Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumVoting isn't just about what YOU want.
It's about what everybody needs, and over the long term, at that. In the presidential primaries, the eventual Democratic nominee might not be the one who was your favorite. But, there's a much larger picture to view. Right now, we have Donald J. Trump in the White House and Mitch (the Breaker) McConnell running the Senate. Just look at what has happened in just over 2 years.
We all have a favorite primary candidate. We all hope our candidate will be the nominee. But, some of us are not going to get what we want. It might be me. It might be you. But that's the system we have. Either way, come November, we have just one option that makes any sense at all. Either a Democrat will become President or a Republican will. Either a Republic goes to the Senate, or a Democrat goes to the Senate.
The outcomes in each case are very, very different, and affect everyone, not just us as individuals. Sometimes, we have to take a bitter pill that saves our lives. Sometimes we have to vote for a Democrat who wasn't our first choice. We do it anyway, because we're thinking not just of ourselves and our preferences, but of all of the other people around us who depend on how we vote.
I shouldn't even have to write this.

(146,262 posts)Yes. People should vote for their favorite in the primary. That's the whole point. If your favorite doesn't win, then you vote for the Democrat. You don't stay home, you don't vote for a third party candidate, and you sure as hell don't vote for the Republican.
Was my post unclear in some way?

(146,262 posts)I think, for some, it's either their favorite or nothing, and not just for one candidate.
We have an enormous field of primary candidates for 2020. Trimming that list down will take a few early primaries to accomplish. Some candidates who are people's favorites will not make the cut.

(1,898 posts)As a Sanders supporter, I was FURIOUS with the 2016 primary but voted for HRC in the general without compunction. I am convinced that Bernie will secure the nomination in 2020 but, should I be mistaken, I would repeat my earlier behavior. The nominee for the Democrats has my vote, guaranteed.
We could list 100+ issues on which tRump is a disaster but the climate crisis must top the list because, without swift action, in 2024, the damage will move from its currently extreme state to irrevocable and only the billionaires will have the means to inhabit the planet. Everyone else will starve or wilt under the unrelenting 140° heat.

(32,640 posts)to work, and fortunately it wasn't close, like it was in 2008.
If a candidate gets fewer votes, they don't get the nomination. That shouldn't arouse fury. Disappointment, certainly, if one's preferred candidate didn't get the votes, but surely not fury.
But, it's good to see that you got over that and sensibly voted for the overwhelming choice of Democrats. Not everyone was as mature.
