How to fly a real Boeing 737-800 after 1 month

Evidently there's this "Normal-guy-tries-to-work-extraordinary-jobs" Reality TV show in Belgium...Except unlike the stuff we see in the USA, it's actually good...

Any British DUers still around?

I was wondering what possible reason the BBC could have for junking the historic Television Centre...

Craig James accuses FOX Sports of religious discrimination

Former Patriots running back Craig James, who lost his job commentating on college football for FOX Sports after just one week, now says he was the victim of religious discrimination, and he has hired a lawyer to do something about it.

James spent one week working for FOX Sports Southwest before FOX announced that he would not be back, citing anti-gay comments James had made. James now says those comments were expressions of his religious beliefs, and he says FOX’s statement about his termination was tantamount to a ban on religious people working at the network.

“I was shocked that my personal religious beliefs were not only the reason for Fox Sports firing me but I was completely floored when I read stories quoting Fox Sports representatives essentially saying that people of faith are banned from working at FOX Sports,” James told Breitbart.com. “That is not right and surely someone made a terrible mistake.”

James was a Pro Bowler in 1985 and had a successful broadcasting career at ESPN, which he left to run for the U.S. Senate in his home state of Texas. James finished a distant fourth in the Republican primary, with 4 percent of the vote. ESPN said during James’s Senate campaign that he would not be brought back, and other than that one week at FOX Sports Southwest, he has not found work in broadcasting since leaving ESPN.

Latina bicyclists answer macho bike culture with their own chain gang

Growing up, Evelyn Martinez's mother didn't want her to ride a bike.

"She thinks it's not safe for women to be riding late at night, and cars are dangerous too," Martinez said.

Moreover, her mother told her: "Bicycles are for men."

But after a chance meeting last year, Martinez joined an all-female, predominantly Latino cycling group that is both an answer and a challenge to the aggressive male biking culture. Like men's bike crews, it defies L.A.'s monolithic car culture with an in-your-face ethic, reflected in its name: the Ovarian Psyco Cycles Brigade.

The group says the name "is a play on words intended to be playful and simultaneously create some sort of acknowledgment/acceptance/pride in one's historically oppressed body."

Without blushing, the women use "feminine positive" slogans and catchphrases too risque for a family newspaper.

"This is a way to empower ourselves and use language that describes and empowers us," said Maryann Aguirre, this summer's group leader.

I'm missing something here (really dumb, obvious question):

1. Why would Putin even do an op-ed in the NYT? As a world leader there are thousands of different ways he could have gotten that message out, and none of them would have garnered any less coverage...

2. Why would the Times print it??

Man Pays Tax Bill With Thousands of Single Dollar Bills to Protest 'Stolen' Money

Robert Fernandes, of Forks Township, Pennsylvania, wants people to know exactly how much he doesn't like paying his taxes. Last week, the father of three took his wife and children - and $7,143.54 in cash - to the tax collector. He paid the township tax bill in single dollar bills. And, just to make sure that he made his point, he posted the whole thing on YouTube:

Fernandes made his public statement to protest money that he claims is being "stolen" since he does not wish to "voluntarily" pay for services that he doesn't believe he benefits his family. Specifically, Fernandes' young children (ages 1, 4 and 7) are not enrolled in a brick and mortar school in the school district: Fernandes' wife is currently homeschooling the children. He said about the tax, "We don't even use the public system, yet I am being forced to pay all this money into a public school system. I don't think that's really either fair or just or even ethical. It would be the equivalent if McDonald's were to force vegetarians to pay for their cheeseburgers."

Well, er, McDonald's would force vegetarians to pay for cheeseburgers if they opted to show up at the restaurant and order them - even if they didn't eat them. And that's kind of what Fernandes did. These property taxes didn't sneak up on him: he moved to the district last year in search of lower property taxes. That should mean that he did a little bit of research before putting in the offer for his home - at least enough to know the tax rates. And he didn't accidentally land in Forks Township: he voluntarily moved his entire family to the township after snatching up a house at a short sale.
