Long lines form in Milwaukee as Wisconsin elections proceed under court order

Hundreds of voters stood in lines that stretched for blocks in Milwaukee early Tuesday morning to cast their ballots amid warnings about the spread of the coronavirus, a chaotic start to Wisconsin elections that went forward only after a last-minute legal battle.

Morning scenes at the polls across the city, which was able to open only five polling locations, down from 180 underscored the near-unprecedented challenge facing election administrators one day after Democratic Gov. Tony Evers sought to suspend in-person voting in light of the covid-19 pandemic, an order that was quickly reversed by the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

The decision was a victory for the state’s GOP-controlled legislature, which had declined to postpone the election and filed a legal challenge to Evers’s order, arguing it exceeded the governor’s constitutional authority.

Seething anger mixed with resolve at the end of the line of voters that stretched to about 400 people waiting outside Milwaukee’s Riverside University High School, which stretched for many blocks and snaked into nearby Riverside Park.

Rosie Redmon, 79, sat in her wheelchair at the front of the line. She arrived with her son and daughter-in-law at 5:45 a.m., knowing the polling location would be packed. “We decided to risk our lives to come vote,” said Ellie Bradish, 40. “I feel like I’m voting for my neighbors ...”

I think most states have some sort of vote by mail provisions. In those states we need to agitate to get voters to fill out forms NOW. In other states - we need to agitate to allow absentee/mail voting and early voting along with extending the voting window.

If we wait - we lose.

In New York State I needed to have another doctor write one for me! The issue needs to be addressed nationally. The current usurper in The White House has made clear why he opposes that vigorously. We really need to attack these problems state by state, creating activists in every zip code. We might actually take back a few more Senate seats and state legislatures that way. Alas, Democrats just don’t seem to take their daily responsibility to learn about - that’s key - and interact with government at every level as much as Republicans do. To them it’s typically as a transactional event, or a form of social bonding.

Start today and push back against current restrictions. I live in Idaho for god’s sake. A redder State you will not find. But we have one form that can be filled out each year to have ballots delivered to your mailbox and returned the same way.

I hope that with enough pushback - rules can and will be changed.

I voted there for a dozen years, all voting is by mail, but have to use own stamp or you could drive to a drop off box downtown area in Marysville.
Now I moved to Florida 4 years so things could have changed in WA.

If I can file taxes on-line, which requires lot more security, why not assign each voter a password and that way we can all vote from the comfort of home, on-line.

We already have the vote, though, and I am so proud of all those who came to elect Democrats and kick the Republican asses right back.

Congressman John Lewis needn't have worried, but he would have been speaking out anyway for every last vote he could get out.
