Practical politics and Democrats - We've got some strengths and we've got some weaknesses

I found this column by Chris Satullo, who has some serious progressive credentials, and has been seeking to build consensus between diverse groups.

He said this about where we are today -

Early this week, just before he hopped aboard his Marine One chopper, Joe Biden talked to a press gaggle about the debt ceiling deal he’d struck with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy......

snip:

“Look, one of the things that I hear some of you guys saying is, ‘Why doesn’t Biden say what a good deal it is?’ Why would Biden say what a good deal it is before the vote? You think that’s going to help me get it passed? No. That’s why you guys don’t bargain very well…You guys, you realize you’re not in the real world?”

Biden was gently mocking the media reps, who deserved it. But he could just as easily have said all that about the progressive wing of his party.

Satullo goes on to suggest that we take four things as being self-evident truths - and then breaks down why we should reconsider them and deal with changing our approach.

1. Twitter is an accurate mirror of America.
2. “People of color” will soon become a cohesive and stable political majority.
3. No. 2 is a good thing, because progressives are good while the other side is evil and must be stopped.
4. Thus, compromise is always wrong. It is a sign of weakness and fuzzy old thinking.

LaSalle Is Rejected by New York Senate Panel in a 10-9 Vote

Source: New York Times

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s choice of Justice Hector LaSalle to become the state’s top judge caused an intraparty Democratic battle that divided a judicial hearing on Wednesday.

ALBANY, N.Y. — Gov. Kathy Hochul’s embattled nominee to become New York State’s top judge was rejected on Wednesday, an unprecedented repudiation that underscored a deep division among Democrats on the direction of the state’s judicial system.

After a combative hourslong hearing, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 10-9 against the nomination of Justice Hector D. LaSalle, whose nomination was strongly opposed by progressives who saw him as too conservative.

The committee’s rejection — the first time that New York lawmakers have voted against a governor’s choice for chief judge — laid bare how vulnerable Ms. Hochul, a Buffalo-area Democrat, may be to a challenge from her own party. All 10 senators who voted against the judge were Democrats; two Democrats voted in favor of Justice LaSalle, while one Democrat and all six Republicans on the committee voted in favor “without recommendation.”

We were at a Democrats Abroad meeting last night and one of the organizers was wearing the pin above. His mom in Louisiana gave it to him at Christmas, and he brought it back to France.

She bought it from DissentPins.com, who sell all sorts of great stuff.
