Obama denies being ‘Spock-like’

By Agence France-Presse
Saturday, December 24, 2011

It’s official: US President Barack Obama has nothing to do with highly logical, largely insensitive Mr. Spock character on the science fiction TV show “Star Trek.”

“What’s the biggest misconception about you?” ABC interviewer Barbara Walters asked Obama.

“Me being detached, or Spock-like, or very analytical,” said Obama. “People who know me know that I am a softie. I mean, stuff can choke me up very easily.”

Most LAPD downtown surveillance cameras inoperative

By Andrew Blankstein and Richard Winton, Los Angeles Times
December 24, 2011
Most of the surveillance cameras installed in downtown Los Angeles as part of an effort to help police crack down on crime have not been working for two years, according to interviews and records reviewed by The Times.

The cameras were installed over the last few years in a highly publicized partnership between local business groups, which purchased them, and the Los Angeles Police Department, which was to monitor and maintain them.

But officials said the majority of the cameras don't work. Some broke down and were never fixed. In the case of six cameras purchased to watch over Little Tokyo, LAPD officials admit that they were never plugged in to the police station's monitoring bank.

Frustration about the broken cameras has deepened in recent days after a string of recent stabbings on a block in skid row. In one case, a 53-year-old man died after being stabbed and beaten by more than half a dozen attackers. No arrests have been made.

Saturn, Titan and Dione

Saturn's third-largest moon, Dione, can be seen through the haze of the planet's largest moon, Titan, in this view of the two posing before the planet and its rings from NASA's Cassini spacecraft.

These views from NASA's Cassini spacecraft look toward the south polar region of Saturn's largest moon, Titan, and show a depression within the moon's orange and blue haze layers near the south pole.

Cops mock Seattle jogger nearly killed by a truck

BY SARAH LASKOW
21 DEC 2011 10:45 AM

In Seattle, a semi truck hit a jogger, nearly killing him. While the jogger lay almost dying, the police officers who responded to the accident were busy sneering at his decision not to drive a car. This being 2011, their comments were caught on video

Here's the most relevant excerpt, from the local TV station that obtained the video:

"That's why you drive a car!" the first one remarks.
"Yeah, don't try to jog to work, you dumb (expletive)," said the other.

Now, bikers are often subjected to such 'tude, but joggers? Isn't it a god-given right in this country to get your jog on? Or at least a right endorsed by Bill Clinton in the 1990s? Washington state has even been encouraging good citizens like the injured man to use alternative forms of transportation while a major route, the Alaskan Way Viaduct, is closed. Really, this sort of incident is how we know the country is deifying the car to a ridiculous extent. And also how we know that cops still haven’t mastered the concept of “everything, including phones and cars, has a camera in it now.”

Toon: Here, Use Mine!

December 23, 2011

Question- Is there a procedure for asking for a new subtopic to be created?

For as long as I've been posting here I have gotten comments about DU'ers wanting a specific "Cartoon" or "Toon" topic (or subtopic, whatever). Is there a way we can vote on it? Or to somehow show that we have support for this subject? The whole "what gets its own topic" subject is pretty confusing to me, some things carried over from DU2, some were changed (i.e. Guns, Editorials), some were added and some lost or combined. Anyway, any thoughts from the Admins on how to get a new "Toon" topic added?
