Bernie has a rough time at She the People conference

Bernie Sanders was asked by a woman of color in the audience what he would do about the rise of white supremacist violence as President.

Instead he started talking about minimum wage and Medicare For All.

The audience claps when the moderator clocks him.

After getting called out for dodging specific questions about minorities, Bernie reminds the audience he "marched with MLK".

Audible groans/boos.

He wags his finger at them.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:

42. Selma is not included in histories of Sanders' early political career
Wed Apr 24, 2019, 07:05 PM
Apr 2019
Perhaps most important is that Sanders himself has not discussed participating in a 1965 march led by Dr. King. In June 2015 Sanders penned piece entitled “Youth Unemployment and Dr. King’s Dream” in which he confirms that he attended the 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington. In this essay, which spans nearly 800 words, Sanders does not mention Selma at all.

Biographies which focus on Sanders’ life in the 1960s note that he moved to Vermont immediately after graduating from college in June 1964. He and his wife much of the next two years traveling Europe before their divorce in 1966. These biographies do not mention a trip to Alabama in 1965.

Notable early events in Sanders’ political career include his arrest during a demonstration against segregation in Chicago’s public schools in 1963, and a civil rights sit-in at the University of Chicago in 1962. Once again, a 1965 march in Selma is not included in histories of Sanders’ early political career.

In March 2015, Sanders announced that he would attend the 50th anniversary of the Selma march – and did not mention that he had attended the original event himself. At the event, his speech also failed to mention that he was there at the historic march.

200. 'Challenging' questions like "What would you do about White power groups?"
Thu Apr 25, 2019, 07:44 AM
Apr 2019

That should be not be in the least bit 'challenging' for a POTUS CANDIDATE who claims the mantle of longtime civil rights activist.

And if you don't know the questions that the other candidates were asked, you can find the answer yourself right here:

Let us know which questions were asked of Bernie that were not asked of other candidates.

"I marched with MLK" is an answer my mother and father could have given. It's a politician's non-answer, and the audience let him know it.

Off the top of my head, I myself could have said:

1. Restore the Homeland Security Domestic Terrorism Investigation Unit that Trump disbanded. Fund their investigative and data collection activities fully.

2. Encourage the DOJ to expand the label of terrorism to include violent white power nationalists, without adopting new terrorism 'charges' that could be abused and used against peacful protesters, environmental activist and BLM leaders. For instance, prosecutors labeled Hasson, the Coast Guard lieutenant, a potential “domestic terrorist,” even though they charged him with firearms and drug possession charges. Thus, government officials can extend the moral stigma of terrorism—often reserved for Muslims—to other perpetrators without new laws.

2. Use the bully pulpit of the Oval Office as a white man to call other white men and women that perpetrate or tacitly approve of these terrorists with their silence to speak out against it. Call for houses of worship to actively reject racism, sexism, homophobia, and all manner of bigotry in their communities that stokes this violence.

If I could come up with that, why couldn't his staff? Did he really think that he could just dismiss preparation on the topic of organized violence against people of color, that he HAD TO KNOW would be brought up, by planning instead to just turn on auto pilot talking points about DACA and health care policy?

This wasn't a town hall where questions would be submitted and approved beforehand. It appears that he doesn't have the ability to listen or access information on topics that he's not interested in or versed on when asked.

I think about how Hillary would have first smiled, thanked the audience member for giving her the opportunity to discuss this important issue, talked about the extent of the problem of expanding white nationalism, the damage that it has caused, and then listed her solutions. She was often called "over prepared" but you knew that she would have respected this audience enough to have done some damn homework on this. She cares about the issue.

+1000, and you are so right about Secretary Clinton. The way she approached questions is a huge reason for the enthusiasm she engendered in her audiences.

In fact, those who did best at this event were those who saw it as an opportunity to talk about the issues raised by this bedrock group in the Democratic party. If a candidate hasn't realized that Black women are THE group you need to win to win the Democratic Party primary, I have to question whether the candidate knows the party at all. 'Vote blue, no matter who' should be replaced with 'Vote like a Black woman', because they were the group that most clearly rejected Trump and all third party candidates; 94% of them voted for the Democratic nominee in the last GE.

to know about and be informed on the issues that women of color are interested in.

At a conference for women of color.

Therefore questions on those issues were "gotcha" questions, or "exceptionally challenging."

And they have the nerve to come white bro-splain to us how Bernie is being unfairly criticized for not knowing things that they themselved don't know, so those things can't possibly be relevant or important.

That being said using this experience to deflect questions regarding our current socio-cultural issues regarding race is a weak response. The march was 57 years ago and while it remains an extremely important part of our history regarding civil rights, stating he marched does little to explain how he intends to address systemic racism and inequality.

