Jose Andres is nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, congressman confirms

Ever since José Andrés and his small nonprofit group took it upon themselves to feed hungry Puerto Ricans following the near-knockout punch of Hurricane Maria last year, the celebrity chef’s name has been whispered in talk about potential nominees for a Nobel Peace Prize. Today, Rep. John Delaney (D-Md.) confirmed that he has nominated the restaurateur and humanitarian for the 2019 award.

Delaney, who has already announced his presidential campaign for 2020, said he could not discuss any specifics of his nomination or what motivated it. The five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the annual prize, discourages nominators from making any public announcements. The deadline for nominations is Feb. 1, and the committee will announce the laureates next October.

---

Andrés’s nomination comes as little surprise. As the face of ThinkFoodGroup, the parent company behind Jaleo, Oyamel, Minibar and other Washington-area restaurants, Andrés has been spending as much time in disaster zones as in kitchens over the past year or so. His Twitter account has been a real-time diary of his humanitarian efforts in Puerto Rico, Florida, North Carolina, Guatemala and many other locales served by the volunteers of World Central Kitchen, the nonprofit group he founded after the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010.

---

This Thanksgiving, Andrés was not at home carving a turkey with his friends and family. He was in California, preparing hot meals for survivors of the Camp Fire, along with fellow chefs Tyler Florence and Guy Fieri. They served 15,000 meals on Thanksgiving Day.

Stacey Abrams' Allies Sue Georgia, Alleging an Unconstitutional Election System

Allies of Stacey Abrams, the Democrat who came up just short in Georgia’s gubernatorial election this month, sued the state on Tuesday, alleging that its election system violates the Constitution and federal voting rights laws.

The lawsuit cites an extensive list of voting problems in Georgia, including voter registration issues and Election Day snafus that prevented an unknown number of people from voting. It argues that the secretary of state and state board of elections systematically disenfranchised some voters and effectively disenfranchised others by creating conditions that made it harder for people of color to vote.

---

The lawsuit asks a federal judge to force Georgia to change how the secretary of state and elections board administer elections in Georgia. The long list of requests include blocking the state’s current practice of purging infrequent voters from the rolls; ending the use of electronic voting machines without a paper trail; and ensuring that local election officials are properly trained so that inadequate equipment and misinformation do not not disenfranchise Georgia voters. The lawsuit doesn’t challenge the results of the November 6 election, which Abrams lost to Republican Brian Kemp by 1.4 percentage points.

------

Although the lawsuit does not seek to change the results of this year’s election, it asks the federal courts to weigh in on whether an election like this one is legitimate, or whether the totality of problems amounts to an unconstitutional system.

I hope they are successful. The only way to make sure that elections are fair is to start at the local and state level.

In the United States, right-wing violence is on the rise

Over the past decade, attackers motivated by right-wing political ideologies have committed dozens of shootings, bombings and other acts of violence, far more than any other category of domestic extremist, according to a Washington Post analysis of data on global terrorism. While the data show a decades-long drop-off in violence by left-wing groups, violence by white supremacists and other far-right attackers has been on the rise since Barack Obama’s presidency — and has surged since President Trump took office.

Here are 10 incredibly fake facts that Trump supporters think are true

Americans, divided and polarized as they are, live in two distinct worlds. In one world, the earth is not flat, climate change is real and Bill and Hillary aren’t pimping kids out in the basement of a pizza restaurant.

The other world is devoid of reason, evidence and pretty much any type of historical facts. Despite the fact that Trump voters have been fleeced by the biggest con man in the world, they continue to devour the lies he sells on a silver platter. When it comes to facts, Trump supporters aren’t head over heels in love with them. After all, Trump’s rise came as a result of playing to uninformed and angry people’s primal and worst sensibilities. They’re right and the entire world is wrong, because that’s what their cult leader told them, and who needs Google anyway?

-----

2. The economy is improving because of Trump.

If there’s anything Trump does better than filing for Chapter 11, it’s taking credit for things other people have done. Part-time First Lady Melania Trump stole a speech from Michelle Obama, so it only seems fitting that the Donald do it as well. Now, even though he hasn’t signed a single piece of economic legislation and all economic data is just a continuation of President Obama’s efforts, Trump seems to have no issue taking credit for all of the positive economic news. And despite the fact that Trump had been in office for a whopping two weeks, Fox News gave Trump full credit for a positive jobs report in January.

----

5. Trump should have the power to overturn judicial rulings.

Utterly clueless when it comes to the U.S. Constitution (except for the Second Amendment), 51 percent of Trump supporters think the Executive Branch should have the power to overrule the Judicial Branch. This came after Trump was overruled in his efforts to impose a Muslim travel ban.

We can laugh about some of these, but the fact that so many Trump supporters remain willfully ignorant should really concern us. You can't reason with people who won't or can't accept proven facts.

New book by Trump advisers alleges that the president has 'embedded enemies'

By Philip Rucker November 24 at 7:00 PM
Two of the president’s longest-serving advisers allege in a new book that scores of officials inside the White House, Congress, the Justice Department and intelligence agencies are “embedded enemies of President Trump” working to stymie his agenda and delegitimize his presidency.

The authors, Corey R. Lewandowski and David N. Bossie, are both Republican operatives who do not work in the administration but are close to Trump and fashion themselves as his outside protectors. They portray the president as victim to disloyalty on his staff and “swamp creatures” intent on extinguishing his political movement.

Their book, “Trump’s Enemies: How the Deep State Is Undermining the Presidency,” which is being released Tuesday and was obtained in advance by The Washington Post, paints a dark and at times conspiratorial portrait of Trump’s Washington. The authors identify by name a number of Trump appointees who they claim have formed a “resistance” inside the government during the first two years of Trump’s presidency.

Lewandowski and Bossie write that these officials “attack the administration with a thousand cuts. They do this in complete disregard to the millions of Americans who voted for Donald Trump. They do it only for their own ends. There are far too many people in the deep reaches of the federal government who harbor as deep a hatred of Trump as does anyone from the Clinton/Obama cabal. The thing is, they get away with it when no one is looking.”

Bette Midler calls Melania Trump 'FLOTITS' and Twitter won't stand for it:

'Women deserve better than this'

Bette Midler is known to speak freely when it comes to talking politics on Twitter. She has carved out a place for herself on the president’s go-to social media platform as a fierce political heckler, and her latest tweet targeting Melania Trump might be her harshest dig yet.

The actress and singer posted a photo on Wednesday of the now first lady from an infamous British GQ shoot. In this particular image from 2000, Melania Trump is posing over the pilot seats in the cockpit of her husband’s private jet, wearing a futuristic outfit consisting of a barely there transparent chain-link dress and metal headpiece.

Midler’s condescending caption included the hashtag #FLOTITS, commenting on Trump’s mostly exposed breasts, quipping “the dry cleaning bill for upholstery on Air Force One must be insane.”

Commenters are not happy with Midler’s joke, calling her “crass,” “jealous” and “desperate.”
