The Server Needs To Die To Save The Internet
http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/23/maidsafe/No one said this was a small problem with an easy fix. MaidSafe has actually been working on its new network since 2006, finally coming out of stealth earlier this year to begin detailing its grand plan. Its now rolling out the first of three test networks, to test the underlying network without any apps on it as yet, ahead of a full beta launch in Q4. The initial test network comprises 180 nodes, located in Singapore, San Francisco, Amsterdam and New York.
So what exactly is this startup building? MaidSafes Nick Lambert summarizes the product as a fully cross-platform, fully decentralized autonomous data and communications network. What that means in practice is a network that does away with an intermediary layer of servers and datacenters replacing that with peer-to-peer infrastructure. (No surprise then that MaidSafe counts Michael Jackson, the former COO of P2P pioneer Skype, as an advisor.)
Basically, the users of the network are also acting as the network infrastructure by donating a portion of their spare hard drive capacity with built in incentives for them to do so in the form of a network specific cryptocurrency (called SafeCoin).
There are no other networks that combine being autonomous and serverless
So, in a similar way to Bitcoin mining being incentivized by the creation and distribution of new Bitcoins, users of the MaidSafe network will be compensated for the computing resource they contribute by earning SafeCoin. (Currently one SafeCoin is worth around 2 US cents but there was also a time when Bitcoin was worth as little and MaidSafe obviously expects the value of SafeCoin to scale up as usage of the network scales.) It calls this resource donation process farming.

question about grad school costs
My son might pursue a Ph.D. in music one day and be a music professor. Maybe not. Is it reasonable to assume student loans up to $100K for that ? I'm only asking about grad school costs and NOT including undergrad. He would probably go to a state school here in Florida, unless he moves. Thanks for your time.

Sarah Palin has announced the formation of her own Internet television news channel.
In a Facebook post late Sunday evening, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee announced the Sarah Palin Channel, an interactive, online network designed as an alternative to mainstream news media.
This is a news channel that really is a lot more than news, Palin said in a video introducing the network. This is a community where were going to be able to share ideas and discuss the issues of the day. And were going to find solutions.
The network will cost $9.95 per month or $99.95 annually for subscribers.
Tundra grifter finds another way to cash in. Ugh.

The government has opened the bidding process for new licences to extract shale gas, using the controversial fracking process.
About half the UK is open to exploration, but tightened rules cover areas of outstanding beauty.
Companies granted a licence to begin test drilling will also need planning permission and environmental permits.
The coalition sees shale gas as a major potential energy source. Critics of fracking warn of environmental dangers.
UK DU'ers, please chime in, thanks.

Hot where you are ? Poor India....
The heat in northern India was so bad (temperatures up to 47.8°C (118.0°F) that power stations shut down, unable to keep up with demand for air conditioning and fans. Riots broke out and several electric substations were burned down by mobs.

My power has blacked out 3 times now in the last 3 months, which is the most I can ever recall in my ancient 56 years. My cable internet even went down completely last night, and yes, it was the ISP's fault because I called them. It came back on about 4 hours later.
I know, I know, first world problem, but it is a tad annoying. Have a lovely summer day, wherever you may be.

Power blackouts 3 times in 3 months in my area, how's your service ?
Living in the MOST lightning-prone area of the entire United States, I am accustomed to my power going out occasionally. It's been, in my experience, usually once a year, twice at the very most.My power has blacked out 3 times now in the last 3 months, which is the most I can ever recall in my ancient 56 years. An incident between Tim McGraw and a woman in the crowd at a recent concert has had media and fans talking, but an extended video clip sheds new light on what happened.
During a July 13 appearance in Atlanta, Georgia, McGraw came out to play an encore, including a performance of his hit song Truck Yeah. In the clip, the 47-year-old, who is sporting a pair of tight jeans, is seen walking down a thin part of the stage, shaking hands with several of his enthusiastic fans.
About halfway through the video, an overeager female fan dancing close to the stage appears, reaching her hand up. She slaps the stars behind several times before grabbing at his pants, ripping them and nearly knocking McGraw off the stage. The clip shows that the singer is visibly annoyed.
McGraw goes back to swat her hand away, seemingly exchanging a few choice words with the fan before continuing the song. A security guard almost immediately grabs the woman and escorts her away from the stage while she argues with him. McGraw stands on the stage watching as she is taken away, looking less than thrilled with what has happened.

Floridians will vote Nov. 4 on whether to legalize medical marijuana. What could it mean for patients, the health care industry and the burgeoning pot industry if the required 60 percent of voters say yes to pot? Here are some key facts to keep in mind:
1) Nobody will be buying or selling legal medical pot in Florida until late 2015 or early 2016
Amendment 2 gives the Florida Department of Health until early July to establish regulations to make the system work. The department then has until early October to license the first Medical Treatment Centers. Until then, no one can start growing, much less selling. The first harvest might not come in until late 2015 or beyond. Regulations may forbid Treatment Centers from importing pot from other states or countries for resale. And even if Florida does allow that, postal regulations. airline rules and state laws probably would make importation impractical. Imagine a truck full of pot driving from Colorado to Florida. If it gets stopped in Arkansas, authorities will not care that the pot is legal in both Colorado and Florida. Buyers probably will have to await the first harvest.
2) The regulations will fill in many missing details.