I'm also looking to support a candidate with the stamina, alertness and demeanor to be the leader of the free world. There's a delicate BALANCE of traits that are important to me. It's not enough to simply be able to point out problems... anyone can do that... I want someone who can articulate their understanding of the problem, how it came to be, what its real-world impacts are, and what a REAL WORLD solution would be... including how it gets passed, and how it's paid for.

For me, BS just misses the mark on all of those counts. I'll be supporting someone else.

leaving all that noisy activism in the racially diverse cities far behind.

He took a trip to Europe during the height of the Vietnam war protests, so he missed that, too.

I think that he hasn't really had to deal with these issues in Vermont. That's how he got elected and re-elected, because the people didn't particularly have an interest in issues that affect diverse areas.

And even last December, he still really wasn't getting the message.

But he broadly answered it.

I don't know of anything specifically you can do to alter people's thinking, except to make it clear what's acceptable in our society and what our country stands for.

They wanted to hear something certain, I guess. What that was, I don't know.

I thought the answer was fine. I didn't have any expectations of the answer, and I don't think that there is anything in particular a person can do to change the mind of someone else. You lead by example and by encouraging certain behavior, as we have seen in triplicate from Trump. So Sanders explained how he'd appeal to everyone, which speaks particularly to disadvantaged people but also to others. That encourages unity. That's the way to do it, he seems to suggest.

I'm not a Sanders supporter. But I thought the answer was real, and was fine.

Yes, they wanted to hear an answer to what he would DO about growing violence from White supremacist groups, and not a brush off, from someone who didn't want to talk about it, or couldn't.

His answer was "real" but it wasn't an answer to the question being asked.

One basic, easy, no brainer answer would have been. "I will restore and fully fund the Homeland Security Domestic Terrorism unit that Trump disbanded."

That's a bit more concrete than "leading by example" don't you think?

Why do you think that he couldn't have even said that? He clearly either didn't want to answer the question or couldn't, so he rambled on about something that did not address white supremacy and their growing violence at all.

He failed to answer the question, and clearly hadn't done even a small bit of research on a topic that anyone could predict would be asked about.

Blaming the crowd for informing him that he had not answered the question doesn't show much respect for the audience.

that Sanders was there to communicate with.

The fact that some white Sanders supporters deemed them wrong, that his non-answer as 'fine,' and insinuated that the judgement of the women of color who were there were somehow "less" or "as" reasonable as judgement of white Sanders supporters as to whether their question was answered is telling.

https://everydayfeminism.com/2016/02/how-people-whitesplain-racism/

Why do you think that Sanders couldn't even give that one answer I was able to think of off the top of my head? Do you think that Sanders didn't even know that Trump had disbanded the DHS Domestic Terrorism Unit? Do you think he forgot?

He had a chance to show that he cared even just enough about White Supremacy to talk about the banishing of that group, which is the main investigative unit that finds and arrests violent white supremacists before they can kill again.

Why do you think he failed to do so?

This turns off a person who is asking a specific question and the audience as well.

If you go to a car dealership and ask "how much mileage do you get on this car?" and the salesman answers, "it gives great mileage but look at the sleek interior, rack and pinion steering, double wishbone suspension, antilock breaking system, Dolby stereo system, rear seat video and Bluetooth connectivity."

Just because neither you nor Bernie doesn't know about an issue, doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. That's privilege, defined.

There are many things specifically that can be done to address white power domestic terrorism, other than platitudes about how "everyone needs to be equal," and "I marched with MLK." My parents can say both those things, but they're not presidential material.

Here are some examples:

Does he not listen to the WOC he has very publicly touted that he hire to be on his staff? They should have been briefing him on speaking to a group of WOC. Did they, and did he just not remember anything they told him?

Okay. That made me laugh.

I think one of the problems Sanders has in his 2020 run is he sounds exactly the way he did in 2016--same vague answers and/or talking around the questions. It's not as if the Senator from Vermont hasn't had time to prepare for a second go-around. But really, not to be able to answer something as obvious as white nationalism after all the incidents we seen blasted in the press is frankly, unforgivable. I don't know whether he didn't hear the question fully or misinterpreted what was being asked. But answering with "I marched with MLK" made it sound as if he took the question personally and responded defensively. No one was suggesting he was a white terrorist/nationalist for God's sake. Or is he afraid of ticking off the white base that the Trumpster bamboozled?

Whatever. Just not a good look at an important forum.

You are for good reason upset with those who adopted a Bernie or Bust stance during the 2016 election. That is NOT the same as "his followers". BoB's were a small subset of all of those who supported Bernie Sanders for President. I assume it is not your intent to do so, but posts like this one serve to anger Democrats who sincerely supported Sanders in the primaries and then worked and voted for Clinton in the General

"Certainly 'nobody but Bernie' was the campaign theme" is certainly false. That was NOT a Sanders campaign theme. A campaign there comes from a campaign. Words matter. During the debates Sanders repeatedly said that all of the Democratic candidates were "a millions time better" than Trump. Sanders endorsed Clinton for President BEFORE the Democratic Convention. He actually appeared at rallies on her behalf dozens of times.

