Former US Senator, Lillington native Robert Morgan dies

On a cold December morning in 1974 when Morgan showed up to the Russell Senate Office Building in the nation's capital, he met a young Don Vaughan with a handshake. Vaughan, who was looking for a job, was hoping to make a good impression on the new senator.
"About an hour later, I was a member of the United States Senate staff," Vaughan said in a phone call on Saturday.
Vaughan added: "I was the luckiest guy in the world."

Morgan died on Saturday. He was 90 years old.
“Ann and I want to express our deepest sympathies to the family of Robert Morgan," Gov. Pat McCrory said. "His years of service to the state of North Carolina as a state senator, Attorney General, United States Senator and Director of the State Bureau of Investigation will be remembered for his devotion and love for his native state. Man hits tree and crashes car while playing 'Pokemon Go'
Auburn, N.Y. (FOX 11) - A 28-year-old man was distracted while playing the GPS based game 'Pokemon Go' on his phone. He drove his car off the road and crashed into a tree, police said.
Luckily the man wasn't seriously injured, but the front end of his car was totaled.
The Auburn, N.Y. Police Department released the following statement:
'With the sudden popularity of the recently released mobile phone application/game called “Pokemon Go” the Auburn Police Department would like to remind the public using common sense when playing the game should be paramount above everything else.'

World War II Hero Dr. Roscoe C. Brown Dies at 94 (Tuskegee Airman)
Dr. Roscoe C. Brown Jr., the New York City veteran who flew with the legendary Tuskegee Airmen in World War II, has died at the age of 94.
Brown flew 68 combat missions for the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American pilots in U.S. history. A nine-time New York City Marathon runner and lifelong Jets and Mets fan, he told NBC 4 New York in May: "Fighter pilots are like athletes. And I was a pretty good pilot."
Brown, who held a Ph.D. in education, also served 17 years as president of Bronx Community College. There, he led outreach to the city's economic and educational institutions through business partnerships and developed new programs in health, technology and human services, according to a statement from CUNY Chancellor James B. Milliken.
Brown later joined the CUNY Graduate Center as professor and director of the Center for Urban Education Policy. He also hosted "African American Legends," a public affairs show on CUNY TV.

Holocaust survivor, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, prolific author and outspoken activist Elie Wiesel died Saturday at the age of 87. Wiesel was perhaps best known for his major role in promoting Holocaust education, and for perpetuating the memory of the Holocaust in the post-World War II era with his memoir “Night,” based on his experience as a teenager in the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Eliezer “Elie” Wiesel was born on September 30, 1928 in the Romanian town of Sighet, to Sarah and Shlomo Wiesel. His maternal grandfather, Dodye Feig, was a member of the Vishnitz Hasidic sect; his strong influence over Wiesel was seen later in some of his writings. Wiesel received a traditional religious education while growing up in Sighet; many years later, in 2002, he returned to his hometown to dedicate the Elie Weisel Memorial House at the site of his childhood home.
The Wiesel family’s lives were seriously disrupted in 1940, when Hungary annexed Sighet and all the Jews in town were forced to move into one of two ghettoes. In May 1944, the Nazis, with Hungary’s agreement, deported the Jewish community of Sighet to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The teenage Wiesel was sent with his father Shlomo to the Buna Werke labor camp, a sub-camp of Auschwitz III-Monowitz, where they were forced to work for eight months before being transferred to a series of other concentration camps near the war’s end.
