Wikileaks Put Women in Turkey in Danger, for No Reason

Just days after a bloody coup attempt shook Turkey, Wikileaks dumped some 300,000 emails they chose to call “Erdogan emails.” In response, Turkey’s internet governance body swiftly blocked access to Wikileaks.

For many, blocking Wikileaks was confirmation that the emails were damaging to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the government, revealing corruption or other wrongdoing. There was a stream of articles about “censorship.” Even U.S. National Security Agency whistle-blower Edward Snowden tweeted the news of the Wikileaks block with the comment: “How to authenticate a leak.”

But Snowden couldn’t have been more wrong about an act that was irresponsible, of no public interest and of potential danger to millions of ordinary, innocent people, especially millions of women in Turkey. And yet Western media reports, ranging from Reuters to Wired, some from journalists I know and respect, made the same assumptions Snowden did. They merely reported the block as an act of censorship and reported Wikileaks’ allegations of what the emails may contain, without apparently any cursory check.

Journalists and anti-censorship activists who I am in touch with in Turkey have been combing through the leaked documents, and I am not aware of anything “newsworthy” being uncovered. According to the collective searching capacity of long-term activists and journalists in Turkey, none of the “Erdogan emails” appear to be emails actually from Erdogan or his inner circle. Nobody seems to be able to find a smoking gun exposing people in positions of power and responsibility. This doesn’t rule out something eventually emerging, but there have been several days of extensive searching.

However, this dump does include massive databases containing sensitive and private information of millions of ordinary people, including a special database of almost all adult women in Turkey.

Va. high court invalidates McAuliffe’s order restoring felon voting rights

Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s decision to restore voting rights to more than 200,000 felons violates Virginia’s constitution, the state Supreme Court ruled Friday, dealing a major blow to the Democratic governor with implications for the November presidential race in the crucial swing state.

In a 4-to-3 decision, the court ruled that McAuliffe overstepped his clemency powers by issuing a sweeping order in April restoring rights to all ex-offenders who are no longer incarcerated or on probation or parole. The court agreed with state Republicans who challenged McAuliffe’s order, arguing that the governor can only restore voting rights on a case-by-case basis and not en masse.

“Never before have any of the prior 71 Virginia Governors issued a clemency order of any kind — including pardons, reprieves, commutations, and restoration orders — to a class of unnamed felons without regard for the nature of the crimes or any other individual circumstances relevant to the request,” Chief Justice Donald W. Lemons wrote for the majority. “To be sure, no Governor of this Commonwealth, until now, has even suggested that such a power exists.”

But a defiant McAuliffe released a statement late Friday saying that he would pick up his executive pen and restore the rights of those felons on an individual basis, even if it means signing more than 200,000 orders.

'Private' video of Virgin Islands Democratic delegate posted online

A "private" videotape of the Virgin Islands' delegate to Congress, Democratic Rep. Stacey Plaskett, which showed her husband naked and wearing makeup, was posted online Wednesday night but later removed, the freshman lawmaker said in a statement Thursday. A topless "selfie" of Plaskett also was being circulated.

Plaskett said in the statement that her computer had been hacked and someone copied personal "photographs and a private family video" of her and her husband, Jonathan Buckney-Small.

The video shows a naked Buckney-Small wearing makeup as Plaskett films it, according to news reports and sources who have seen the recording. Plaskett is heard speaking to her husband in the recording. One of the couple's childen makes an appearance in the video as well, according to the statement.

The video was initially described to POLITICO as a "sex tape," but Plaskett aides disputed that characterization of the recording. A Virgin Islands news organization described it as a "bizarre video."

Belarusian journalist Pavel Sheremet killed in car bombing

Pavel Sheremet, 44, a prominent Belarusian journalist who had been working in neighboring Ukraine where there are relatively fewer barriers to independent reporting, was killed in a car bombing in Kiev on Wednesday, local media said.

An investigation is underway. Anton Gerashchenko, advisor to the Ukrainian interior minister, said in a Facebook post that the explosion was triggered by a remotely operated bomb planted underneath the car.

Born in Belarus, Sheremet moved to Ukraine two years ago, where he hosted a morning radio show for Radio Vesti. He previously worked in Russia as a TV host.

He was jailed by the Belarusian government in 1997, allegedly for illegally crossing the porous border between Belarus and Lithuania while filming, but he was known widely for this criticism of Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko.

Texas Lt. Gov.: BLM Protesters 'Hypocrites' For Running From Gunfire

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) on Friday afternoon railed against the people who took part in the protest in Dallas on Thursday night, charging that the protesters were "hypocrites" because, as he framed it, they were anti-police but expected the police to protect them once the shooting started.

"All those protesters last night, they ran the other way, expecting the men and women in blue to turn around and protect them. What hypocrites," Patrick said on Fox News. "I understand the First Amendment. I understand freedom of speech, and I defend it. It is in our Constitution and is in our soul, but you can't go out on social media and mainstream media and everywhere else and say that the police are racist or police are hateful or the police are killers."

Patrick said that the officers killed in the shooting at the scene of the protest "lost their life protecting people who were protesting against them."

Patrick recognized that the Dallas protest over the deadly shootings of black men by police in Louisiana and Minnesota on Thursday night was peaceful, but he placed some blame for the deadly shooting on those who speak out against police violence.

"I do blame people on social media, with their hatred towards police. I do blame, I saw Jesse Jackson — I think it was on Fox the other night — calling police racist without any facts. I do blame former Black Lives Matters protests. Last night was peaceful, but others have not been," Patrick said on Fox News.

For making the target on our collective backs even bigger, for handing the moral high ground right back to the police forces and conservative America (something I would have thought damned near impossible), taking away any chance in the immediate future for peaceful protest, indirectly justifying the murders of Sterling and Castile, and getting the world media to talk about Dallas instead of Baton Rouge and Minneapolis...

EDIT: Since some want to jump on me for denouncing the murder of five police officers, let me amend my original post:

Yes, I get the anger, and don't you dare think for a second that I'm not angry myself... I still think about what happened to Trayvon Martin on a near-daily basis. My concern is that one meaningless night of "revenge" in Dallas only makes a bad situation that much worse, and takes us farther from what we're trying to accomplish. If you think that reprisal will magically make the nation's cops treat us better than before, I don't know what to tell you.

If people don't have the brainpower to think of a real, lasting solution to this crisis other than the lowest common denominator, All-American tried-and-true method of bullets and want to go out in some desperate, futile suicide mission, fine -- More power to them (even though it makes us no better than what we're fighting against)...
But please don't do it in a manner which will almost certainly taint BLM by association, and for the love of GOD, please don't brazenly exploit a peaceful gathering of your brothers and sisters to start an ambush -- This is not only cowardly, it's dishonorable.