I will be the first to admit that Sanders did not work nearly as hard for Clinton as Clinton did for Obama. Hillary Clinton deserves great praise for being the poster child of Democratic unity for what she did in 2008. Compared to her the contribution Sanders made in 2016 was modest. But it was still above average for a Democratic runner up historically. Compared to how Ted Kennedy, long recognized here on DU as a Democratic hero, treated Jimmy Carter, Sanders worked his ass off for the Democratic nominee. It's all relative.

Why must so many posts in this forum be slams at those who supported Sanders? It does not facilitate unity going into 2020 no matter how the primaries turn out.

Anyway, fair is fair and accurate is accurate. This is what I remember, for the record:

Former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders on Sunday discouraged voters from picking a third-party nominee, saying the issues facing the U.S. are too dire for a "protest vote."

"This moment in history for a presidential election is not the time for a protest vote," the Vermont senator said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

"It's time to look at which candidate will work best for the middle class and working families."

He said he didn't want to disparage third-party candidates, but he encouraged voters to pick Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton over Republican nominee Donald Trump.

This was anything but a positive response from them, or evidence of him being prepared in the least for this conference. I think the audience felt disrespected by this, and wasn't going to simply be silent about it.

There didn't appear to be much listening, patience, sustained interest in their questions, issues or concerns, just defensiveness that they weren't just smiling and applauding.

He seemed to be put out that they aren't reacting like crowds at college campuses, where they can't ask questions, they just cheer.

Maybe he thought that showing up to this would get people off his back about "relatability with women voters."

Many of his fans will say that it totally showed this, completely, absolutely - this audience of women just didn't "get" that Bernie knows what's best for them, and health care and minimum wage is really what they should be focused on.

In one on one interviews, his handlers stop the interviewer if Bernie gets irritated with the questions being asked. That wouldn't work here, unlike a town hall where the questions weren't screened and approved ahead of time. I don't think he can sustain listening for more than a few minutes at a time, and that's why he goes on auto-response even when it's unconnected to the question, trying to get back to some familiar ground where he can just block out the incoming questions.

No amount of talking about DACA legislation or immigration reform addresses burning churches and synagogue and mosque shootings.

How do you end white supremacism (a thought/mind issue) other than making sure you treat everyone equally and make sure that you express that as a value of the country and your administration?

Well, that should have been a question that Sanders and or his staff should have been asking before they knew they would be taking questions from those who by virtue of their skin color or religion are targets of white nationalists.

A simple google turns up several things:

1. Restore the Homeland Security Domestic Terrorism Investigation Unit that Trump disbanded. Fund their investigative and data collection activities fully. NO BRAINER. Why did he not even bring this us?

If these are things that a simple google search can produce, why didn't Bernie or anyoneone on his staff feel that this conference audience was worth even that?

Maybe if you are a white male, the threat to your church, your home, your children as targets of this growing threat isn't on your radar. That doesn't excuse a POTUS candidate who knows that he will be talking to an audience of people who are the targets of white supremacists from not bothering to learn about it. He blew this chance to show that he cared about this topic enough to spend 20 minutes to prepare for their questions, and maybe learn something about things that don't come up much in Vermont.

He said tackling sexual violence would require “not only specific plans and programs,” but “a fundamental change in the culture of this country.” He vowed to nominate judges “who will represent the needs of people of color, of working people, and who are prepared to believe and fight for justice, not just the people on top.”"

But after an enthusiastic greeting, Mr. Sanders seemed to lose the crowd somewhat. He did not discuss many policy details, and when asked what he would do for women of color as president, he talked instead about helping marginalized groups in general.

“For a lot of women of color, the challenge is we’ve heard that before,” Ms. Allison said. “If you don’t specifically call out those who are most marginalized, often we’re forgotten.”

How could anyone attend a WOC conference and not be prepared to answer questions about the issues that are most important to WOC?

Cringe-worthy seems to be the best description. I wonder if it would have been better (less harmful) if some excuse had been made to simply not attend.

But then again, in the long run, I think it's very important for people to be able to observe and develop their opinions based on the evidence of how someone performs, how prepared they are, and what they actually have to say.

that Sanders seems to have been expected to listen to questions from women of color and respond to those questions with relevant answers.

He failed to do so.

A white man who would not worry about behavior that was considered offensive or disrepectful to that audience might also likely be bewildered when told that he himself is being disrespectful or offensive in 'splaining to a group who was offended by it that they have no reason to be offended.

