Trump plan to expand Gulf drilling ignores impacts on wildlife, lawsuit claims

MIAMI_A handful of environmental groups sued the Trump administration Thursday for failing to protect whales, sea turtles and other marine life in the Gulf of Mexico even as it pushes to expand drilling amid safety cutbacks.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Tampa, Earthjustice claimed the administration has yet to complete a long overdue study of hazards to wildlife from drilling following the 2010 explosion of BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig. The explosion, which left 11 workers dead, dumped at least 3 million barrels of oil into the Gulf, killing baby dolphins, causing heart problems in mahi mahi and leaving a trail of damage to marine life, from plankton to shrimp to oysters, that scientists are still trying to understand.

"You've got whales and sea turtles that not only have to contend with the everyday operations of drilling, but they have to rebuild their populations," said Earthjustice attorney Chris Eaton.

Following the spill, the Obama administration agreed to take another look at impacts from drilling. When it failed to complete a study by 2013, environmentalists sued. Wildlife officials agreed to complete it by 2015. It was never done.

A new assessment is even more critical now following Trump's move to undo Obama drilling bans and aggressively expand efforts, Eaton said. Earlier this year, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced plans to quadruple drilling in U.S. water, including Florida's Atlantic coast and in the eastern Gulf, where drilling was banned in 1988. Zinke quickly withdrew the plan after meeting with Florida Gov. Rick Scott in what critics called an election-year stunt.

Senate Sets Aside $3.5 Million to Aid Airports Impacted by Presidential TFRs

Financial aid is on the way for airports affected by presidential trips.

On June 7, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved $3.5 million in funding for airports in Florida and New Jersey that are being adversely affected by extended presidential TFRs. The money was included in the fiscal 2019 Transportation spending bill. Similar legislation was drafted by the House Appropriations Committee in early June.

Presidential TFRs have had significant impacts on airports since Donald Trump became president. An FBO operator at Palm Beach County Park Airport in Florida said weekend shutdowns can cause a loss of $30,000 in revenue, and up to $50,000 during holidays. The airports in the vicinity of President Trump’s most common TFRs in New Jersey and Florida have led to more than $1 million in net losses in 2017, AOPA reported.

“These funds will provide a real boost to the airports and businesses impacted in New Jersey and Florida,” said AOPA president Mark Baker.

The funding, which first surfaced in May, will be allocated to non-gateway airports and businesses that must close during the TFRs. Additionally, the House bill would require a study by the FAA for procedures that would allow certain approved GA pilots to fly during presidential TFRs.

The next steps in process for airports to receive the $3.5 million in aid will be for the two bills to be passed in the House and Senate, after which both bills will be reconciled. Once that is completed, they will head to President Trump for his signature.

How the Koch Brothers Are Killing Public Transit Projects Around the Country

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A team of political activists huddled at a Hardee’s one rainy Saturday, wolfing down a breakfast of biscuits and gravy. Then they descended on Antioch, a quiet Nashville suburb, armed with iPads full of voter data and a fiery script.

The group, the local chapter for Americans for Prosperity, which is financed by the oil billionaires Charles G. and David H. Koch to advance conservative causes, fanned out and began strategically knocking on doors. Their targets: voters most likely to oppose a local plan to build light-rail trains, a traffic-easing tunnel and new bus routes.

“Do you agree that raising the sales tax to the highest rate in the nation must be stopped?” Samuel Nienow, one of the organizers, asked a startled man who answered the door at his ranch-style home in March. “Can we count on you to vote ‘no’ on the transit plan?”

In cities and counties across the country — including Little Rock, Ark.; Phoenix, Ariz.; southeast Michigan; central Utah; and here in Tennessee — the Koch brothers are fueling a fight against public transit, an offshoot of their longstanding national crusade for lower taxes and smaller government.

At the heart of their effort is a network of activists who use a sophisticated data service built by the Kochs, called i360, that helps them identify and rally voters who are inclined to their worldview. It is a particularly powerful version of the technologies used by major political parties.
