(JEWISH GROUP) I Believe Some of Your Best Friends Are Jewish

THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP!! RESPECT!

I believe Valerie Plame, the former C.I.A. operative and fading liberal celebrity, when she says she missed the anti-Semitic “undercurrents” in an article she called “provocative, but thoughtful.” I believe her when she says she “zeroed in on the neocon criticism” but missed the article’s more prejudicial elements.

The article was titled “America’s Jews Are Driving America’s Wars.” It uses variants of the word “Jew” 22 times. The word “neocons” appears only twice. I believe Plame is telling the truth when she says the subtlety was lost on her.

I believed Donald Trump when he insisted last year there was nothing amiss with him tweeting the image of a six-pointed star superimposed over a pile of $100 bills alongside a picture of Hillary Clinton and the caption “Most corrupt candidate ever!” I believe him when he said it was a sheriff’s star, not a Star of David.

I did not believe white supremacist David Duke when he said there was “no way” it was a sheriff’s star. What does David Duke know about dog whistles anyway?

I believe the national council of the American Studies Association was taking an “ethical stance” when it voted unanimously in 2013 for an academic boycott of Israeli institutions. I find nothing askance in the association never previously boycotting the institutions of any other country. I believe the group’s then-president, Curtis Marez, made a valid argument that Israel was targeted because “one has to start somewhere.”

(JEWISH GROUP) Valerie Plame Can Claim Whatever She Wants, But Her Anti-Semitism Is Clear As Day

I hadn’t heard the name Valerie Plame in a while. It had been years since she was outed as a CIA operative by Bob Novak resulting in her story catching fire in the press years ago, and quite frankly I had completely put her out of my memory.

Hell of an article to Tweet out on Rosh Hashanah, but I digress.


The article’s author, Philip Giraldi, essentially argues that American Jews should not be in position to influence American foreign policy because they are somehow doing the bidding of Israel. Yes, this man is openly calling for discrimination against an entire religion.

(JEWISH GROUP) The other problem with Valerie Plames horrible anti-Semitic tweet

Happy New Year! Or not.

On the first full day of Rosh Hashanah, unmasked CIA officer Valerie Plame tweeted out an article entitled, “America’s Jews are driving America’s wars.” As if the headline weren’t bad enough, the essay appeared on a website featuring such pieces as “It’s time to re-think David Duke.” Its argument mirrored a classic anti-Semitic conspiracy theory: Jews run everything in America, and because of their irrational love for Israel they’re running us into foreign conflicts, too.

It is nigh impossible to argue that the article was anything but vile. It called for identifying Jewish Americans as such when they appear on television (much as, it said, one might affix a warning label to a bottle of rat poison). That didn’t stop Plame from trying, at first — protesting that “many neocon hawks ARE Jewish.” Finally, she progressed to the last of the all-too-predictable stages of post-Twitter meltdown grief and issued a full-throated mea culpa. She has since deleted her initial tweet.

It’s also pretty clear that Plame’s apology was insufficient. Perhaps, as she said, she simply “skimmed” the piece before posting it. But did she make the same mistake with the other anti-Semitic musings she has shared over the past few months? “I never heard this story about 9/11: The Dancing Israelis,” reads one.

More interesting than the painfully obvious, though, is how the second Plame affair played into a broader debate about anti-Semitism in the United States. Conservatives crowed over Plame’s fall from grace because her unmasking in the 2000s and her antiwar advocacy in the years since have made her a hero in the eyes of many liberals. In their eyes, the left’s favorite member of the CIA had outed herself this time — as a bigot.

And that proved a point they’ve long been harping on: When it comes to Jews, liberals are just as “racist” as their neo-Nazi brethren. It didn’t matter that the piece Plame shared was written by a right-winger. What mattered was that she shared it. And by sharing it, she fit neatly into the narrative of the intolerant left.

(JEWISH GROUP) The left has an Israel problem.Does that mean colleges have an anti-Semitism problem?

Recently JTA reported a story about an alternative students’ guide published by student activists at Tufts University that labels Israel a white supremacist state. The so-called “disorientation guide” also reduced the university’s Hillel to a “Zionist” organization that offers nothing of value to the private campus’s diversity or culture.

The authors of the guide might deny that, of course. But what else do you make of a guide to campus diversity that does not discuss Jewish social, cultural or religious life? And one that takes at face value complaints from an African-American organization that a Hillel-sponsored event about gun control was meant to “exploit” black people “for their own pro-Israel agenda”?

After all, what’s a Jewish organization doing promoting liberal causes, right?

The conflation of “Jewish” and “Zionist” (and “racist” and “colonialist,” while we’re at it) is hardly a new thing on the left, although the guide was a pretty stark example of an entire minority group on campus being erased or devalued with a few taps of a keyboard by those who purport to stand up for religious and ethnic minorities. That’s why we considered it an important story, and that’s why we published it.

(JEWISH GROUP) Vermont Teacher Fired for Demonstrating Nazi Salute to Third Graders

A Georgia Elementary & Middle School substitute teacher was fired Thursday after demonstrating the Nazi salute for a group of third grade students, according to a district official.

Franklin West Supervisory Union Superintendent Ned Kirsch wrote to parents Thursday night that the incident involved a "long-term substitute" interacting with students who were walking to the cafeteria.

"The children were standing with their arm out in front of them and the teacher was modeling the position," Kirsch wrote. "She then raised her arm slightly and said, 'And now we say, Heil Hitler.'"

"I'm at a loss on the whole thing," Kirsch told Seven Days on Friday. "People are shocked. People I've spoken to are at a loss for words." He declined to identify the teacher.

