Tougher climate policies could save a stunning 150 million lives, researchers find

There is an overlooked benefit to greatly lowering carbon emissions worldwide, a new study says. In addition to preserving Arctic sea ice, reducing sea-level rise and alleviating other effects of global warming, it would probably save more than 150 million human lives.

According to the study, premature deaths would fall on nearly every continent if the world’s governments agree to cut emissions of carbon and other harmful gases enough to limit global temperature rise to less than 3 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century. That is about a degree lower than the target set by the Paris climate agreement.

The benefit would be felt mostly in Asian countries with dirty air — 13 million lives would be saved in large cities in India alone, including the metropolitan areas of Kolkata, Delhi, Patna and Kanpur. Greater Dhaka in Bangladesh would have 3.6 million fewer deaths, and Jakarta in Indonesia would record 1.6 fewer lives lost. The African cities of Lagos and Cairo combined would register more than 2 million fewer deaths.

In the United States, the Clean Air Act has improved air quality over the years. Still, more than 330,000 lives in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Detroit, Atlanta and Washington would be spared, according to the study, published Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change.

“Americans don’t really grasp how pollution impacts their lives,” said Drew Shindell, a professor of Earth science at Duke University and the study’s lead author. “You say, ‘My uncle went to the hospital and died of a heart attack.’ You don’t say the heart attack was caused by air pollution, so we don’t know. It’s still a big killer here. It’s much bigger than from people who die from plane crashes or war or terrorism, but we don’t see the link so clearly.”

More sinkholes? Permian Basin buckling under stress of oil and gas drilling, study says

Oil and natural gas drilling is causing the West Texas landscape to buckle even more than previously realized, according to researchers from Southern Methodist University.

The same team previously investigated two giant sinkholes — which have become semi-famous —near the town of Wink, about 70 miles west of Midland. The new study in the journal Scientific Reports published by Nature.com, found at least a half-dozen more large swaths of the Permian Basin where land is sinking or rising.

"These hazards represent a danger to residents, roads, railroads, levees, dams, and oil and gas pipelines, as well as potential pollution of groundwater," said SMU geophysicist Zhong Lu, in a written statement. "Proactive, continuous detailed monitoring from space is critical to secure the safety of people and property."

Some of the land they studied moved as much as 40 inches during a 2 1/2-year period, according to researchers.

A 2017 Texas Tribune story reported that an abandoned Pecos County oil well caused officials to spend more than $1 million in road repairs. The story quoted local officials as saying that rerouting the affected Farm-to-Market Road could push the cost to $15 million.

16-year-old victim of Maryland school shooting to be taken off life support, family says

Source: The Baltimore Sun

Speaking in a hushed hospital lobby, the parents of the 16-year-old girl wounded in the school shooting at Great Mills High School in Southern Maryland said they would take her off life support Thursday evening.

Jaelynn Willey was left brain-dead after a 17-year-old boy shot her in the head Tuesday morning, said her mother, Melissa Willey.

"As of now Jaelynn is still on life support but she will not make it," Willey said. "She is brain dead and has nothing, no life, left in her."

Willey spoke to reporters at the University of Maryland Prince George's Hospital Center, where Jaelynn is being treated. She held Jaelynn's youngest sibling, who babbled as she shared the news, and her husband, Daniel, stood by her side.
