Inslee: The climate crisis gains traction, his candidacy doesn't

The latest petty attack on Gov. Jay Inslee from our state's Republican Party is an allegation that he has exaggerated the declaration of Washington's climate emergency in order to boost a lagging presidential bid.

What planet do these people live on? We are already experiencing sunsets enhanced by smoke from Canadian wildfires. An outdoor burn ban has just been declared, including rain forests of Vancouver Island. South of the 49th Parallel, the 6,200-foot summit of Mount Townsend is already free of snow.

The party of Theodore Roosevelt, degraded to the party of Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump, spooks at climate science. In this state, it lined up against legislative initiatives, e.g. clean power, coal-free energy, that Inslee is now taking to the country.

I can never stop chuckling at Inslee hyperbole, or his consultant-written money appeals that suggest the sheriff is at the door holding an eviction notice.

Undeniably, however, the Big Guy is, in a favorite Ronald Reagan phrase, a conviction politician. He may not be pushing numbers in the polls, but he is pushing a sense of urgency about a warming, melting, burning, flooding Earth.