Everyone says it could never happen here

Kill the Jews,” “Heil Hitler,” SS lightning bolts, swastikas, and other epithets were found by employees spray-painted all over the outside of the Airport Diner in Wantage early Sunday morning.

The graffiti also included the acronym “WPWW,” which stands for White Power World Wide and “14/88” — well-known in white supremacist circles as a reference to the 14-word skinhead slogan, “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children,” and 88 is a representation for “Heil Hitler” because H is the eighth letter in the alphabet.

A refrigerator inside the diner was also vandalized.

Local and regional Jewish leaders reacted with surprise, in part because, as one rabbi put it, “There’s not even a shul in that area.”

(JEWISH GROUP) Root Out Insidious Hate

THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP! RESPECT!

They were both blood red. One was a little smeared; the other had cleaner lines. These were the second and third swastikas found on campus this semester, and this is the second time I have had to start an article for The Hoya by describing swastikas on campus. Hate at Georgetown is not a subject I wish to return to, but I must. These swastikas, and the selective outrage they have triggered, reveal uncomfortable truths about our community. We condemn anti-Semitism only when it is both flagrant and right-wing. Most of the time however, we ignore it. By ignoring it, we perpetuate it.

Within a week of the beginning of classes, a swastika was found scratched into the wall of a Village C West elevator. The next day, two more were daubed in red paint in an LXR Hall elevator. These are the latest incidents in a pattern of anti-Semitic graffiti at Georgetown, which last semester saw swastikas scratched into elevators and “kill Jews” written in a bathroom stall across from Makóm, the Jewish gathering space. Last spring, numerous fliers for the Georgetown Israel Alliance, a group of which I am the vice president, were defaced and torn down. More incidents go unreported, as when someone drew a swastika on my whiteboard just an hour after I hung it on my freshman dorm door last year. Of course, only a tiny fraction of students is responsible for these hate crimes, and Georgetown as a whole is an accepting and pluralistic community. So why not just ignore these graffiti as a nuisance?

I wish I could dismiss it all, but I simply cannot. I have toured Auschwitz with a childhood survivor of Josef Mengele’s experiments. I have seen mass graves in the forests of Belarus with Fr. Patrick Desbois, who has identified thousands of such grave sites across Eastern Europe. My great-grandparents survived the extermination of Hungarian Jewry — much of their family did not. “Kill Jews” is never an empty threat. A swastika at my school is someone telling me that I do not belong at Georgetown and that I perhaps do not belong among the living. One swastika whispers that to me — three shout it.

I was heartened to see dozens of non-Jewish students, in addition to senior administrators, at Friday night Shabbat services the week the swastikas were found. Both the Georgetown University College Democrats and College Republicans denounced the graffiti; the Georgetown University Student Association did too, and scheduled a speech and expression forum for Tuesday, Sept. 26. These are all positive steps, but deeper problems remain unaddressed.

(JEWISH GROUP) What Anti-Semitism in America Looks Like From Israel

TEL AVIV — The first meeting between an Israeli prime minister and a German chancellor took place in 1960 in New York. At this meeting, David Ben-Gurion of Israel explained to Konrad Adenauer of West Germany that there were three types of Jews in the world before Israel was established: the Jews who lived among Muslims, who adopted Muslim customs; the Jews of Europe, who never considered themselves a part of the society in which they lived; and the Jews of America, who live in a country of immigrants and so see themselves as Americans like all other Americans.

Ben-Gurion, who was born in modern-day Poland, understood European Jews. But he never really understood the Jews of the Arab world or the Jews of America. The truth is, even now many of us Israelis still don’t. And nowhere is this clearer than in how Israel responds to anti-Semitism in America today.

Generally, Jewish Israelis are not personally familiar with anti-Semitism. When they hear “anti-Semitism” they think about Jewish history — the Nazis’ Holocaust, the pogroms in czarist Russia — not our own experiences. At the same time, after looking at history, Jewish Israelis never fully believe that it’s possible for a non-Jewish country to be free of anti-Semitism. A 2016 poll found that 99 percent of Israelis believe that anti-Semitism is “very” or “somewhat common” around the world. Thus, for many Israelis the next disaster in the diaspora is just a matter of time.

Jewish Israelis are also not acquainted with Jewish assertiveness outside of Israel. The story they know — the Zionist narrative — is of powerless Jews in the diaspora who became politically assertive only in the Jewish state. This is, to use Ben-Gurion’s formulation, the story of European Jews.

Racist fliers target Sandpoint mayor (Idaho)

SANDPOINT – Of the caches of racist fliers that have littered Sandpoint neighborhoods since April, the city’s mayor, Shelby Rognstad, has been the primary target.

A Photoshopped depiction of Rognstad in a gas chamber – a Nazi-clad cartoon frog, Pepe, manning the switch – was the most recent on-paper assault by what he believes is a tiny faction of white supremacists.

Other fliers had broader hate-filled messages, including “Keep Idaho safe…Keep Idaho clean …Keep Idaho white,” words draped over racist caricatures of three men, Hispanic, African-American and Jewish.

But since the events in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Aug. 12, Rognstad said, there has been an uptick in distribution.

“It’s almost been on a daily basis the last couple of weeks,” said Rognstad, a white man who believes he struck the ire of the hate group because of his support for low-income housing projects and a false rumor he is Jewish.

“My hunch is that it’s just one or two people trying to get as much attention as possible,” he said. “Intially, the attitude was to ignore them. But now, since Charlottesville and these fliers now being distributed every day, it‘s time to speak up.”
