This is one of the most important articles I've read, and that's saying a lot for what has happened in the last year.
Inside Russias Social Media War on America
On March 2, a disturbing report hit the desks of U.S. counterintelligence officials in Washington. For months, American spy hunters had scrambled to uncover details of Russias influence operation against the 2016 presidential election. In offices in both D.C. and suburban Virginia, they had created massive wall charts to track the different players in Russias multipronged scheme. But the report in early March was something new.
It described how Russia had already moved on from the rudimentary email hacks against politicians it had used in 2016. Now the Russians were running a more sophisticated hack on Twitter. The report said the Russians had sent expertly tailored messages carrying malware to more than 10,000 Twitter users in the Defense Department. Depending on the interests of the targets, the messages offered links to stories on recent sporting events or the Oscars, which had taken place the previous weekend. When clicked, the links took users to a Russian-controlled server that downloaded a program allowing Moscows hackers to take control of the victims phone or computerand Twitter account.
As they scrambled to contain the damage from the hack and regain control of any compromised devices, the spy hunters realized they faced a new kind of threat. In 2016, Russia had used thousands of covert human agents and robot computer programs to spread disinformation referencing the stolen campaign emails of Hillary Clinton, amplifying their effect. Now counterintelligence officials wondered: What chaos could Moscow unleash with thousands of Twitter handles that spoke in real time with the authority of the armed forces of the United States? At any given moment, perhaps during a natural disaster or a terrorist attack, Pentagon Twitter accounts might send out false information. As each tweet corroborated another, and covert Russian agents amplified the messages even further afield, the result could be panic and confusion.
For many Americans, Russian hacking remains a story about the 2016 election. But there is another story taking shape. Marrying a hundred years of expertise in influence operations to the new world of social media, Russia may finally have gained the ability it long sought but never fully achieved in the Cold War: to alter the course of events in the U.S. by manipulating public opinion. The vast openness and anonymity of social media has cleared a dangerous new route for antidemocratic forces. Using these technologies, it is possible to undermine democratic government, and its becoming easier every day, says Rand Waltzman of the Rand Corp., who ran a major Pentagon research program to understand the propaganda threats posed by social media technology.

Details in major US investigation into Russian money laundering wont be exposed following surprise
Preet Bharara had this case before he was fired by The Donald.
Remind me again who has connections to Russians and money laundering.
New York (CNN)A major US investigation into Russian money laundering has come to an abrupt end.
The case aimed to expose how Russian mobsters allegedly stole $230 million and hid some of the cash in New York City real estate. Also sure to come up was the suspicious death of the Russian lawyer who exposed the alleged fraud, though US prosecutors weren't alleging that the defendants were behind it.
The trial was set to start on Monday, but late Friday night, federal prosecutors in New York announced they settled the case with Prevezon, the company accused of buying up "high-end commercial space and luxury apartments" with laundered money.
The abrupt conclusion has some involved in the trial wondering why this Russian investigation had been cut short.

NEW from WSJ: Former Trump Adviser Manafort's Bank Records Sought in Russia Probe (RICO alert)
Federal investigators looking into Russian election interference requested information; New York investigators also examining his real-estate transactions

The Justice Department last month requested banking records of Paul Manafort as part of a widening of probes related to President Donald Trumps former campaign associates and whether they colluded with Russia in interfering with the 2016 election, according to people familiar with the matter.
In mid-April, federal investigators requested Mr. Manaforts banking records from Citizens Financial Group Inc., the people said.
It isnt clear whether Citizens is the only bank that received such a request or whether it came in the form of a subpoena. Federal law generally requires that a bank receive a subpoena to turn over customer records, lawyers not connected to the investigation said.
...snip
Mr. Schneidermans office will likely focus on whether any transactions were used for money-laundering and Mr. Vances office is likely to focus on whether there are any indications of fraud, people familiar with the matter said. Messrs. Schneiderman and Vance are both Democrats.

Another F.B.I. insider points out that while the media has focused on the investigation of possible collusion between Russia and Trumps campaign, there are actually multiple inquiries in progress. Theres also a cyber investigation, about the hacking and whether crimes were committed, he says. And then theres the business side: Was there money laundering going on? Money from these Russian plutocrats thats been washed through Trumps real estate and businesses? Thats gotten overlooked, but Preet Bharara and the Southern District were supposedly looking into that. They were until April anyway, when Trump and Sessions canned Bharara along with 45 other U.S. attorneys.
