Nissan recalls 165K newer vehicles due to risk they could turn off while in use

While not yet reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Nissan says it will recall about 165,000 newer vehicles due to the risk they could turn off while in motion.

The automaker confirmed the recall of the 2017-18 Juke, Frontier, Sentra, Versa, Versa Note, Micra, NV, NV200 and the NV taxi in the U.S. and Canada to both Consumer Reports and CNET's Roadshow. Nissan's Juke was discontinued after 2017, and its Micra is not available stateside.

Nissan tells Consumer Reports that affected vehicles equipped with a mechanical key could be at risk to a defect that causes it to "potentially move out of the 'ON' position" while in use.

The automaker says it is not aware of any incidents related to the recall, and that this measure is simply "out of an abundance of caution."

While the NHTSA had not yet issued a recall, Transport Canada issued a recall of the affected vehicles and advised owners to remove everything from their ignition key ring. It's also worth noting that Transport Canada reports that if one of the affected vehicles were to crash, there could be an increased risk of the air bags not deploying.

To search active recalls, use the NHTSA's website to search your 17-character VIN at this link: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls VIN numbers are typically located under the driver's side windshield, or along the inside of the doors behind the seat or under the steering wheel. Toyota to recall more than 1 million vehicles for fire risk

Toyota is planning to recall more than 1 million vehicles globally to fix a possible fire risk related to a wiring harness issue. The recall concerns some 192,000 vehicles in the United States.

The problematic wiring harness is associated with the vehicle's hybrid power unit, and vibrations and accumulating dirt can wear down the harness insulation at the connection point. In time, there is a possibility of an electrical short, creating a fire risk. Vehicles produced in Japan between June 2015 and May 2018 will be recalled to rectify the issue, and according to Toyota, there has been one incident in Japan where the short circuit caused the harness to smoke.

Affected vehicles include plug-in hybrid versions of the Prius and the C-HR crossover. As for U.S.-market vehicles, the recall will concern just Prius customers, according to Reuters. Around half of all the recalled vehicles have been sold in Japan. The total number of vehicles involved in the recall is 1.03 million. Earlier, Toyota recalled the Prius to fix a possible fuel tank issue, and there have also been airbag recalls related to the Prius.

Toyota says in its U.S.-market statement that it will inspect vehicles free of charge, and if the wire core on the hybrid unit harness has been exposed, it will be replaced. In cases where the core has not been exposed, protective tape will be applied to prevent the insulation from wearing. Owners will be notified of the pending recall starting in late September.

Dire Climate Change Warnings Cut From Trump Power-Plant Proposal

Last-minute edits spiked talk of the risk to future millennia

Changes made after draft landed at White House for review

Warnings about potentially severe consequences of climate change were deleted from a Trump administration plan to weaken curbs on power plant emissions during a White House review.

Drafts had devoted more than 500 words to highlighting the impacts -- more heat waves, intense hurricanes, heavy rainfalls, floods and water pollution -- as part of the proposal to replace Obama-era restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions. That language was left out of the Trump administration’s final analysis of the Environmental Protection Agency proposal, when it was unveiled Aug. 21.

Among the abandoned assertions: an acknowledgment that “the climate has continued to change, with new records being set” for global average surface temperatures, Arctic sea ice retreat, carbon dioxide concentrations and sea level rise, all markers of the phenomenon.

The administration also scrapped a reference to numerous “major scientific assessments” that “strengthen the case that GHGs endanger public health and welfare both for current and future generations.”

In a First, Japan Says Fukushima Radiation Caused Worker's Cancer Death

TOKYO — More than seven years after a devastating earthquake and tsunami triggered meltdowns at a nuclear power plant in Fukushima, Japan acknowledged for the first time this week that a worker died from cancer after being exposed to radiation.

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare said the man, who was not identified, had worked mostly at the Fukushima Daiichi plant over 28 years and had died of lung cancer.

Three years ago the government awarded workers’ compensation to a man who developed leukemia while working on the Fukushima cleanup, but this week marked the first acknowledgment that exposure to radiation at the site caused a death. The government has acknowledged that three other Fukushima workers developed leukemia and thyroid cancer after working on the plant cleanup. About 5,000 workers labor at the site daily.

The ministry said the man who died worked for a subcontractor to Tokyo Electric Power Company, the plant’s operator. He was in his 50s and was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2016. His family did not wish his precise date of death to be released, according to the health ministry.
