At least twelve kids may have been killed in Tennessee school bus crash

Authorities say there are multiple fatalities in an elementary school bus crash, CBS Chattanooga affiliate WDEF reported.

Sources told WDEF that as many as 12 passengers may have been killed on Monday. Authorities say there are multiple fatalities but have not said a number. The bus was carrying students from kindergarten through grade 6.

Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher said 35 students were on board on the bus when it crashed, according to WDEF. The Chattanooga Fire Department’s Public Information Director, Bruce Garner, said in a tweet that 23 patients were taken to hospitals in ambulances.

Colonel Tracy Trott of the Tennessee Highway Patrol tweeted that children were both killed and injured:

Say no to Jeff Sessions, the lying racist

Donald Trump’s nominee for US attorney general was once accused of calling a black official in Alabama a “nigger”, and then gave a false explanation to the US Senate when testifying about the allegation.

Senator Jeff Sessions was said to have used the racist term in November 1981, when talking about the first black man to be elected as a county commissioner in Mobile, where Sessions was a Republican party official and a federal prosecutor.

Asked about the alleged remark five years later, during Senate hearings on his ill-fated nomination by President Ronald Reagan for a federal judgeship, Sessions denied saying it and claimed the alleged timing did not stand up to scrutiny.

“My point is there was not a black county commissioner at that time,” Sessions said, in response to questions from Joe Biden, then a senator for Delaware. “The black was only elected later.”

But this was not true. Public records show Douglas Wicks had become the first black person elected to one of Mobile’s three county commission seats in September 1980 – more than a year before Sessions allegedly referred to him using the racist term.

Draft-dodging runs in their veins -Historian finds German decree banishing Trump's grandfather

A historian has discovered a royal decree issued to Donald Trump’s grandfather ordering him to leave Germany and never come back.

Friedrich Trump, a German, was issued with the document in February 1905, and ordered to leave the kingdom of Bavaria within eight weeks as punishment for having failed to do mandatory military service and failing to give authorities notice of his departure to the US when he first emigrated in 1885.

Roland Paul, a historian from Rhineland-Palatinate who found the document in local archives, told the tabloid Bild: “Friedrich Trump emigrated from Germany to the USA in 1885. However, he failed to de-register from his homeland and had not carried out his military service, which is why the authorities rejected his attempt at repatriation.”

The decree orders the “American citizen and pensioner Friedrich Trump” to leave the area “at the very latest on 1 May ... or else expect to be deported”. Bild called the archive find an “unspectacular piece of paper”, that had nevertheless “changed world history”.

Trump was born in Kallstadt, now in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, in 1869. He emigrated to the US aged 16 initially to escape poverty, attracted by the gold rush.

120 dead so far in horrific train crashin Northern India

At least 120 people are said to have have been killed and at least 200 more injured after a train derailed near the city of Kanpur in northern India in the country’s worst train crash since 2010.

Hundreds of people were trapped after 14 carriages of the express train, travelling from Indore to Patna, crumpled into one another as they came off the tracks on Sunday. The train derailed near the village of Purwa, about 40 miles (65km) from Kanpur.

The crash occurred at about 3am when the majority of passengers were asleep. Most of the victims were in two carriages near the engine that overturned.

“The death toll has reached 120. At least 200 others are injured,” Zaki Ahmad, the police inspector general of Kanpur zone, told the Agence France-Presse news agency.

Ruby Gupta, who was travelling to the city of Azamgarh for her wedding, searched the wreckage for her father.

“I cannot find my father and I have been looking everywhere for him,” she told an NDTV reporter. “Some people told me to look in hospitals and in morgues, but I am clueless as to what to do.”

Sarkozy humiliated in French Primary

The former French prime minister François Fillon, a socially conservative, free-market reformer who admires Margaret Thatcher and voted against same-sex marriage, has topped the first round of the primary race to choose the right’s candidate for the presidential race next spring.

With three quarters of votes counted, Fillon, who served as prime minister under president Nicolas Sarkozy from 2007 to 2012, had topped the poll by a large margin. He now faces a second-round run off against Alain Juppé, the more moderate mayor of Bordeaux who was prime minister under Jacques Chirac.

But the divisive former president Sarkozy suffered a humiliating defeat, knocked out of the race after he ran an extremely hard-right campaign on French national identity, targeting Muslims and minorities. His poor score after a campaign in which he suggested banning Muslim headscarves from universities and was forced to protest his innocence faced with several legal investigations into corrupt campaign financing, showed he had become just as much a hate-figure on the right as on the left.
