https://thinkprogress.org/fox-news-host-brian-kilmeade-doesnt-understand-how-unions-work-joe-biden-international-association-firefighters-d8145e64b868/In a Monday morning interview with the unions general president, Harold Schaitberger, Kilmeade repeatedly demanded to know why the mandatory union dues for the many of those firefighters who actually support President Donald Trump would be used to elect a candidate they oppose.
Schaitberger explained that the groups voluntary political action committee donations, not its union dues, would be used for political spending but Kilmeade would not relent.
-snip-
If someone calls you, if one of your members calls you today and says, Do not use my dues to support Joe Biden, what will you do? he demanded.
I will say that our political resources are those that come from our members who voluntarily contribute to our political operations, Schaitberger calmly replied. Not your dues.

(58,785 posts)but other Republicans in 2016 after ODing on too much equality. Sure, Fox is angry at this rejection only halfway through. The midterms were a really bad sign, and this is also!
Apparently, after weakly coming through and supporting a black Democrat for president twice, asking the IAFF's overwhelmingly white male members to vote for a woman was the last straw, or as Schaitberger and the media put put it, Democrats failed to "connect" with them.
But they see white, male Vice President Biden as someone they can trust, and rightly so as a liberal, middle class upbringing, lifelong union supporter, defender of working people.
That was Hillary too, but...oh, well. That was 2016. We're working on 2020.

(3,205 posts)My wife was a delegate to the 2004 Democratic convention. The IAFF was all in for Kerry and the convention was full of firefighters. Really a bunch of great democrats, aside from being slightly racist and horribly misogynistic. lol

(58,785 posts)Hardly the only ones in our big tent. We even have running for president a couple of the house's #FiveWhiteMen whose sole claim to distinction is trying to kick our nation's highest ranking woman out of party leadership because she's a woman -- none of the 5 others, who were men, just her.
Well, now our national house is on fire and it's looking like most will answer the call this time. Depending.
Nevertheless, it's a very positive sign. I'm tacking it up on my mental board under the midterms.

Btw, any Fox teeth-grinding about the union declining to endorse Senator Sanders? They went very heavily for Trump in the 2016 general, but before that in the binary, alternative-to-her primary Sanders drew more.

(16,898 posts)There would be drives to raise money for seperate PACs. This was all voluntary. There would also be a raffle involved to win one of the Ford Trucks made by UAW workers at the once St. Paul plant. Thousands were raised that helped candidates who supported Union workers. No dues went to candidates.
