n2doc's Journal'He would rather have a dead son than a gay son': Former foster mom speaks about shooting
HENDERSON (KSNV News3LV) Friends and family are remembering a 14-year-old son who Henderson police say was shot and killed by his own father.
People close to the murder victim say part of the argument leading to the shooting was about the teen's sexual orientation.
Friends of Giovanni Melton remember an energetic teenager bringing smiles to everyone he met.
Coronado High School Senior Bailey Schultz says Melton went to her school.
"Its just sad. He was young and he had a lot to live for," said Schultz.

Mammals Literally Came Out of the Dark Once the Dinos Were Gone
The first mammals emerged during the reign of the dinosaurs, adopting a nocturnal lifestyle to stay safe. It was only until the dinosaurs were wiped off the face of the planet that certain mammals began to assert themselves during the daylight hours, according to new research.
New evidence published in Nature Ecology & Evolution suggests that the first diurnal (daytime) mammals emerged at some point between 52 to 33 million years ago. The timing would suggest that mammals had been stuck in a nocturnal mode of existence during the reign of the dinosaurs, which ended some 66 million years ago, and that the sudden disappearance of dinos allowed mammals to assert themselves during the day. The new study improves our understanding of mammalian evolution, but other researchers say more evidence is required for us to be absolutely certain about the timing of this important transition.
Mammalian fossils dating back to this period are hard to come by, but even if paleontologists and evolutionary biologists had tons of fossils, it would still be hard to discern an animals behavior from a pile of bonesincluding whether or not an animal was active during the day or night. That said, scientists are reasonably confident, based on the scant fossil evidence they do have, that the first mammals were nocturnal. Theyre just not sure when our distant ancestors first started to emerge from the darkness.
To get a better sense of when this happened, a team of researchers from the University of College-London and Tel Aviv University constructed multiple family trees (phylogenies) based on the 2,415 species of mammals alive today.

Florida State University bans all fraternities and sororities after student death
Florida State University President John Thrasher has announced a ban on all fraternities and sororities following the death of a student after a house party Friday.
"I want to send a serious message, I really do," said Thrasher. "We've got a serious problem."
FSU student, 20-year-old Andrew Coffey of Pompano Beach was found unresponsive at about 10:25 a.m. Friday, the morning after a house party about a mile from campus. Coffey, a Pi Kappa Phi fraternity pledge, was given medical treatment but died on the scene.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the students family and friends, said Pi Kappa Phi Chief Executive Officer Mark E. Timmes in a statement provided to the Tallahassee Democrat. We appreciate the partnership and support from the Division of Student Affairs during this difficult time.

Head of Office of Financial Research resigning
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of a U.S. government agency created to monitor financial markets after the 2007-2009 financial crisis will resign from the post at the end of this year.
Richard Berner, director of the Office of Financial Research (OFR), will be leaving that agency on Dec. 31, the Treasury Department announced on Monday. Berner helped create the agency as a Treasury official under President Barack Obama, and has led it since its creation in 2013.
The Treasury did not say who would replace Berner, but his exit gives President Donald Trump another opportunity to shift government watchdogs in a more industry-friendly direction.
Berner helped establish the agency as a Treasury Department official before becoming its first and only director. He is leaving roughly one year before his current term expires in January 2019.
