Is Rachel Maddow's "Hubris" going to be repeated?

Missed it!

Flu has taken my brain.

SERIES OF BOMBINGS IN BAGHDAD AREA KILL DOZENS

Source: AP

BAGHDAD (AP) -- Car bombs tore through shopping areas within minutes of each other in mainly Shiite neighborhoods of the Iraqi capital on Sunday, killing at least 37 people and wounding more than 100.

The attacks come amid rising sectarian discord in Iraq and appear aimed at shaking Iraqis' confidence in the Shiite-led government. The explosions struck at the start of the local work week and primarily targeted outdoor markets.

Violence in Iraq has fallen since the height of sectarian fighting in 2006 and 2007, but insurgents still frequently launch lethal attacks against security forces and civilians. It was the third time this month that attacks have claimed more than 20 lives in a single day.

It worked.....! We brought peace and prosperity to that country.

Well...no... but whatever you call it, it was certainly worth the deaths of 4408 Americans and a few hundred thousand Iraqis.

Right...?

Angry..... ?

I posted on FB that Nugent is a "chickenhawk, pants-shitting, draft-dodging, serial pedophile, game poacher who has threatened the President and other elected officials"

And a couple of people answered that I have an anger problem.

Do I?

Gosh, I hope not. How will I sleep at night with that heavy burden of guilt and anger?

WTF is wrong with people that they aren't angry about that asshole?

More than that... who isn't angry these days.

The fucking RW idiots are angry at our Commie, Socialist, Nazi president.

The far left - me, for instance - is angry about the drones, the corporate takeover of our country, the general pissing on the Bill of Rights, etc

Seems to me the only people who ain't pissed are the people too out of it to know anything that's going on. Baaaaaaaa.

Was Wayne LaPierre given a draft deferment because of mental disorder...?

It was mentioned in a couple of posts here on DU, but I can't track it down.

Did anybody research?

(Yes, my Google works fine. Not so with my brain. Flu...no, wait....FLU!)

I have about 80 cobalt blue beer bottles...

... Bud Platinum.

I didn't drink the beer. Horse urine....

I don't want to just recycle them... is there anyplace I can donate them to artists to make glass projects? Melt 'em... whatever.

I'm in the desert in SoCal, and I won't ship 'em anywhere.

Any ideas on what to do with them that doesn't involve using some lube and....?

Saw this 'toon...

I don't agree. At all.

I think the brain clot is stubborn wrongheadedness.

I don't believe they actually give a shit about Benghazi.

I think they only want to be obstructionist/contrarian and will seize any opportunity.

Maybe "brain constipation" would be closer to the truth.

This country is fucked in the head!..

Sorry for the rant, but it is a well deserved rant.

Wednesday, I was on a special insider's tour of a large zoo-like institution in the Southwest... I won't be more specific.

They do great work with endangered animals and the like. Great place.

We toured their hospital facility. As modern as any people hospital. Set up for surgery and exams on animals from mice to giraffes. All the bells and whistles.. blood-gas analyzers, x-ray, intensive care unit, recovery rooms.... The nurses station looked like the modern space-age station...... monitors, computers, etc.

As we neared home - in our very little, rural desert town, I spied the local homeless schizophrenic wandering down the road. The guy hangs around town during the days.. talking to himself... and sleeps in an abandoned shed on the outskirts of town. He eats whatever he can find/scrounge. He's cold in the winter and hot (117) in the summer. He's dressed in rags.

The cops have tried to get him to a better place, but he drifts back. He's not - in the strict legal definition - a danger to himself or others, but his chances of dying from the heat or cold or hunger are certainly good.

Why is it that this country takes better care of animals than they take care of people like him?

The Fascist in me wants some agency to clap a net over him and take him somewhere where he can get food, shelter, and medical care. If we had such a place. The do-gooder in me takes him food and blankets. Sometimes, he's so paranoid that he doesn't trust the food or clothing.

