Biden to announce on Thursday...will give generously!

Former Vice President Joe Biden will launch his long-anticipated presidential campaign on Thursday, according to several people familiar with the plans.

Biden will announce his intentions in a video announcement and hold a fundraiser Thursday evening in Philadelphia. His first formal campaign event is scheduled for Monday in Pittsburgh, said the people, who were granted anonymity to speak frankly about Biden's plans.

"What was clear about the evening, especially when one considers the candidates who weren't there, is that there just isn't any room for Joe Biden this time around. A huge chunk of the party has moved on from him. There are plenty of people to run as pragmatic moderates; Klobuchar and Buttigieg did so on the stage Monday night. The left is locked up between Sanders and Warren. What does Biden bring besides name recognition, some old-line union support, and boatloads of money from sources that half his party is going to be running against?"

I agree. When the majority of the party's energy is coming from women, minorities and younger voters, a candidate with the baggage of Anita Hill, the 90s crime bill and the bankruptcy bill of 2005 is indeed likely to be a snooze.

Except for establishment Dems who desperately want a brave defender of the status quo.

Thu Apr 25, 2019, 12:31 AM
Apr 2019

you know that's what "undecided" means, right? Right?

I will say this: I want someone that Wall St. fears and even hates. I want someone the big money boyz don't: I want someone who won't take money from lobbyists or big donors of any stripe. I want someone who is full-on committed to confronting climate change. I want someone who doesn't buy into the Washington norm on military action. I want someone who is NOT bipartisan, NOT collegial, NOT conciliatory--I want someone who welcomes the hatred of the pukes. Is there a perfect candidate for me? If I could combine several there could be, but I can't. That is why I am undecided.

BTW, I'm sure you didn't intend to deflect but what does Obama, a man who hasn't been president for two years and can never be again have to do with anything? Hmmm? Name me one candidate in the Democratic Party who doesn't get that issue right, now. Obama got it right, with Biden's help if you like, and moved forward. Has Biden ever owned up to his mistakes, on anything I mentioned? Has he apologized for them? Has he moved forward? Or is he, like some, just hoping no one brings them up? Do you think that will work, in the primary or the general?

Our definitions of "ancient history" differ. Especially when the results of that ancient history are still in our faces every fucking day.

I think Biden is a relic of another age. I think he wouldn't break single digits in any poll if people were not nostalgic for Obama, as if electing Obama again would Fix Everything...as if that was even possible. I think that is a pleasant daydream, and completely useless.

Moving on.

Any of our candidates can beat that asshole.

Biden is actually one of the weakest possible candidates we could nominate. There's like zero argument for his candidacy other than he isn't Trump. Wow, you're better than one of the worst human beings alive today. Congrats. Where do you stand on anything else?

Nothing in his record leads me to believe he would be a good president. He's a throwback from a bygone era and does not represent where the Democratic Party is in the year 2019. He is completely the wrong person to lead the party and country into the future.

He should have just rode off into the sunset after the Obama presidency concluded as a beloved elder statesman. Now he's going to have his record fully dissected and people will realize that he isn't actually all that great. He let his ego get the better of him and it's only going to hurt him in the end.

Nobody wanted this guy to run 12 years ago and there was zero enthusiasm for his candidacy. Tie him to Obama and suddenly everyone is willing to overlook his dreadful record. Ridiculous.

I fully expect him to peter out though. Aside from his name recognition, he has zero advantage over all the other candidates. There's nothing that he has that everyone else doesn't do better.

58. Sanders complicated vision for gay marriage...people evolve.
Wed Apr 24, 2019, 10:04 AM
Apr 2019

'Obtaining Congressman Bernie Sanders’ position on the gay marriage issue was like pulling teeth … from a rhinoceros,” Freyne wrote. Freyne described repeated attempts to hear Sanders’ views on gay marriage, and the congressman only said he “supports the current process” in the state legislature. Though Sanders was not in the Vermont state legislature at the time, it was a hot topic in his home state at the time...'