Fuck threats. It takes LESS effort to get dozens of excited NEW voters to support Democrats, than it does to try and placate just ONE butthurt malcontent voter (who, if they're willing to make such a threat, probably aren't going to vote for the Democrat anyway.) That's a TOXIC environment that's being created by people with that mindset. People who say such things only contribute to the division and suspicion that weakens the party.

Best to just let them do as they please, and instead use one's energy to motivate first time voters and swing voters to be enthusiastic about the Democratic party, our Democratic candidates, and our Democratic platform. These are the ones who'll be most likely to volunteer, donate, pound-the-pavement, make-phone-calls, and get others interested in Democratic politics as well.

All I'm trying to say is that I simply can't take seriously ANYONE who thinks they can THREATEN to withhold their vote because they're pouting and because they feel personally "insulted" when their preferred candidate is held accountable.

He did the same thing in 2016 by not campaigning for the black vote in the south. I think that was on purpose to not turn off black voters from Hillary for the GE. Bernie's the same as he was when he got into the race in 2016, he's a protest candidate who's trying to push the Dem party left. There are all kinds of candidates like that every Pres election, they're not actually serious about winning, they just normally don't become as big as he has.

236. Washington Post-Opinion: Bernie Sanders's week goes from bad to worse
Thu Apr 25, 2019, 01:12 PM
Apr 2019

Several things are surprising about this episode.

First, did he not prepare for a patently obvious question? You’d think a candidate so conscious of his need to overcome skepticism among nonwhite voters, who are a critical constituency in the Democratic primaries (especially African American women, who turn out in strong numbers), would be more conscientious about speaking to their concerns. Perhaps he still doesn’t understand that the same socialist wish list he runs through at every big rally isn’t what voters aggrieved by racism in the criminal-justice system, the glaring wealth gap between whites and blacks, and a two-tiered health-care system want to hear. (On the last item, it is noteworthy that “compared with their own mothers, American women today are 50% more likely to die in childbirth. And the risk is consistently three to four times higher for black women than white women, irrespective of income or education.”) This reflects a well-known Sanders trait — lack of introspection.

Second, Sanders’s tone-deafness really makes Monday’s proposal to let felons still behind bars vote seem like crass pandering. Rather than make an extreme proposal, which if anything undercuts legitimate proposals to re-enfranchise felons who have served their time, on an issue virtually no one is clamoring to hear, he might consider a bold move similar to a plan put forward at the same summit by Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.). That plan would wield the pardon power widely for the benefit of those (disproportionately African American) convicted of nonviolent drug crimes and give former nonviolent drug offenders job opportunities in the new, legalized pot industry. Sanders might show some willingness to study “reparations” (which do not necessarily entail cash payments but can take the form of extensive investment in high-quality housing and education for disadvantaged nonwhites who have lacked access to both for decades). At times, it really seems as though Sanders isn’t even trying to meet these voters halfway.

Finally, Sanders is getting shown up regularly on race issues not only by African American candidates but also by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who has included in virtually all her policy proposals specific measures to address racial inequality (e.g., an education plan that includes generous funding for historically black colleges and universities, a housing plan that includes “down-payment assistance to first-time homebuyers in communities that were once subject to redlining”).

The Root had a sad/humorous right on point essay: https://www.theroot.com/bernie-sanders-has-a-black-woman-problem-and-thats-goi-1834302198

I may need to go away for a few months. Then I will stick my head up again and see how the terrain is looking. This is a big oops for me. At least my 2nd choice, Warren, did well.

I will confine myself to hating Trump for awhile. He's a good poultice. Draws out the poison, the healing cells have a chance to work their magic and then in 2020 the Democratic nominee will isolate the poison.

Later, former Ohio state lawmaker Nina Turner, the most high-profile woman of color on the Sanders campaign, referred to the audience’s reaction, asking “in what world” was it appropriate for the conference attendees to boo Sanders for sharing his story of protesting with King.

Sanders’s finger wag — and Turner’s talk — suggest the Sanders campaign may continue to struggle to draw in voters of color.

By focusing on a 50-year-old anecdote, Sanders missed a key opportunity to explain what he’s done for women of color in the past 10 years and how he’d tackle today’s challenges. And when listeners expressed their frustration, Sanders seemed dismissive and unwilling to engage. The optics of a predominantly white crowd applauding Turner for chastising women of color only fueled this message more....
I
n this campaign, Sanders has an opportunity to do better with minority voters. Pushing back on voters who express concern is not likely to win Sanders more support from constituencies he needs to capture the Democratic nomination.

Sanders had two years to work on his messaging and proposals. Two years. And yet he offers no solutions to very real problems.

This is what vetting looks like. I don't think he was grilled like this the first time around. Or maybe he was but didn't bother to think about how to respond. It's puzzling.
