The search for offshore oil begins with a boom.
Before the oil rigs arrive and the boring begins, operators need to fire intense seismic blasts repeatedly into the ocean to find oil deposits.
For decades, environmental rules that protected whales and other marine life from this cacophony have limited the location and frequency of these blasts — preventing oil companies from exploring, and therefore operating, off much of the nation's coasts.
Now these safeguards are quietly being dismantled.

Coal Generator That Trump Tried to Save Files for Bankruptcy
A power generator that pleaded for the Trump administration’s help in bailing out struggling coal and nuclear plants has filed for bankruptcy.
FirstEnergy Solutions Corp., its subsidiaries and FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co. listed $550 million in cash to continue operations and meet obligations to employees in a Chapter 11 filing in Federal Court in Akron, Ohio, according to a March 31 statement distributed by PR Newswire. Parent FirstEnergy Corp. is not part of the filing, the company said in a separate statement.
The move comes after the FirstEnergy unit on March 29 called on Energy Secretary Rick Perry to declare a grid emergency and guarantee profit for ailing coal and nuclear generators, including its own. Perry had drafted an earlier plan to compensate reactors and coal units more for their power, but federal regulators shot that down in January.

Snapchat throws shade at Facebook with Russian bot filter
Snapchat is taking full advantage of Facebook’s position in the news cycle on April Fools’ Day this year with a genius amount of shade. After trolling Facebook last year with a lighthearted Instagram-style filter, Snapchat is going one step further with a Facebook filter that’s designed to recreate Russian bots liking your posts. The filter places a Facebook UI around your photo with Cyrillic script-like text, and even includes likes from “your mum” and “a bot.”
The Cyrillic script is an obvious nod to Russia, and the news that more than 50,000 bots on Facebook, with links to the Russian government, were used to influence the 2016 US presidential election. The “your mum” like is also a hint at Facebook’s older user base, and Snapchat used the same joke during its Instagram April Fools’ last year. Snapchat’s filter will only be available today, for the annual idiocy of April Fools’ Day.

China imposing new tariffs on US meat, fruit, other products

BEIJING (AP) — China said it’s rolling out new tariffs on meat, fruit and other products from the United States as retaliation against taxes approved by U.S. President Donald Trump on imported steel and aluminum.
The Chinese finance ministry said in a statement that the new tariffs begin Monday. The announcement follows warnings Chinese officials have made for several weeks in an escalating trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies.
China’s Customs Tariff Commission is increasing the tariff rate on pork products and aluminum scrap by 25 percent. It’s also imposing a new 15 percent tariff on 120 other imported U.S. commodities, from almonds to apples and berries.
The White House didn’t respond to a message from The Associated Press on Sunday seeking comment.