“It’s an election year, yet despite the lack of a serious challenger, The Bern’s gut-level paranoia is acting up,” Freyne wrote.ecide the issue. Many prominent Democrats, including Sanders’ successor as mayor of Burlington and a gubernatorial nominee, spoke out in favor of gay marriage, but Sanders kept mum....

...But when Sanders was asked by a reporter whether Vermont should legalize same-sex marriage, he said no. “Not right now, not after what we went through,” he said...

...That same year, Sanders was asked in a debate during his first run for the Senate about a Massachusetts state court decision that legalized gay marriage. The debate moderator wanted to know if Sanders thought the federal government should overturn that decision. He responded by talking about states’ rights, which is an argument often used by politicians who have argued against federal recognition of gay marriage as well...

I believe the federal government should not be involved in overturning Massachusetts or any other state because I think the whole issue of marriage is a state issue,” Sanders said in the 2006 debate...'

The article goes in to say that it was not until 2009 that Sanders voiced support for gay marriage. People have evolved on this issue.

Nice that he changed some of his positions like decades later, but it's disqualifying to me that he couldn't see that being against the war in Iraq, not repealing Glass-Steagall, and supporting gay marriage were the right things to do when they were initially brought up for a vote. It's part of a long pattern with him being on the wrong side of history.

Pretty much every other candidate is superior to him as far as their records are concerned. I can't think of anything positive he brings to the table. "I'm the only candidate who can beat Trump" is a terrible message that is both uninspiring and unconvincing. If that's seriously the only argument he can make for why he's running and should be president, then he's wasting his time.

38. President of the United States,
Wed Apr 24, 2019, 04:07 AM
Apr 2019

Is not a King. There is a looong history of presidential nicknames, and catch phrases going for them, and many more than a few were technically juvenile.

Andrew Jackson’s detractors referred to him as “Jack Ass”, and in turn he both embraced it and made it the symbol of the Democratic Party.

Martin Van Buren was called, and referred to himself as “old KinderhooK” after his hometown.

James K Polk as “young hickory” because he was a protege of Andrew Jackson’s.

Abraham Lincoln - “Uncle Abe”

Chester Arthur - “Chet”

Theodore Roosevelt - “Teddy”

“Ike”, “the Gipper” ..

Heck in this race we have “uncle Joe”

Some are given by friends/allies, others by opponents, most make candidates and Presidents themselves more memorable. And for a Representative Republic, especially during election time, do more to make candidates more relatable (when flattering at least).

I love your protectionism of such a great candidate who happens to be in my top list, but I do most sincerely feel your dislike in this particular case is misplaced.

He obviously supports the moniker, his supporters say it adoringly, and isn’t something being used on him by opponents detractors.

Frankly, if he keeps raising in the polls, I anticipate the disparaging names that will be thrown his way by opposition will be utilizing his last name more than his first.

25. David Axelrod said Biden is the one the Trump people are most afraid of running against.
Wed Apr 24, 2019, 01:08 AM
Apr 2019

He said on Anderson Cooper tonight that "the Trump people and Republicans will tell you they fear [Biden] the most, "and they fear him because he is the one who "has a reach into those white older working clas voters who are part of the Trump base, particularly in the upper midwest." Ax said "remember, Trump HAS TO win Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, again; there really isn't another state where he is likely to pick up electoral votes, and Biden is a block on that." However, Ax went on to note that "the paradox is, the very qualities that make him an appealing candidate to those particular voters" may make him "out of step" and "uncompetitive" with today's Democratic Party.

the ones I talk to...INCLUDING DEPLORABLES....say they don't fear Biden.

THEY SAY THEY LIKE HIM. So as my dear old mother used to say ....I'll put that in my pipe and smoke it, and of course I mean that literally.

If the deplorables you're talkin to are saying they don't fear Biden, and being TRUTHFUL - big assumption I know!! - then those publicly saying they fear Biden the most ARE using what I call "don't throw me in the briar patch" reverse psychology... or, you saying something different?

I thing he's the best hope we have to stand up to trump. If he wins
I think he can do what Obama wanted to do but was blocked
because of the raciest GOP. Not trying to start a fight just my
opinion.
