Greenpeace escort protests world's first purpose-built floating nuclear power plant

Amsterdam, Netherlands – As the ‘Akademik Lomonosov’, a floating nuclear power plant built in St. Petersburg, today entered Danish waters on its journey to Murmansk, it was met by Greenpeace activists forming a peaceful escort, and demanding stricter regulatory measures.

Speaking from aboard the Beluga II, a Greenpeace ship sailing alongside the Russian nuclear plant, Jan Haverkamp, a nuclear expert for Greenpeace Central and Eastern Europe, said:

“This power plant basically moves the threat of a nuclear catastrophe into fragile Arctic waters. With its flat-bottomed hull and lack of self-propulsion it’s like balancing a nuclear power plant on a wooden palette and setting it adrift in some of the world’s roughest waters.”

Russian-built nuclear icebreakers and submarines have an incident-ridden history, which, according to Jan Haverkamp, should cause alarm among nuclear regulators.

“We are urging the international community to demand from Russia a full and independent assessment and oversight of the transport, testing and operation of this floating nuclear power plant, especially considering Rosatom’s ambitions of mass producing these sci-fi fantasy floating disasters,” said Haverkamp.

New York City's Crumbling 'Island of The Dead' Is Unearthing Its Nameless Skeletons

1 million souls who can't stay buried.

It's the largest mass burial site in the US, but for an estimated 1 million souls interred at New York City's 'Island of the Dead', their eternal resting place is disintegrating.

Hart Island in the Bronx, said to be the largest taxpayer-funded cemetery in the world, is crumbling in the face of longstanding erosion, and as the ground gives way, the buried remains of New York's unidentified poor are becoming exposed.

"Skeletal remains are literally just coming out of the earth," the director of non-profit Hart Island Project, Melinda Hunt, told CBS.

"Entire skeletons are sort of falling out of the hill onto the beach, and then they're washed away with the tide."

Hunt's organisation says the affected area – informally known as 'Bones Beach' – has been eroding for decades due to storms and severe weather, and after years of mismanagement by NYC's Department of Correction, which controls the site, the inevitable unearthing of human remains has reached a crisis point.

North Korea says denuclearization pledge not result of U.S.-led sanctions

Source: Reuters

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Sunday its intention to denuclearize, unveiled at a historic inter-Korean summit, was not the result of U.S.-led sanctions and pressure, warning the United States not to mislead public opinion.

Impoverished North Korea has been hit by a series of U.N. and U.S. sanctions in recent years in a bid to rein in its nuclear and missile programs.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in vowed “complete denuclearization” of the Korean peninsula in the first inter-Korean summit in more than a decade on April 27, but the declaration did not include concrete steps to reach that goal.

The North’s official KCNA news agency said Washington was “misleading public opinion” by claiming the denuclearization pledge was the result of sanctions and other pressure.
