Former Senior FBI Official Is Leading BuzzFeeds Effort to Verify Trump Dossier

Source: Foreign Policy

Anthony Ferrante coordinated the U.S. government’s response to Russian election interference. Now he’s helping a news site defend itself from a Russian billionaire’s lawsuit.

For the last six months, a team led by a former top FBI and White House cybersecurity official has been traveling the globe on a secret mission to verify parts of the Trump dossier, according to four sources familiar with different aspects of the ongoing probe.

Their client: BuzzFeed, the news organization that first published the dossier on U.S. President Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Russia, which is now being sued over its explosive allegations.

The investigation, being conducted by FTI Consulting, is running in parallel to special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in Kremlin-directed efforts to interfere with the 2016 presidential election. With the special counsel probe under wraps, the BuzzFeed court case could represent the first public airing of an investigation into the veracity of some of the dossier’s claims.

FTI is a Washington-based business advisory firm that specializes in areas ranging from corporate litigation to forensic accounting, and it is a frequent post-government landing pad for FBI officials.

Deep dive into the Fourth Estate, the New York Times, and her favorite reporter, Maggie Haberman

This is a long article about the Fourth Estate, the New York Times, and her favorite reporter, Maggie Haberman, who has access to Trump. Warning: It's a deep dive & long read, but I know DUers read.

... snip

Despite all the articles published – and the incredible shooting star of journalistic fame being lavished on their reporter, The New York Times has failed to disclose to the public that she has family FINANCIAL ties to both Russia and the Trump-Kushner clan.

This reporter is Maggie Haberman.

We’ll break down Haberman’s PR spinning, apologist work in a minute. First, let’s give you some hard information that The NYTimes apparently doesn’t want you to know.

We begin with Maggie’s mom...

Sean Hannity conspires w/ Julian Assange for dirt on Dems/Mark Warner & story is on Fox "News"

Long story short, Sean Hannity conspired with Julian Assange to illegally obtain dirt on Warner/Dem senators. How do we know this? When Hannity's account was down a fake Hannity account messaged Assange who replied that he had dirt on Warner. Isn't it odd how this dirt ended on on Fox "News"?

Democratic Sen. Mark Warner texted with Russian oligarch lobbyist in effort to contact dossier author Christopher Steele

EXCLUSIVE – Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee who has been leading a congressional investigation into President Trump's alleged ties to Russia, had extensive contact last year with a lobbyist for a Russian oligarch who was offering Warner access to former British spy and dossier author Christopher Steele, according to text messages obtained exclusively by Fox News.

"We have so much to discuss u need to be careful but we can help our country," Warner texted the lobbyist, Adam Waldman, on March 22, 2017.

"I'm in," Waldman, whose firm has ties to Hillary Clinton, texted back to Warner.

Steele famously put together the anti-Trump dossier of unverified information that was used by FBI and Justice Department officials in October 2016 to get a warrant to conduct surveillance of former Trump adviser Carter Page. Despite the efforts, Steele has not agreed to an interview with the committee.

This is the Fox spin... I feel like I need to justify posting something from Fox. I'm posting because we need to know their spin and because these texts ARE news.

(Rep) Rooney: Entire Republican Staff of House Intelligence Committee Is Under Investigation

Rooney: Entire Republican Staff of House Intelligence Committee Is Under Investigation

Rep. Tom Rooney says the atmosphere on the House Intelligence Committee is “absolute poison”:

Rooney said one reason for the tension is an erosion of trust, exacerbated by an ongoing ethics investigation into the “entire Republican staff,” including “the woman up front that answers the phone” for alleged leaks. He later added that the matter was being handled by the Office of Congressional Ethics.

Leaks, you say? From Republican staffers? I am shocked.

Twitter failed to remove hundreds of Russian propaganda videos aimed at Americans

Twitter failed to remove hundreds of Russian propaganda videos aimed at Americans

Twitter left hundreds of Russian propaganda videos, with millions of views, on its video platform Vine for months after it should have known they were posted by a Kremlin-linked troll group.

The discovery raises new questions about the nature of the company's effort to find and remove content produced by Russians trying to meddle in American politics, and how comprehensive it has been.

The accounts and videos were removed only after CNN brought them to Twitter's attention on Wednesday. Twitter did not comment as to why it removed the accounts or why they had been allowed to remain live for so long.

Sen. Mark Warner, the leading Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, told CNN he was concerned by the findings and Twitter's response.

GOP aide doesn't think "Trump has ever faced an adversary quite like Schiff. & its freaking him out"

New: My interview this morning with @RepAdamSchiff, the Congressman who infuriates the president. A GOP aide told me he doesn’t think Trump “has ever faced an adversary quite like Schiff. And it’s freaking him out.”

The Congressman Who Infuriates the President

The House Intelligence Committee’s top Democrat Adam Schiff talks about the Nunes memo, the minority response, and Trump’s insults.

... snip

In an interview on Tuesday, Schiff told me that Trump’s early-morning tweet on Monday, in which he called Schiff a “liar” and a “leaker,” was predictable given Donald Trump Jr.’s contentious interview with the committee last year, and the current controversy over a declassified Republican House memo accusing the FBI of bias in its investigation of the Trump campaign, and the as-yet-unreleased Democratic rebuttal.

“This effort to tar me as a leaker began with the president’s son, after he refused to answer questions about his conversations with his father that led to the creation of that false statement about the Trump Tower meeting,” Schiff said, referring to a misleading statement Trump drafted on his son’s behalf last July. The statement concerned a meeting Trump Jr., Paul Manafort, and Jared Kushner had attended with Russian lobbyists one year earlier, which Trump Jr. set up believing he would be obtaining incriminating information on his father’s then-presidential rival Hillary Clinton.

... snip

A GOP aide who requested anonymity to speak freely about the investigation said he doesn’t think Trump “has ever faced an adversary quite like Schiff, and it’s freaking him out.”

“First off, he’s a skilled prosecutor with an acid tongue, and a command of all the facts including the most deeply held classified information,” the aide told me. “Second, he’s not in leadership and therefore doesn’t have to consider being at the negotiating table like [Chuck] Schumer or [Nancy] Pelosi do. Third, he’s got a squeaky clean record (wouldn’t have ascended to that position if he didn’t) and comes from a district where when Trump lashes out at him, it only makes him more powerful and popular.”
