Sanders is the top choice of men (38%), women (28%) and Latinos (53%). Among voters younger than 45, he is the overwhelming pick at 53%. He is tied with Biden at 18% among voters 45 and older.
Sanders is seen as the candidate with the best chance of defeating President Trump, at 34%. He is followed by Biden and Bloomberg, both at 16%.
It’s a sharp reversal from the institute’s previous state poll. In January, 46% liked Biden’s chances against Trump, compared with 25% for Sanders and 10% for Warren.
The new California numbers echo the top figures in a national NPR/PBS/Marist poll released Tuesday. It found Sanders moving on top at 31%, followed by Bloomberg (19%), Biden (15%), Warren (12%), Klobuchar (9%) and Buttigieg (8%).
