Dr. Larry Nassar Sentenced to 40 to 175 Years for Sexual Abuse

Source: NYT

LANSING, Mich. — After an extraordinary seven-day hearing that drew more than 150 young women to speak out publicly about sexual abuse they said was committed by Dr. Lawrence G. Nassar, the former team doctor for the American gymnastics team, a judge sentenced him on Wednesday to 40 to 175 years in prison.

He had faced a minimum term of 25 to 40 years.

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, who had opened her courtroom to all the young women who wanted to address Dr. Nassar directly, and forced him to listen when he pleaded to make it stop, handed down the sentence, saying to Dr. Nassar, “You’ve done nothing to deserve to walk outside a prison again.”

“I just signed your death warrant,” she said as she pronounced the sentence.

EPAs budget has been devastated for decades: Heres the math

When Donald Trump rolled out his budget, which cut the Environmental Protection Agency by more than any other department, he said his goal was to “shrink the bloated federal bureaucracy.” He clearly meant to leave the impression that EPA had gotten too big and costly.

But the facts tell a very different story. Far from growing too big, EPA’s budget has been devastated over the last four decades. Other than a bump in the early Obama administration, funding for the agency has been in a long downward spiral.

In fact, contrary to Trump’s implication, EPA’s funding in real dollars is less than half of what it was in the late 1970s. Here’s the math:

In 1979, the agency’s budget was $5.4 billion. In 2017, its funding was $8.2 billion. But adjust that for inflation — so you can actually compare what EPA had to spend on enforcement, state and local support, science and all its other responsibilities — and the 2017 budget was really worth just $2.4 billion in 1979 dollars.

Rick Perry: US not just exporting energy, were exporting freedom

Energy Secretary Rick Perry characterized the Trump administration’s energy agenda as a world-changing development that spreads freedom around the globe.

Perry framed exports of fossil fuels like oil, natural gas and coal as a central part of Trump’s “Energy Dominance” agenda, in which the administration is aiming to dramatically increase the domestic production of fossil fuels.

“The United States is not just exporting energy, we’re exporting freedom,” Perry said on Fox Business’s “Mornings with Maria” in an interview from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“We’re exporting to our allies in Europe the opportunity to truly have a choice of where do you buy your energy from. That’s freedom. And that kind of freedom is priceless.”

Shocking Cop Corruption Trial Kicks Off in Baltimore

A former Baltimore police detective took to the stand Tuesday as opening arguments began in the trial of two Baltimore Police detectives who were members of the corrupt undercover Gun Trace Task Force. They are accused of robbery, racketeering and collecting overtime for hours not served, among other charges.

Detectives Daniel Hersl and Marcus Taylor pleaded not guilty to the charges, but six other officers charged have already pleaded guilty; with several expected to testify for the prosecution.

The Baltimore Police Department has been in turmoil since the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old African American man who died in police custody after being handcuffed and transported in the back of a police van, three years ago. The incident caused protests and an investigation by the Department of Justice which found a pattern or practice of civil rights violations within the department.

Presidents Club: Leading businessmen caught 'groping' and 'exposing themselves' to female hostesses

Senior businessmen at an all-male charity dinner groped and propositioned women hostesses who were told to wear “black sexy shoes” and black underwear, it has been claimed.

Undercover Financial Times reporters said they witnessed the behaviour at the annual Presidents Club charity dinner in London’s Dorchester Hotel on Thursday night.

The black-tie event, attended by 360 leading figures from business, politics and finance, allegedly included auction lots involving a free lapdance at a Soho club and plastic surgery that could be used to “add spice to your wife”.

The FT reported that by midnight an unnamed “society figure” was telling a hostess “I want you to down that glass [of champagne], rip off your knickers and dance on that table.”

After Trump Administration Says Terrorism No Longer Top Priority, U.S. Citizens Killed in Kabul

Multiple U.S. citizens were killed in an apparent terror attack on a Kabul hotel over the weekend, State Department officials said Monday, in an incident that occurred just a day after the Trump administration said terrorism was no longer its top priority when it comes to national security.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack at Kabul's Intercontinental Hotel, which killed at least 22 people. Fourteen were foreigners and eight were Afghans. It's not yet clear how many Americans were killed. Newsweek has reached out to the U.S. State Department.

The attack began Saturday and carried on into Sunday, lasting roughly 12 hours. Five gunmen were responsible, according Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid. In 2011, the Taliban-linked Haqqani network, a criminal organization, was responsible for an attack at the same hotel that killed 21 people.
