Felony charges filed against UC and a UCLA chemistry professor after fatal laboratory fire

Felony charges have been filed against the University of California and a UCLA chemistry professor in connection with a laboratory fire that killed a staff research assistant three years ago.

On Dec. 29, 2008, Sheharbano "Sheri" Sangji, 23, was severely burned over nearly half of her body when air-sensitive chemicals burst into flames during an experiment and ignited her clothing. Sangji, who was not wearing a protective lab coat, died 18 days later.

Her death raised questions about lab safety practices at UCLA and about Sangji's training and supervision by professor Patrick Harran, a prominent researcher who joined the faculty in July 2008.

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office charged Harran and the UC regents with three counts each of willfully violating occupational health and safety standards, resulting in Sangji's death. Harran and UCLA are accused of failing to correct unsafe work conditions in a timely manner, to require clothing appropriate for the work being done and to provide proper chemical safety training.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Educational DVDs for free

See link for details. Some pretty interesting looking titles, although I haven't personally watched any. Can't beat the price, though.

Houston-area woman organizes breastfeeding flash mob at Target stores

Breastfeeding moms are planning more than 100 “nurse-ins” across the country today, rallying in support of a Houston-area woman who says she was harassed last month while nursing her infant son at a Webster Target store.

The nursing flash mobs are planned in 35 states after women heard about the case of Michelle Hickman, who says employees made her feel uncomfortable when she fed her son at the store while Christmas shopping last month, KHOU-TV reports

Hickman’s protest plans have generated national media coverage and the Facebook nurse-in page had more than 6,000 members as of Wednesday morning.
This isn’t the first time mom’s have been irked by Target’s attitude toward breastfeeding, BabyCenter blogger Betsy Shaw points out. In 2006, a woman was shooed from the fitting rooms for nursing her baby. Target made a public statement in response to that incident.

Cranky croc named Elvis steals Aussie zoo worker's lawn mower

By KRISTEN GELINEAU, Associated Press

Wednesday, December 28, 2011

(12-28) 06:19 PST SYDNEY, (AP) --

A giant saltwater crocodile named Elvis with an apparent affinity for household machinery charged at an Australian reptile park worker Wednesday before stealing his lawn mower.

Tim Faulkner, operations manager at the Australian Reptile Park, north of Sydney, was one of three workers tending to the lawn in Elvis' enclosure when he heard reptile keeper Billy Collett yelp. Faulkner looked up to see the 16-foot (5-meter), 1,100-pound (500-kilogram) crocodile lunging out of its lagoon at Collett, who warded the creature off with his mower.

"Before we knew it, the croc had the mower above his head," Faulkner said. "He got his jaws around the top of the mower and picked it up and took it underwater with him."

Phoenix man learns cat was euthanized over money

Recovering addict's beloved cat taken to Humane Society for care was euthanized
by Robert Anglen - Dec. 27, 2011 08:39 PM
The Arizona Republic

A cat that helped a Phoenix man overcome his heroin addiction was euthanized just hours after he brought it to an Arizona Humane Society for treatment of a laceration.

Humane Society officials confirmed Tuesday that the 9-month-old cat, named Scruffy, was put down not because of its wounds, but because its owner could not immediately pay for its care.

Scruffy's owner, Daniel Dockery, who had been searching for the cat since taking it to the Humane Society's Campus for Compassion on West Dobbins Road three weeks ago, said he was devastated.

"Now I've got to think about how I failed that beautiful animal," Dockery, 49, said. "I failed her. ... That's so wrong. There was no reason for her not to be treated."