I don't begrudge the animals the best of health care.

I just want us to take care of our fellow citizens who are ill.

We have the best weapons systems in the world.... but we can't take care of our own.

Thus the "country is fucked in the head"...

Question about the mortgage settlement....

Is that it? Are all the various legal suits about the mortgage mess now settled? Are the investor suits.. not just the suits brought by borrowers... settled, too?

Is there any possibility of future criminal complaints?

I just can't believe that one settlement for a few billion bucks resolved the entire clusterfuck.

Can anybody explain to a non-business major?

The nutjobs - Hanutty this time - are reaching critical mass.....

On his Friday radio show, conservative talker and Fox News host Sean Hannity warned that the United States may fall apart if tax rates remain high.

“People that are fed up with a power hungry, radicalized, abusive federal government intruding into every aspect of our lives,” Hannity continued. “People are going to say they’re fed up, and states are going to want more liberty and more freedom. They’re not going to want to tax their citizens to death anymore. If this pattern continues and gets worse and worse and worse, I can see at some point the states saying, ‘Forget it. I don’t want to be a part of this union anymore.’”

Hannity rejected the idea that secession is necessarily a “radical concept,” arguing that the Declaration of Independence is itself a “radical document.”

“There is a tipping point in all of these debates,” he said. “Now, politically speaking, that means people are going to be thrown out of office, I hope. But if not, there are going to be people in more conservative states that have had enough. I can see a state like Utah saying, ‘Enough is enough,’ [and] a state like Texas saying, ‘Enough is enough.’ I absolutely can.”

Forget the "Bushmaster" for a moment...

and let's talk about the .223 bullet itself. It sounds like the perfect bullet for hunting.... oh... let's say 6 year old kids and firefighters!

The .223 breaks up more than other bullets. After it hits someone, the .223 round tumbles and fragments as it punches deeper into the body, multiplying the damage.

If the bullet is fired as a hunting round, with its lead tip exposed, the tip flattens and widens to as much as a half-inch as it travels before it fragments into a "lead snowstorm" pattern of many tiny bits.
If fired as a military round, with a "full metal jacket" of steel or copper covering the round, it may turn sideways and break in two after hitting someone.

For a little bullet, the 5.56 (.223) bullet produces quite dramatic wounds.   While the traditional 30-06 caliber bullet of the M1 Garand and 7.62 bullet of the M14 rifle would immediately knock a man down, the 5.56 bullet instead enters the body, quickly turns sideways after passing through only 4" of flesh, then breaks in two major pieces, as well as many smaller fragments.  During the Vietnam War, soldiers reported that shooting an enemy soldier with the M16 did not kill as quickly as the old 30 caliber weapons. Instead soldiers would follow a massive trail a blood a few feet away from where the enemy soldier had been hit to find him dead from massive blood loss.  Thus what was nominally a full-metal-jacket bullet had in effect roughly the same destructive capability as some hollow- or soft-point bullets

So the .223 round (like our former allies the Taliban, Osama bin Laden, and Saddam Hussein – we can really pick 'em can't we?!) is just another tool that has come back to haunt us.

Famous for its use in the military's M-16 rifle, the .223-caliber round is known for causing extensive tissue damage, says surgeon Ron Maier of the Northwest Regional Trauma Center at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Like all high-velocity bullets, the .223 slug passes through the body with an accompanying shock wave that whipsaws blood vessels and organ tissue that are inches away from the bullet. It’s called hydrostatic shock.
The "cavitation," or cavity, caused by the high-velocity shock wave may briefly expand the diameter of the bullet hole almost 2 inches, about 10 times the width of the slug itself, before it collapses behind, tearing tissue further.

Exotic weaponry has become a staple of movies and entertainment in recent years, but this is the reality we are seeing. And now it is completely out of control.

Here's a wound diagram. Youtube has lots of videos of bullet channels in ballistic gel.
