Excerpt:

ARTURO VARGAS: Now we're asking this question of all the candidates because of how important this issue is to the Latino community and to our organization in particular. Next year, the country will experience a constitutionally required, this annual census. Under circumstances and policies that researchers, practitioners, and federal courts have said will result in an undercount, especially of Latinos. Now if you're elected president, the census will have already occurred. But what will you do to remedy the 2020 count and how will you restore credibility and integrity to the census?

BERNIE SANDERS: Well, I think for a start, even before we worry about what I do after I'm president, we should talk about what might be able to be done in the next several months. And that is the Congress has the ability to pass language which says, "We will not fund something unless something is eliminated." And I've done that over the years.

And I think it was a damn good idea to say that we're not gonna fund money for the census unless that absolutely bigoted language is taken out of the census. (APPLAUSE) So I think we might wanna jump in before. And second, I think as others have stated, I think if, as you indicate, and I believe would be the case, there would be a significant undercount, which means that minority communities would have-- less representation in Congress. Those communities would get less federal money. I think we would look about the possibility, the constitutionality of in fact doing a recount.
