Scary! Mahalo for all this
detailed important Hurricane Lane information from NHC!
The article I linked to says Lane is.. "angular"!..
"While the storm has gained strength over the past day and its winds are only 7 mph shy of Category 5 strength, the hurricane center predicts it will begin slowly weakening over the next 24 hours due to increasing wind shear, which would disrupt thunderstorm development.
However, the storm has attained an annular structure, meaning its large eye is surrounded by a single, uniform ring of thunderstorms. Just 4% of hurricanes and typhoons are annular, and they are known for their staying power, weakening more slowly under unfavorable conditions compared with conventional storms."
Wow.. I might have known you'd be in the know about
Hurricane Lane! I went to get water from the H2O machine in front of ACE this evening and lots of Peeps were waiting at the Propane station and the Water Machine to fill 'er up. I wasn't even thinking about the Hurricane.. it was just time for me to get more water. I got a sick feeling.. once you've been through one Cat 4 Hurricane.. it will do that to you.
The last I had heard via a text from my son was that it was going close to the Big Island and when I googled.. Kauai wasn't in the running. Well, that changed.. evidently and the headline is.. "Lane Is Closing In".. perhaps by Thursday. We all sure as hell hope it passes all our Islands.
Now up the a Cat 5!
Hurricane Lane, upgraded to Category 5 late Tuesday, is expected to make a dangerously close encounter with the Hawaiian Islands over the next several days.
Although it is not certain whether the storm, packing peak winds of 160 mph, will directly strike the islands or just graze them, significant effects from rain, wind and waves are becoming increasingly likely
On Tuesday morning, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, based in Honolulu, posted hurricane watches for the eastern Hawaiian Islands, including the Big Island and Maui, which could be affected by tropical storm-force winds and heavy rain as soon as Wednesday. Watches may be extended to the western islands, the hurricane center said.
The storm could potentially bring "damaging winds and life-threatening flash flooding from heavy rainfall" to the islands, the hurricane center warned. "As Lane is expected to be slow-moving as it nears the islands, it will produce large and damaging surf, mainly along exposed south and west facing shores," it added..
More interesting details in the article.. especially if Lane could possibly hit your Island.. or any or the Islands! http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-hawaii-hurricane-lane-20180821-story.html#
