Clinton stuck to her populist themes while speaking today in Columbus, Ohio.
I know, I know, some of you “don’t trust her,” but given opportunities to backtrack from primary promises, Hillary Clinton is actually doing the opposite—she’s doubling down. Some choice bits from her speech today:
I believe we can compete and win in the global economy. And reject any agreements like the partnership that don't meet my high bar for rising wages.
“The partnership” is obviously TPP. Clinton took too long during campaign season to come out against it (a factor in Bernie Sanders’ rise, I believe). I still believe it had more to do with trying not to embarrass the president than any real support for the trade deal, but whether cynical or not, her new position has held.
(Trump) has no ideas how to strengthen medicare or expand social security and his tax plan.
The campaign to expand Social Security appeared to be a pipe dream when a handful of bloggers (really, Atrios) started pushing it four years ago. It was an idea that was anathema to the Third Way crowd as recently as late 2015. And yet here we are, barely six months later, with our “establishment” presidential nominee proudly supporting it.

Secret Service veterans denounce anti-Clinton tell-all book
Former agents blast writer Gary Byrne for having 'underlying motives.'

The author of a new tell-all book about Hillary Clinton could never have seen any of what he claims — he was too low-ranking — say several high-level members of Secret Service presidential details, including the president of the Association of Former Agents of the United States Secret Service.
On Tuesday, AFAUSSS, which is strictly nonpartisan, is set to release a statement blasting Gary Byrne author of “Crisis in Character,” saying members “strongly denounce” the book, which they add has made security harder by eroding the trust between agents and the people they protect.
“There is no place for any self-moralizing narratives, particularly those with an underlying motive,” reads the statement from the group’s board of directors, which says Byrne has politics and profit on his mind.
AFAUSSS rarely issues public statements of any kind.

People familiar with West Wing security laugh at the idea that Byrne or any uniformed officer ever would have walked in on Bill Clinton anywhere, whether in a meeting or, as a New York Post article over the weekend claims, in the middle of a make-out session in the Map Room with the late daughter of former Vice President Walter Mondale. The Secret Service presidential detail would have stopped him. (That affair was a well-worn rumor during the Clinton years, though strongly denied by Eleanor Mondale, who died of brain cancer in 2011.)

Washington Post On Hillary and Donald’s Unfavorable Ratings: ‘There Is Just No Comparison’
The media are fond of reminding us that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump both have high unfavorable ratings. However, the reasons for those unfavorables couldn’t be more different – not to mention that Donald’s are “setting modern records for political toxicity.”

Much breathless discussion has been had among members of the national media about the high unfavorable numbers attached to both major-party presidential candidates. But one of these things is not like the other.
For one, Hillary’s high unfavorables are, as explained by Peter Daou, “the result of a billionaire-funded conservative effort to destroy her image.” For decades, she has been subjected to a relentless campaign of character assaults and rank sexism, until demonstrably false narratives about her get repeated – even and especially by journalists ostensibly reporting only facts – as though they were true.

Greg Sargent took a look at an analysis of Donald’s “historically high” unfavorables and notes: “While Hillary Clinton is also disliked, there is just no comparison to Trump.”

Conversely, most of the people who don’t like Donald can articulate precisely why without hesitation. There’s no invocation of some hazy unease based on something they might have heard once upon a time. It’s a concrete list of objections, a litany recounting any number of his myriad failings.
And this despite the fact that over the past year, the media have been tipping the scales in his favor.

Do you remember what happened when the Berlin Wall fell? Until that moment, nobody realized just how decadent Communism had become. It had tanks, guns, and nukes, but nobody really believed in its ideology anymore; its officials and enforcers were mere careerists, who folded at the first shock.
It seems to me that you need to think about what happened to the G.O.P. this election cycle the same way.
The Republican establishment was easily overthrown because it was already hollow at the core. Donald Trump’s taunts about “low-energy” Jeb Bush and “little Marco” Rubio worked because they contained a large element of truth. When Mr. Bush and Mr. Rubio dutifully repeated the usual conservative clichés, you could see that there was no sense of conviction behind their recitations. All it took was the huffing and puffing of a loud-mouthed showman to blow their houses down.
But as Mr. Trump is finding out, the Democratic establishment is different.
As some political scientists are now acknowledging, America’s two major parties are not at all symmetric. The G.O.P. is, or was until Mr. Trump arrived, a top-down hierarchical structure enforcing a strict, ideologically pure party line. The Democrats, by contrast, are a “coalition of social groups,” from teachers’ unions to Planned Parenthood, seeking specific benefits from government action.

Hillary Clinton’s super PAC has begun spending $145 million on ads in eight states through November — and there’s a realistic path for her to win the White House even if she carries only one of them.
It’s a sign of how strongly tilted the Electoral College map is in Clinton’s favor, as she begins a general election campaign building upon the demographic and geographic coalition that President Obama rode to two electoral landslides. Donald Trump, in contrast, must dramatically reimagine and redraw the political landscape to capture the presidency.
Rather than expand the 2012 map in any significant way, the Clinton campaign and its allies want to replicate it. They are obsessed with choking off Trump’s narrower path, hoping to strike a decisive victory in Florida — multiple Clinton officials declared there is nearly no path for Trump without it — while aggressively defending the Democratic-leaning states in the industrial Midwest that Trump has talked most about flipping — most importantly, Pennsylvania. Campaign officials say they think Clinton can turn out more female voters than Obama did. But they see one surrogate in particular as key to recreating the Obama coalition: President Barack Obama himself.

