WARSAW: During World War II, Wojciech Narebski and his fellow Polish servicemen had to lift crate after heavy metal crate of artillery. Fortunately for them, one of the soldiers had superhuman strength: Corporal Wojtek, a Syrian brown bear.
“When he saw that we were struggling, he’d want to help… He’d come over, grab a crate and carry it to the truck,” Narebski, now 93, told AFP of his days with Wojtek in the 22nd Artillery Supply Company.
This can be heavy work, even for a bear. When Wojtek got tired, he would simply stack one crate on top of the other, “which also helped us, because we didn’t have to lift the crate off the ground,” recounted the veteran who spent two and a half years with the friendly giant he considered a brother.
“Of course he got a reward. Honey, marmalade. That was his favourite.”

Fedex: your experiences and my recent story
Several weeks ago, I asked the kind people of the Lounge for suggestions on how to sell cemetery plots faster. You answered and I thank you.
As of yesterday, the plots are now sold! It was a much more difficult and lengthy process than I had anticipated, but at least my brother and I got them sold finally.
Now, the Fedex issue: long story short, to expedite the entire sales process, I had paperwork sent to Tallahassee for my brother to sign, and then he was to Fedex the completed paperwork to the funeral home.
The paperwork got to Tallahassee just fine, and my brother did his part. I gave him a pre-paid Fedex envelope to use, with a sticker with the funeral home address on it. He dropped it into a Fedex box in downtown Tallahassee, and, naive me, I thought it would go back to the funeral home quickly with no issues. Wrong. It never made it there.
In my entire life, I've only lost one piece of mail with the Postal Service. Now, Fedex has lost a piece of mail. Are they as reliable as the USPS or have I just been lucky ? Just curious, thanks.
'Strong Explosion' Tears Through Paris Bakery, Injuring Several People

PARIS — An large explosion tore through a bakery in central Paris on Saturday morning, leaving smoke and flames and scattered debris in its wake and injuring several people, the authorities said.
The authorities said the blast was believed to have been tied to a gas leak.
The Paris police prefecture said on Twitter that a fire initially started in a shop on Rue de Trévise that was then hit by a “strong explosion.” About 200 firefighters battled the blaze, and photos on social media showed firefighters helping people down a ladder after the blast.
About 100 police officers were sent to the scene.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis excludes LGBTQ protections from anti-discrimination order

Ron DeSantis signed an anti-discrimination order for state employees that excluded protections for LGBTQ people.
The Republican governor signed the "Reaffirming Commitment to Diversity in Government" order, which pledges that his administration will prohibit discrimination in employment based on "age, sex, race, color, religion, national origin, marital status or disability" for government employees and contractors. The order, though, does not include "sexual orientation" or "gender identity" among the listed protections.
"Equality Florida is deeply disappointed to see that LGBTQ employees and contractors have been left out of the Governor’s executive order," said Joe Saunders, senior political director for the state's leading LGBTQ rights group. "It’s hard to believe that Gov. DeSantis and his staff are not aware of the LGBTQ communities call for these protections following the Pulse tragedy and therefore it is hard to interpret this as anything less than a purposeful omission."
Since the 2016 massacre at the gay nightclub Pulse, LGBTQ advocates from across the state pleaded with Republican Gov. Rick Scott to sign an executive order protecting state employees against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Florida civil rights laws don't explicitly protect queer and trans communities from discrimination, meaning it's legal to deny LGBTQ people housing, service and employment.

A German politician has left the far-right Alternative for Germany to set up a new party with a logo that uses a symbol adopted as a secret sign by Austrian Nazis in the 1930s.
André Poggenburg resigned from his post as the AfD’s regional leader in eastern Saxony-Anhalt state last year after labelling Turks as “camel drivers” and immigrants with dual nationality a “homeless mob we no longer want”. He announced his resignation from the party in an email sent to the leadership earlier this week.
In the email he criticised the AfD for worrying too much about the possibility of being put under surveillance by German intelligence. Separately he told Welt newspaper that he was opposed to a “shift to the left” in the AfD, which has spent the last months ridding itself of extreme elements in an attempt to appear more moderate.

His new party Aufbruch der deutschen Patrioten (Awakening of German Patriots) will use a cornflower against the background of a German flag. The small blue flower was used as a secret symbol by the then-banned National Socialists in 1930s Austria before the Anschluss of 1938 brought the Nazis to power in the country.

What really ought to worry the president and his inner circle is what Mueller knows about the election and has yet to reveal. The Special Counsel doesn’t have to disclose to suspects how it knows certain things, and it’s apparent that Mueller and his investigators asked Manafort about his dealings with Kilimnik, which he lied about—and the ostrich jacket connoisseur is now trying to come clean before he gets a de facto life sentence in prison.
That Mueller knew about Manafort’s 2016 dealings with Kilimnik is no surprise, given that the two men communicated frequently for many years, and the Special Counsel seized all of those communications from Manafort. But how did Mueller know about their secret Madrid meeting in early 2017, despite Manafort’s denials?
The answer lies in a highly secretive intelligence program run by the National Security Agency (NSA). It’s called travel tracking and its existence, like so many NSA top-secret operations, was revealed by Edward Snowden, the disgruntled agency IT contractor who fled to Moscow in June 2013 with over a million classified documents from the NSA and other U.S. spy agencies.
Travel tracking means that the NSA and its Five Eyes Anglosphere intelligence partners know who’s going where by air, and when, anywhere. They can even crack into WiFi and mobile phones in flight, according to top secret-plus documents stolen and leaked by Snowden. Unless you’re traveling under alias documents of the kind issued by higher-end spy services, the NSA and its close friends know where you’re headed.
