Santiago police responded to hooded protesters in the Chilean capital with tear gas and water cannon, marring a largely peaceful demonstration by more than 100,000 students and union workers demanding fair distribution of wealth.

The violence began ahead of nationwide demonstrations on Wednesday when separate pocket of protesters hurled Molotov cocktails at a police station, prompting a police crackdown. The protesters also stormed a restaurant and used its chairs as barricades, tying up traffic along some of Santiago's busiest roads, AP reported.

Police arrested 102 people, while four officers were injured in the violence.

The Chilean government had strong words for the demonstrators.

(Geez...haven't we all heard by now of police in various countries showing up to protests and being violent and encouraging violence in order to justify a crack-down on protests the local government doesn't want? More at the link.)

#Solidarity with strikers in #Chile fighting for free education. Major ports and roads blocked!
http://www.santiagotimes.cl/chile/transportation/26378-chiles-major-ports-and-roads-blocked-in-nation-wide-strike

National strike erupts across the country in major cities like Valparaíso, Antofagasta, La Serena, San Antonio and Calama.

Workers in major cities the length of the country rallied in solidarity with the student movement Wednesday by barricading ports and copper mines.

The national strike, called by the Confederation of Chilean Students (Confech) — a university student umbrella organization — joined together students, teachers, labor unions and workers in support of free and quality public education, alongside other general demands such as better union rights, wages and health plans.

Though protest coverage thus far has generally been focused on Santiago — where more than 45 high schools and 25 universities are occupied or on strike — many major cities also mobilized protest efforts by shutting off critical ports and mines.

“I would first like to highlight the immense diversity of the organizers in the march, which include port and copper workers who will freeze or delay their tasks, demonstrating that the educational movemnt is transversal,” said student leader Andrés Fielbaum in an interview with Terra.

I'm so angry, so distraught by the fact that SCOTUS have gutted the Voting Rights Act, that I've asked my foundation to release my film, "Election Files," for FREE. This is a no-BS, no charge download of my series of investigative reports for BBC Television and Rolling Stone.

"No limitations" on CIA agents assigned to NYPD

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/27/nyregion/cia-sees-concerns-on-ties-to-new-york-police.html?_r=1&

WASHINGTON — Four Central Intelligence Agency officers were embedded with the New York Police Department in the decade after Sept. 11, 2001, including one official who helped conduct surveillance operations in the United States, according to a newly disclosed C.I.A. inspector general’s report.

That officer believed there were “no limitations” on his activities, the report said, because he was on an unpaid leave of absence, and thus exempt from the prohibition against domestic spying by members of the C.I.A.

Another embedded C.I.A. analyst — who was on its payroll — said he was given “unfiltered” police reports that included information unrelated to foreign intelligence, the C.I.A. report said.

The once-classified review, completed by the C.I.A. inspector general in December 2011, found that the four agency analysts — more than had previously been known — were assigned at various times to “provide direct assistance” to the local police. The report also raised a series of concerns about the relationship between the two organizations.

So Bush and Cheney have you scared enough of TERROR that you'll give away the Constitution?

Most of this crap began with them and the neocons' Project for a New American Century. After they stole at least one Presidential election. So now you believe the death of the 1st, 4th, and 5th Amendments to the Constitution and arguments against the 2nd are somehow acceptable?

This is extremely useful to Bush, Cheney, and the neocons. They need more people to keep arguing to strengthen the surveillance state and end the founding principles of this country. What Hitler, Kruschev, and more couldn't do, you are doing, even arguing for it.

IRS targeting included searching for groups called "Progressive" or "Occupy"

IRS targeting included searching for groups called "Progressive" or "Occupy" http://ow.ly/mlsCM

http://www.boston.com/business/personal-finance/taxes/2013/06/24/new-irs-chief-inappropriate-screening-was-broader/EouWCeb1D4IhdADJyJr5yO/story.html

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Internal Revenue Service’s screening of groups seeking tax-exempt status was broader and lasted longer than has been previously disclosed, the new head of the agency acknowledged Monday. Terms including ‘‘Israel,’’ ‘'Progressive’’ and ‘‘Occupy’’ were used by agency workers to help pick groups for closer examination, according to an internal IRS document obtained by The Associated Press.

The IRS has been under fire since last month after admitting it targeted tea party and other conservative groups that wanted the tax-exempt designation for tough examinations. While investigators have said that agency screening for those groups had stopped in May 2012, Monday’s revelations made it clear that screening for other kinds of organizations continued until earlier this month, when the agency’s new chief, Danny Werfel, says he discovered it and ordered it halted.

The IRS document said an investigation into why specific terms were included was still underway. It blamed the continued use of inappropriate criteria by screeners on ‘‘a lapse in judgment’’ by the agency’s former top officials. The document did not name the officials, but many top leaders have been replaced.

Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee released 15 lists of terms that the IRS agency used and has provided to congressional investigators. Some of the lists, which evolved over time, used the terms ‘‘Progressive’’ and ‘‘Tea Party’’ and others including ‘‘Medical Marijuana,’’ ‘'Occupied Territory Advocacy,’’ ‘'Healthcare legislation,’’ ‘'Newspaper Entities’’ and ‘‘Paying National Debt.’’
