The Dark Future of Phone Jamming

Phone jamming is about to get political. Everyone from police to governments are using simple devices that prevent people from making calls or texting in certain areas — and they're doing it to control the flow of information. Let's take a look at these devices, their legality and current uses. Then we'll look at how this technology will be used against you in the future.

The simple science behind blocking your phone calls

Cell phone jammers work by transmitting radio waves on the same frequency used by your digital cell phone. By emitting such a signal, communications between your phone and a cellular communications tower is disrupted.

In the United States and South America, most digital mobile phones operate on a a 1.9 GHz frequency band, while 900 Mhz and 1.8 GHz bands are used across most of Europe and Asia. Even if your phone operates on multiple bands, manipulation of a single band is enough to cause a call to fail by disturbing the outgoing call or incoming voice data.

Afghanistan sees rise in ‘dancing boys’ exploitation

By Ernesto Londoño,

DEHRAZI, Afghanistan — The 9-year-old boy with pale skin and big, piercing eyes captivated Mirzahan at first sight.

“He is more handsome than anyone in the village,” the 22-year-old farmer said, explaining why he is grooming the boy as a sexual partner and companion. There was another important factor that made Waheed easy to take on as a bacha bazi, or a boy for pleasure: “He doesn’t have a father, so there is no one to stop this.”

A growing number of Afghan children are being coerced into a life of sexual abuse. The practice of wealthy or prominent Afghans exploiting underage boys as sexual partners who are often dressed up as women to dance at gatherings is on the rise in post-Taliban Afghanistan, according to Afghan human rights researchers, Western officials and men who participate in the abuse.

“Like it or not, there was better rule of law under the Taliban,” said Dee Brillenburg Wurth, a child-protection expert at the U.N. mission in Afghanistan, who has sought to persuade the government to address the problem. “They saw it as a sin, and they stopped a lot of it.”

California pastor held in torture of 13-year-old

(04-04) 17:58 PDT Corona, Calif. (AP) --

The pastor of a Riverside County storefront church and two of his followers were charged with assaulting a 13-year-old boy who authorities said was disciplined by being pinched with pliers, beaten with a shovel, forced to dig a grave and threatened with death.

Suspect Lonny Remmers, 54, of Corona pleaded not guilty Wednesday to assault with a deadly weapon and inflicting corporal injury on a child. Nick Craig, 22, and Darryll Jeter Jr., 28, pleaded not guilty to kidnapping, assault and other felonies, prosecutors said.

They were arrested on Friday and remained jailed Wednesday. It was not immediately clear whether they had obtained attorneys.

If convicted, Remmers could face up to seven years in prison. The other men could face up to 19 years and fours month each, said John Hall, a spokesman for the district attorney's office.

Paul Krugman- The BS Cult

April 4, 2012, 9:08 AM
The Bowles-Simpson Cult
A brief shout-out to Stan Collender, the mild-mannered budget analyst who finally says what must be said: the Very Serious People who keep pushing the Bowles-Simpson deficit plan as some kind of talisman of fiscal responsibility are delusional and deeply unserious:

B-S and some of their biggest supporters then made a huge mistake when they expressed surprise and extreme disappointment that the Obama administration didn’t make the co-chairs’ recommendation the basis of its fiscal 2012 budget, that is, the first one it submitted after the commission ended.

That demonstrated a level of political tone deafness that seriously hurt the credibility of what had now become a B-S cult. They were seriously suggesting that the Obama White House unilaterally support the tax increases and spending cuts included in the two co-chairs’ plan even though it was virtually guaranteed that the GOP would never agree to do the same and would punish Democrats for doing so.

Voter Suppression, Again, in Minnesota This Time

By ANDREW ROSENTHAL
I never cease to be amazed–in a really bad way–at the lengths to which Republican lawmakers will go to cut down the number of people who get to vote (preferably, of course, people who might vote Democratic).

The Justice Department has been fighting discriminatory voter ID requirements and other ballot-blocking measures around the country, with some success. Some courts have been doing their job too by striking down some of these laws.

So the Minnesota Republicans who form that state’s Senate majority decided to take another route–amend the state’s constitution to make it harder for people to vote.

The Senate voted 35-29 today for a proposed amendment that would require all voters at the polls to show a photo ID, stiffen eligibility requirements for registration and limit acceptable ID forms to “government issued” ones. (That last measure makes it harder for students; their college ID would not be valid.)

Drunk Canadians strike car wash

METRO VANCOUVER - Chalk up this cleansing experience - for a trio of young men in Abbotsford - to booze and bubbles.

And perhaps too much TV, a la Jackass, an American reality series that features dangerous, crude and ludicrous stunts and pranks.

After the three intoxicated twenty year olds went to a car wash with a shopping buggy about midnight last night, Abbotsford police posted a tweet warning that pressure washing yourself will not increase "intelligence or sobriety."

The trio had stripped down - loaded themselves into the cart - and selected either "typhoon" or "super typhoon" and tried to wash themselves and the buggy.

The Abbotsford police were alerted when neighbours heard screaming.
