Oh My! Brazil's Former Speaker Stripped of Seat Over Swiss Accounts

Two weeks after the removal of Dilma Rousseff as Brazil's president, the lower house of Congress on Monday expelled the lawmaker who engineered her impeachment for lying about secret bank accounts in Switzerland.

The once powerful former speaker Eduardo Cunha, who has been charged with corruption by the Supreme Court, was banned from politics for eight years and faces arrest now he has lost his congressional prerogatives.

The chamber voted overwhelmingly 450-10 to strip him of his seat.

"This shows that Brazil will no longer tolerate a politician who turned Congress into a business counter for bribes and favors," said lawmaker Rubens Bueno of the Popular Socialist Party. Bueno said Cunha took kickbacks from companies and instructed them to donate to the campaigns of his allies.

Cunha's downfall has many politicians worried because he has threatened to bring down others by revealing cases of corruption that could endanger members of the government of Brazil's new President Michel Temer and derail his fiscal reform agenda.

Nine dead in South Memphis house fire; deadliest since 1920s

http://www.tennessean.com/story/news/2016/09/12/three-children-among-seven-dead-house-fire/90254068/
<snip>
Three adults and six children perished in a South Memphis house fire early Monday morning in what officials called the city’s deadliest fire in nearly a century.

One other child pulled from the home in the 1100 block of Severson was clinging to life late Monday at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.

“I don’t know what to say. I don’t know what to feel,” said Ernest Jett Jr., the father of all seven of the children. “They was the best, man. They was the best. They was drop-dead gorgeous. Smart. I mean, the most lovingest kids.”

Family members identified the adult victims as Carol Collier, 56; LaKisha Ward, 27; and Eloise Futrell, 61. They identified the children as Angel Mitchell, 17; Ernest Jett III, 9; Diamond Jett, 8, Alonzo Ward, 7; Kierra Jett, 5; and Precious Rose Jett, 2 or 3. Cameron Hollingsworth, who is 7 or 8, is the child at Le Bonheur.

ANyone else notice that media are now playing the Deplorables clip from the beginning

This is what she fucking said

"To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables," Clinton said. "Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it."

And to be grossly specific, it's way more than half of them

Ship found in Arctic 168 years after doomed Northwest Passage attempt

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/sep/12/hms-terror-wreck-found-arctic-nearly-170-years-northwest-passage-attempt
<snip>
The long-lost ship of British polar explorer Sir John Franklin, HMS Terror, has been found in pristine condition at the bottom of an Arctic bay, researchers have said, in a discovery that challenges the accepted history behind one of polar exploration’s deepest mysteries.

HMS Terror and Franklin’s flagship, HMS Erebus, were abandoned in heavy sea ice far to the north of the eventual wreck site in 1848, during the Royal Navy explorer’s doomed attempt to complete the Northwest Passage.

All 129 men on the Franklin expedition died, in the worst disaster to hit Britain’s Royal Navy in its long history of polar exploration. Search parties continued to look for the ships for 11 years after they disappeared, but found no trace, and the fate of the missing men remained an enigma that tantalised generations of historians, archaeologists and adventurers.

Now that mystery seems to have been solved by a combination of intrepid exploration – and an improbable tip from an Inuk crew member.

Super Typhoon Meranti heading for Taiwan

https://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=3426
Earth’s strongest tropical cyclone of 2016 thus far is heading for a potentially destructive encounter with Taiwan. A mere 50-mph tropical storm just two days ago, Super Typhoon Meranti was packing top sustained winds of 155 knots (180 mph) at 12Z (8:00 am EDT) Monday, using the 1-minute peak wind standard employed by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and the National Hurricane Center. (Outside of the U.S., most weather agencies employ a 10-minute wind average; by this standard, Meranti’s peak winds were 115 knots, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.) Meranti has vaulted to Category 5 strength by taking advantage of nearly ideal conditions, including very warm sea-surface temperatures around 30°C (86°F), very low wind shear (below 10 knots), and a fairly moist mid-level atmosphere (60-70% relative humidity).

Another wrinkle now taking shape in the Northwest Pacific
Another factor in Meranti’s track--and a threat in its own right--is Tropical Storm 18, which is gradually strengthening about 300 miles west of Guam. TS 18W could be a Category 3 or 4 typhoon as it approaches Japan’s southern islands on a gradually recurving track. By Wednesday, it’s possible that TS 18W will be close enough to Meranti to trigger the Fuijiwhara effect--the process by which two tropical cyclones begin to rotate cyclonically around a point in between. Should this be the case, it would enhance 18W’s poleward motion--perhaps sending it toward Japan’s populous island of Honshu as a typhoon--while also acting to slow any recurvature of Meranti and potentially increasing its rain- and flood-making potential in China.

Don the Con and 9/11: the lies, exaggerations and eye-popping claims

Immediately after the attacks, the lifelong New Yorker spoke with a local news anchor who asked whether, given his property in the financial district, he had learned anything about the devastation. Trump’s mind turned to his buildings.

“It was an amazing phone call,” Trump replied. “I mean 40 Wall Street actually was the second-tallest building in downtown Manhattan. And it was actually before the World Trade Center was the tallest. And then when they built the World Trade Center it became known as the second tallest. And now it’s the tallest.”

How much money Trump has given to recovery efforts or charities related to the 9/11 attacks remains an open question, though not without diligent investigation by the Washington Post, which found, for example, no record that Trump had ever given his own money to the 9/11 Museum. Just before the Republican primary, his foundation, which since 2008 has exclusively spent other people’s money, gave $100,000.

A spokeswoman for the Trump campaign told the Daily Mail last year that Trump had given “a total of $102m” to “hundreds of charitable foundations over a relatively short period of time, many of which helped people affected by 9/11”. Despite repeated requests, the campaign has declined to provide evidence of these gifts, and refused to release tax returns that would show donations.
