I saw something sad the other night

Craftygal is incontinent and wears adult briefs. I knew we were getting low but I came down with the flu (update: turned out to be COVID) and was pretty much out of it and didn't realize we'd run out. I was in no condition to run out for more so I signed up for a delivery service and ordered two cases from Walmart.

Quick as a bunny I got notification that someone was in the store shiopping, then they were on their way, then they pulled up. Turned out to be a woman with a child in a car seat. I made a point of way over tipping.

I put no blame on her. I just have visions of her camped out in the Walmart parking lot waiting for her app to chime for her next gig.

Is this what the "gig economy" has brought us to?

What the hell is going on down there with home-grown terrorist attacks on infrastructure?

https://www.thedailybeast.com/neo-nazis-brandon-russell-sarah-clendaniel-arrested-for-plot-to-blow-up-baltimore-power-grid

I grew up in Niagara Falls, Ontario. There's a huge hydroelectric power station. There's powerlines and transformers and shit all over the place. The one time there was an "attack" something broke and caused a huge power outage but it was fixed in a couple of hours. The only outcome was a tiny blip in the birth rate 9 months later.

I now live in Alberta. There's pipelines and refineries everywhere. I'm looking at one right now. The only incidents I can remember are vandals taking potshots at rural pipelines but the leak is discovered almost immediately and it's cleaned up in a couple of days.

We have a Native population who gets understandably upset over some issues but their big thing is blockades that causes a certain amount of havoc but they're reasonable about it and let emergency vehicles through but they sit there playing drums and the RCMP sits there looking bored and the politicians sort it out and everybody goes home.

I look South and go

With cradle to grave health insurance there's no such thing as a pre-existing condition

Was just listening to Smerconish (replay) on SiriusXM POTUS and one of the callers brought up ACA.

Here's the thing...when Craftygal was a teenager in British Columbia something happened (they're still not sure what) and she lost one of her kidneys. She was told that possibly, eventually she might end up on dialysis or need a transplant but for the moment she could toddle along on one kidney.

Jump forward a couple of decades, she moves to Alberta (different health card system but she's automatically enrolled), bad things happen and she's now on dialysis, and is not a good candidate for transplant. She takes DATS (city funded but you pay a bus ticket), there's also in-home workers and Blue Cross pays all her meds except co-pay and the expensive stuff is covered on a grant.

In a different system, as soon as she moved Provinces she'd be a "pre-existing condition" and I'd be bankrupt and/or she'd be dead.

If not McCarthy, whom?

He cannot seem to get the magic number of votes to get the Speaker position especially with Marjorie Taylor Greene getting involved.

There seems to be no viable second choice and there's talk if reaching across the aisle. Is there a Democratic Party member acceptable to enough people to carry the day?

Ok would you people PLEASE get your election shit together

I know I post this every two years, but still...

I'm a former employee of Elections Canada. I've worked for Federal and Provincial campaigns is a variety of positions. I'm best known as "the guy with the truck" for lugging huge campaign signs around. I'm also active at the polls.

Canada doesn't have mail in or online voting. It does have convenient early voting. There's lots of polls, they're in driving distance and on major bus routes and if you need a ride you can phone the campaign office and somebody will take you.

There's a great long list of acceptable ID including dragging your neighbour in to swear you in. Hence, ballots are pre-sorted. Unless you spoil your ballot, if it's in the box, it's valid.

On election day, the head pool person drives over and picks up a kit for each polling station. It easily fits in the trunk of a car. There are signs, cardboard ballot boxes, cardboard voting shields, bags, sticky tape and folders of valid voters. As a voter comes in they are checked off the list (as above there are ways of dealing with exceptions), given a cute little paper ballot, they vote behind one of the little cardboard partitions then put it in the ballot box.

End of the night, the boxes are opened and counted in front of scrutineers from each Party (assuming they show up), results are totted up, phoned into the central office (scrutineers phone their campaign offices), everything gets sealed in sticky tape, boxed up and returned to central office and everybody's home by 11 pm to watch the results on yhe news.

It's coming up on a week and you STILL dont have results for House OR Senate???!!!??

The right wing is dipping deep into the Thesaurus to describe the election

Debacle
Disaster
Horrific
Horrible
Outrageous

What else have you heard?

Why is nobody talking about the RINOs?

Assuming the Repugs take the House it's going to be by a slim majority. The RINOs are from districts where MAGAts are not a factor. If an attempt is made to do anything monumentally stupid, the Speaker won't have the votes.

I think Putin is planning on nuking Kherson

He's evacuating his people. It would send a message to NATO. It's far enough East that prevailing winds would take fallout away from Russia. The residual radiation would prevent further Ukrainian incursion.
