Most struggles are between bullies. Bully A wants to control/defeat Bully B.
The US stands aside while choosing which Bully to back.. A or B?..B or A?....or perhaps Bully C, who's just waiting in the wings to jump into the fight.
No matter WHICH one we choose to back, the end result is usually the same.
Whichever Bully "wins", will just be "winning" the right to "kill the peasants", and then to spit in our faces because we don't really want them to kill the peasants.
We have NEVER been able to successfully impose "democracy" on a country. We have only been able to prop up dictators here and there, for a while, and then "buy" their compliance for as long as they survive in office.
Bullets, bombs & bullies do NOT change hearts and minds or philosophies of people being stifled.
Tribal/religious beliefs ALWAYS "win out" when they can achieve power through force.
Imposed boundaries and suppressed beliefs are only effective for a while, and bully-choosers cannot overcome them.. (see : Iran-Iraq-Afghanistan-Yugoslavia-VietNam, etc).
Where we are willing to maintain a bellicose military presence, we can hold the lid on (Korea)... are we willing to do that anymore? (N.Korea is somewhat of a paper-tiger, not religious zealots willing to blow up people in buses)
Foreign policy, as we have practiced, needs to change...and change big-time.

The new timeslot for Hardball is probably better for East Coasters, but only if people have not turned off their set after Bashir-Shultz..
Lots of people don't remember, but Hardball was in danger of being canceled...and then we had the election of 2000, which put his show back on track, since there was not much of a lineup back then.
In his new time slot, he'll be the last yakker of the day (before the more true news shows), and by the time he's up, everyone else has talked the stories of the day to death by the time he's on..

Let's say that Barbara Jones moves to NC ..she gets a job, and couch surfs at a friend's place..
She registers to vote because she lives there....right??
Okay..fast forward a few months and she's lost her job & decides that she likes NC. She decides to go to college there to perk up her skills for a better job. Her financial aid allows her to live at a dorm (great news to her friend)..
Does she now NOT "live there"?
Anyone who moves anywhere, cannot know what the future holds for them, or how long they will live there.. When you make a commitment to live in a different place, you have MOVED there. You might or might not decide to drive a vehicle or to register to vote, but while you are LIVING there...buying food, going to the bank, to the movies, to the malls, you ARE a resident, and you do LIVE THERE..
Will you ALWAYS live there? Will you live there for 10 weeks? 2 years? 30 years? Who knows?.. What matters is that you are living there NOW.
A college dorm is just an apartment building within a campus, and the rent is paid to the college, but it is paid to an entity that resides within a community within a state.
It should not be up to a "board of elections" to decide whether or not one is a resident..especially when it's obvious that they DO live there if they live on-campus.
A contrary conclusion could be arrived at if the student actually lived at home (in a nearby state) and crossed state borders as a day-student...returning home to sleep at the family home.
Local community curmudgeons may bristle at "outsiders" voting in their local elections, or diluting their votes in national elections, but they sure don't mind when those kids plunk down money in the local stores.

Antipsychotics have already been linked to type II diabetes in adults. Now a new study shows a connection between these medications and the chronic medical condition in kids as well. Researchers report in the journal JAMA Psychiatry that children taking antipsychotics have three times the risk of developing type II diabetes, compared to children taking other psychotropic medications (drugs prescribed to treat mental disorders). The study authors were surprised by the magnitude of the results. But the findings make sense, given that the side effects of antipsychotics include weight gain and insulin resistance, said Wayne A. Ray, study co-author and researcher in the Department of Preventive Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. However, the study shows an association, not a cause-effect relationship. It's not uncommon for an adult taking antipsychotic medications to gain 20 to 40 pounds in a relatively short period of time, Ray said. Similar weight gain effects have been observed in children, proportionate to their body sizes.

Antipsychotics are prescribed to some children with attention and conduct disorders because these medications are potent tranquilizers, and can reduce the occurrence of some types of behavior problems such as aggressiveness, Ray said. But all of these mental conditions have other therapeutic options, and antipsychotics are often a secondary or off-label choice, the study said.

Researchers examined the medical records of patients between the ages of 6 and 24 who were enrolled in the Tennessee Medicaid program. The sample size was large: There were 28,858 participants who had recently started taking antipsychotic drugs, and 14,429 in the control group who had recently begun a different psychotropic medication. The most common diagnoses in the study group were ADHD and other problems of conduct, Ray said. Other conditions for which antipsychotics were prescribed included depression and bipolar disorders.

Study authors found a three-fold increased risk of type II diabetes in the patients taking antipsychotics, compared to those who were taking other psychotropic drugs. The risk was found particularly in children ages 6 to 17.. Researchers observed this association between antipsychotics and diabetes within one year of follow-up. "We typically think of type II diabetes as a disease that takes a long time to develop, but what our finding implies is that even rather short-term use of these drugs in children and youth might not be safe with regard to diabetes," Ray said. The total amount of antipsychotics patients took during the study period affected their risk of developing type II diabetes as well, researchers found; the higher the cumulative dose, the higher the risk. And for up to a year after participants stopped using antipsychotics, the risk remained heightened.

This study did not examine patients who had type II diabetes and whether the condition could be reversed, but Ray said there could be diabetes cases among users of psychotropic drugs in which it becomes a lifetime chronic disease. "Before you’re going to expose a child to a medication that has many dangers –- not just the one we’ve uncovered, but many others –- you should think carefully about alternatives," Ray said. "My opinion is that only after you've tried those other things, should you then think about antipsychotics."

Just about every poll on Obamacare will show you the same thing: There’s a huge partisan split on the health care law. Most Democrats support it, most Republicans oppose it and independents fall somewhere in the middle.
That partisan divide, however, hasn’t necessarily translated into how Americans use the law. A new poll finds that young Republicans are more likely to have health coverage through their parents’ policy than young Democrats, an option widely expanded under the Affordable Care Act.
The poll comes from the Commonwealth Foundation, which has spent two years tracking how adults between the ages of 19 and 25 are reacting to the Affordable Care Act. Beginning in 2010, the health care law allowed young adults up to age 26 to stay covered under their parents’ health plans.
The Commonwealth Foundation estimates that of the 15 million young adults that have insurance coverage through a parent, 7.8 million would not have qualified without this policy.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Cayman Islands says it has reached agreement with the United States to provide information on accounts held by American citizens to comply with a sweeping U.S. law designed to combat tax evasion. The British Caribbean territory, considered the world’s sixth largest financial center and a major haven for mutual funds and private equity, said the texts of the new pacts will be made public once an official signing ceremony is held.

The Cayman government said the pacts are tied to a U.S. law called the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, which was enacted in 2010 and expected to take effect next year. The law targets non-tax compliance by U.S. citizens with foreign accounts around the globe, and Washington is pressing nations to provide client data.
Financial Services Minister Wayne Panton said in a Tuesday statement that the agreements illustrate the tiny three-island territory’s “commitment to engage in globally accepted tax and transparency initiatives.” The islands plan further talks with Britain’s government to finalize terms of a similar information-sharing arrangement for British citizens. There is nothing illegal about U.S. citizens opening bank accounts and trusts in places like the Cayman Islands or Switzerland, but some people illegally use them to hide money and avoid taxes at home.
Such overseas accounts have come under a crush of scrutiny in recent years, and offshore financial centers like the Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands have scrambled to sign new international tax treaties and defend their financial sectors. Zero direct taxation and friendly regulations have helped the Cayman Islands lure global money in recent decades and dramatically transform its economy from one based on seafaring, fishing and rope making to one built on financial services and tourism.