Sanders Supporters Seek Ways to Keep ‘Bernie’ Movement Alive

CHICAGO—With visions of what-might-have-been, the liberal activists behind Bernie Sanders’s campaign commiserated over his loss to Hillary Clinton and plotted ways to keep the “Bernie” movement alive now that the candidate is exiting the presidential stage.
At a weekend-long conference, they were thinking through their role in a general election that presents a choice they had hoped to avoid: Mrs. Clinton or presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Mr. Sanders wasn’t at the conference dubbed “The People’s Summit.” But the Vermont senator was everywhere all the same. Millennials walked through the halls wearing Sanders T-shirts bearing sketches of his receding hairline. In panels, participants dissected the campaign’s rise and fall and talked wistfully about how close Mr. Sanders came to vanquishing Mrs. Clinton.
The conference’s lead organizer is National Nurses United, one of the Sanders campaign’s most zealous backers. The approximately 3,000 attendees included socialists, union officials, community organizers and college students. Together, they represent the wing of the Sanders coalition that is the least enthused about coalescing behind the Clinton campaign.
“It’s a terrible place we find ourselves in,” said Becky Bond, a former adviser to Mr. Sanders’s campaign, in a session titled “Understanding our Movement Moment.”
The best a Clinton presidency would produce is a nation “slightly worse than it is under Obama,” Ms. Bond said.

Rosario Dawson, an actress who attended the conference, said in an interview she has no use for any pro-Clinton messages crossing her cellphone: “If she wants our vote, then she needs to go get it,” said Ms. Dawson, who campaigned for Mr. Sanders. “We didn’t register to vote and phone bank and canvass for her for a reason.”

Nina Turner, a Sanders supporter and former Ohio state senator, said that even though she has been a lifelong Democrat, “a third party might not be bad for this country.”
“Let’s shake it up,” Ms. Turner said in an interview. “I want to see the Democratic Party live up to our values. And if we refuse to, then we need something to shake us up.”

The Dark History and Destructive Legacy of Republican Fearmongering

n his piece, Sickness: The Media and Republicans Have Done the Orlando Killer’s Bidding, Peter Daou explains how the media and Republicans are doing the killer’s bidding by elevating him to celebrity status and turning him into a martyr of a specific ideology. Here, I follow up with an exploration of how the Republican culture of cultivating a base around othering, scapegoating, and fearmongering – combined with reckless rhetoric on the necessity of guns for self-defense – ensures that the sort of violence we saw in Orlando keeps happening.
One of the limitations of a predominantly two-party system in a vastly diverse nation, comprised of many demographics with competing desires and needs, is that parties have to form their base by building coalitions.
There are challenges for both parties in bringing together disparate groups who share enough in common to work in concert to elect a majority. But the biggest challenge facing Republican elites has always been how you convince people who aren’t obscenely wealthy to vote for a platform designed to exploit them.
Over decades, they developed and fine-tuned a strategy based on appealing to bigotry, to othering and scapegoating and victim-blaming. And then they dressed it up in cynical language about morality, patriotism, and nostalgia.
Long before Donald Trump had the chutzpah to make it his actual campaign slogan, the Republican Party was promising to Make America Great Again.
Usually couched in the deceivingly pleasant language of “tradition,” Republican leaders have long traded on the conjured idea of an American golden era, circa 1945 to 1960, after boys who were ripped from the arms of their sweethearts, and sent to another continent to fight a great war against tyranny and despair, had returned home as men, as heroes, and set to work, every last one of them, making babies with doting wives and grabbing the American Dream with both hands in the dawn of suburbia.

Hillary Clinton: An open letter on Charleston

One year ago today, our nation lost nine precious lives. They were mothers and fathers, students and coaches, pastors and choir members. They were men and women of faith, each filled with passion and love, and with so much left to give. For many, time has done little to dull the pain of their loss. I still remember my grief and confusion when I heard the news. But their deaths have not been in vain.
"Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things," Scripture teaches us. "Love never fails."
On that evening in the "Mother Emanuel" AME Church, Clementa, Cynthia, Susie, Ethel, DePayne, Tywanza, Daniel, Sharonda and Myra lived out the lessons of their faith, like always -- welcoming a stranger for prayer and fellowship, offering love without a second thought.
Their spirit of love remained long after they were gone. In court, one by one, grieving parents and siblings looked at the young man who had taken so much from them and said, "I forgive you." And the entire Charleston community -- black and white, Christian, Muslim and Jewish, and so many others -- came together to stand up to hate and bigotry, providing love to one another instead.
Filled with that love, we have made progress. The Confederate flag that flew on the South Carolina State House grounds has been removed. Young people have called out for much-needed reforms to our criminal justice system. Mothers who lost their children to gun violence are channeling their grief into action and turning their mourning into a movement for common-sense gun reform.
But we have much more to do.
Another mass shooting, in Orlando, broke our hearts earlier this week. An average of 90 people a day are killed by gun violence in our country. This must stop. A good first step is closing the "Charleston Loophole" in our gun laws, which allows a person otherwise prohibited from buying a gun -- such as a domestic abuser or other violent criminal -- to buy one if a background check isn't completed within three business days. This loophole allowed the alleged Charleston shooter to buy his gun despite his prior arrest record. How many more innocent people need to be cut down before we act and close this dangerous loophole?
On that terrible evening and every day since, Americans across the country have joined our hearts with the people of Charleston and South Carolina. Millions of Americans are still walking with them -- in grief, solidarity and determination.
In the spirit of the Charleston Nine, let's bridge our divides, fight for change and remember that love never fails.
