Louisiana attorney general to ask Sessions to break up Google, Facebook, Twitter

Source: Mercury News

Political momentum for a crackdown on Silicon Valley’s social media giants got a boost this week when a state attorney general said he would tell U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions next week that Google, Facebook and Twitter should be broken up.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry wants the federal government to do to the social media firms what it did to Standard Oil in 1911, according to a Louisiana newspaper report Tuesday.

The government smashed up Standard using antitrust laws, forcing it to break into 34 business pieces. Landry is accusing the tech behemoths of suppressing conservative views and stifling competition, on top of infringing on antitrust laws, The Advocate reported.

“This can’t be fixed legislatively,” Landry told the paper. “We need to go to court with an antitrust suit.”

Christine Blasey Ford's colleagues describe her as honest and rigorous

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-blasey-ford-kavanaugh-accuser-20180919-story.html

Christine Blasey Ford, the Northern California psychology professor who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault when they were both teenagers, is described by colleagues as a rigorous statistician who doesn’t fudge the data or stray from the facts.

One psychiatrist who has collaborated with her on four academic papers told The Times that Ford is “a woman of great integrity”; another who has known her for more than 10 years described her as calm, measured and scrupulously honest.

Stanford psychiatry professor David Spiegel has known Ford for 14 years and co-wrote academic papers with her on subjects including people who suffered trauma from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the effects of hypnosis on depression.

Spiegel also studies survivors of sexual abuse and said he had been following news about an anonymous claim of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh. He was shocked when the Washington Post identified Ford on Sunday as the accuser.

“I know her to be an honorable, honest, straightforward, decent person. I can’t conceive of her doing this for any other reason than she is honestly reporting what she’s experienced,” Spiegel said of Ford, a Palo Alto University professor who teaches in a consortium at Stanford.

Eric Holder: Trump releasing docs on Russia probe is 'dangerous abuse of power'

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/407214-eric-holder-trump-releasing-docs-on-russia-probe-is-dangerous-abuse

Former Attorney General Eric Holder called President Trump's decision to declassify a range of documents related to the Russia investigation is a "dangerous abuse of power."

"This is an especially dangerous abuse of power by this President," Holder tweeted Tuesday. "He places his self interest above the national security interests of the country."

https://twitter.com/EricHolder/status/1042020158489944064

The criticism from Holder, who served as attorney general during the Obama administration, comes just a day after Trump ordered the declassification of a set of sensitive documents tied to the Russia probe.

The order makes public classified parts of a surveillance application that gave the FBI the ability to monitor former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. In addition, text messages tied to the investigation into Russia's election interference from top federal officials such as former FBI Director James Comey will become public.

Hill.TV interview exclusive: Trump eviscerates Sessions: 'I don't have an attorney general'

https://thehill.com/hilltv/rising/407358-hilltv-interview-exclusive-trump-eviscerates-sessions-i-have-no-attorney

President Trump in an Oval Office interview with Hill.TV launched one of his most ferocious broadsides to date against Jeff Sessions, suggesting the attorney general was essentially AWOL and performing badly on a variety of issues.

“I don’t have an Attorney General. It’s very sad,” Trump told Hill.TV in an extensive and free-wheeling interview Tuesday from the Oval Office.

The president has long excoriated Sessions for his March2017 decision to recuse himself from the Russia collusion investigation. But on Tuesday he suggested he is frustrated by Sessions' performance on far more than that.

“I’m not happy at the border, I’m not happy with numerous things, not just this,” he said.

Asshole. He doesn't have the guts to fire him for actually doing the right thing and recusing himself from the Russia probe.

Blasey Ford facing online threats, 'doxing,' moves out of home

https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/09/18/blasey-ford-facing-online-threats-doxing-moves-out-of-home/

At 10:28 Tuesday morning, a Twitter account with a white nationalist talking point for its handle posted Christine Blasey Ford’s personal address.

The account called for “peaceful protests” at Ford’s home in Northern California over her accusation that Judge Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a party in the early 1980s when they were teenagers. The allegation was a “hoax” orchestrated by the “deranged left,” the account tweeted.

Ford and her family have moved out of their home as a security precaution, and she and her husband are staying apart from their two children. “She’s spending her time trying to figure out the logistics of her life as it is now and how to keep herself and her family safe,” the person said.

Twitter spokesman Ian Plunkett declined to say whether the site suspended any accounts or deleted any tweets for revealing personal information about Ford. “If we receive reports of violations, we will take action where appropriate,” he said.

Noah’s Ark except it’s a school bus: Truck driver rescues 64 dogs and cats from floods of Hurricane Florence

There is nothing like a meal at the Waffle House after driving more than 60 animals from the South Carolina coast to southern Alabama inside a school bus. Tony Alsup can attest.

Alsup, a 51-year-old trucker from Greenback, Tenn., was parked at a Waffle House outside Fayetteville, N.C., on Sunday night for a quick pit stop and a plate of waffles and grits. He had been on the road since Monday, when he hopped in his bus and headed toward the coast, committed to rescuing as many animals as possible ahead of Hurricane Florence.

Inside the bus, the seats have been ripped out to make room for its passengers. On the bus’s side are the words “EMERGENCY ANIMAL RESCUE SHELTER.” But it could have said “Noah’s Ark.

In the last week, Alsup and his bus have rescued 53 dogs and 11 cats from South Carolina shelters that were in Florence’s treacherous path, as first reported by the Greenville News.

The Latest: DOJ: It's not the FBI's job to judge allegations

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh (all times local): 8:15 PM

The Justice Department says the sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh “does not involve any potential federal crime” for the FBI to investigate.

The department said in a statement Monday night that the FBI’s role during background investigations is to evaluate whether the nominee could pose a national security risk and then provide that information “for the use of the decision makers.”

The department says it’s not the job of the FBI to judge the significance or the credibility of an accusation.
