our society than what occurred in the 1960s.

Fifty years ago, a few white students like me were outraged to find that the sugarcoated view of America we had been taught in the 50s did not match reality. The notions of justice and human rights we had internalized motivated our actions, and as idealists, we opposed the Jim Crow laws in the South and the needless killing in Southeast Asia.

Young activists taking to the streets today harbor no illusions about justice in America. They are cynical, worldly wise and unemployed; many are weighed down by debt. They know they have few prospects for meaningful or even gainful employment. They protest in their own economic self-interest. They are a wholly different phenomenon than the 1960s activists.

Edit: I've run into 1960's activists here and elsewhere who decry having failed to change the world. I say you DID change the world, forever, in a drastically meaningful manner. Can you possibly imagine a world without hippies, peace, love, Woodstock? Try to for a minute. It is horrifically bleak. And the powers that be would not call today's activists "hippies" in an attempt to demonize them, if "hippies" hadn't evidently had a drastic and genuinely feared effect! It's a back-handed compliment. THANK YOU!

Ten undocumented immigrants marching for their rights, arrested at DNC.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=325018484261580&set=a.286909221405840.62134.243015162461913&type=1&theater

Edit: DUers arguing for this? Does everyone remember that unless you are a member of a 1st Nation, YOU are an illegal immigrant?

Will this be in the mainstream media? There is an astonishing amount of police badgering protesters, far beyond anything one could possibly consider Democratic.

http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2012/09/ten_undocumente.php

"Charlotte police arrested ten undocumented activists after they shut down an intersection just blocks from the Democratic National Convention in a coordinated act of civil disobedience.

The activists, all passengers on the Undocubus as part of the No Papers No Fear campaign that we wrote about earlier today, got off their bus at the corner of Fourth and Tryon in downtown Charlotte at 4pm, then led supporters and a substantial press entourage racing through the streets a few blocks northeast to the site of their action. Once in the intersection, they dropped a large banner and sat on it, holding up signs that read "Undocumented."

The activists were quickly encircled by a large contingent of officers on foot and on bicycles, but police waited more than 40 minutes before taking action. In the meantime, the protesters, ranging in age from their 20s to late middle age and including a mother and her daughter, passed around a megaphone explaining why they were there: to force Barack Obama, who has presided over more deportations than any other president in history, to live up to his rhetoric of offering dignity and justice for immigrants."

The Romney campaign spent at least $120,000 to promote Romney/Ryan as a Twitter trending topic Thurs

http://www.salon.com/2012/08/31/romney_drops_100k_on_twitter/?source=newsletter

The Romney campaign is officially the first campaign to buy space on Twitter. The Wall Street Journal reported that it purchased the hashtag, “#RomneyRyan2012,” as a nationally promoted trending topic on Thursday night. The campaign’s digital director, Zac Moffatt, told Mashable, “I really think that this convention is achieving what it set out to do, which was to provide a convention without walls.” As of 9 p.m. last night, the hashtag had amassed 10,000 unique tweets. The whole promotion cost Romney’s campaign at least $120,000.

However, the effort may not have paid off. The Twitter stream for “#RomneyRyan2012? is filled with anti-Romney sentiments, many of which were retweeted hundreds of times due to being so prominently displayed:

Mitt Romney pulled off an amazing feat tonight. He spoke for 30 minutes without saying anything. #RomneyRyan2012 #RNC2012
