Sanders is most likely to have his ass handed to him in Florida, Illinois and Arizona today. Will he see those outcomes as a signal, or will he ignore them? Fortunately, the primary is headed to a string of big, democrat governor led states, that makes republican's chances to ratfuck things limited - there simply are no more republican governor or Secretary of State led states left that are big enough to matter outside of Ohio . In the end, what Ohio is doing won't matter for the democratic primary, but it sets a dangerous precedent for the General.

Do you not understand that? If we're saying it's too risky to hold an election right now, then you can't do an about face and say, if the situation is equally bad in November, or ten Novembers from now, that it's reasonable to hold an election. This is the problem. Once that genie is out of the bottle, and we've got governors defying the courts to postpone an election, you just gave every possible jusitification to do it in the future.

And your last comment is just naive.

Here's a list of states with Republican governors that have gone Democratic in at least one of the last three elections:

Florida
Iowa
Maryland
Massachusetts
New Hampshire
Ohio
Vermont

We may find this election comes down to Iowa or Arizona (also a Republican governor).

But you'd be a hypocrite if you are here advocating for the postponing of an election due to this health crisis and not advocating for such if it were to happen again - and this time in November.

Suppose a Republican governor did such a thing in November. What do you think that'd do to Democratic turnout in the rest of the country? Trump didn't win by a big margin, you know.

> But you'd be a hypocrite if you are here advocating for the postponing of an election due to this health crisis and not advocating for such if it were to happen again - and this time in November.

Actually no, postponing a primary election (the timing of which isn't vital as long as it happens before the convention) isn't the same as the November election the timing of which is specifically provided for in the Constitution.

Woohoo!

As to your last point - it's irrelevant. Your whole point is irrelevant. You can't have it both ways. Either it's absolutely vital to keep people out of the polls or it isn't. The stakes of the election, or the timing, is irrelevant. See, this is where your whole argument falls apart and why it's so flimsy in the first place. If it's about the actual health of the population, and there is no reasonable way to hold an election without risking the lives of millions, you can't suggest that automatically just changes in November - unless you're willing to admit that it's not the well-being of the people that's at the root of the issue here but the expendability of the election.

At the end of the day, precautions can be taken, as is the case when people go grocery shopping (which is still permitted in Ohio mind you) to not only uphold the Democratic process but also do so in a safe manner.

But what you don't seem to get, or refuse to acknowledge for some silly reason, is that once you justify postponing one election, especially when you defy the goddamn courts, you've opened that door to it happening again in the future. Sometimes all it takes is that one moment to change the mentality and justification of doing it. Then next thing you know, 20 years from now, elections are scarcer than ever before.

If we could hold an election during the Civil War and the Spanish Flu and World War II, we certainly can during this pandemic. In fact, we better get used to the idea because it's possible if we're going to have ANY election between now and the end of the primaries, we'll have to do it with these limitations.

That goes for Democratic states like Pennsylvania. If Ohio cancels outright, that means there's not going to be an opportunity to postpone and move it down to a later date - in that scenario, it's hard to imagine ANY primary happening.

Again, we just set the precedent.

How is that not going to disenfranchise Democratic voters? Regardless who's responsible - if no votes are held, that means we'll have to select a nominee who didn't win a majority of the delegates within the primary process. You don't think that'll have ripples? Are you naive?

A nominee will be chosen by party leaders (DNC members from all states and the DNC Chair) - the dreaded "Establishment". That will set off a firestorm that will play in November.

Senator Sanders can gracefully end this today, if what I expect to see happens. He could say that the will of the great majority of democratic voters is clear, he is suspending his campaign and that Representative Gabbard should suspend her campaign also. Would that be the same CDC in this article:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/rachelsandler/2020/03/02/how-the-cdc-botched-its-initial-coronavirus-response-with-faulty-tests/#64025d04670e

The problem I have with trusting the CDC is that they work for Trump...and Trump demands personal loyalty.

You might want to read up on Dr. Redfield, the current CDC director...his recent performance leaves me with many questions...

The first confirmed case of COVID-19 was discovered in the US on January 20th, 2020 while Redfield was serving as director of the CDC. Redfield testified on capitol hill on March 2nd, 2020 about the outbreak of COVID-19 in the US. Given the lack of testing on patients and healthcare workers requesting testing, Democrat Debbie Wasserman Schultz asked Redfield about who was responsible to ensure testing could be performed on individual who needed to be tested. Redfield could not name a specific individual and attempted to dodge the question. Eventually, Redfield looked to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of infectious disease at the NIH, who stated, "The system is not geared to what we need right now... that is a failing."

people who haven't voted would have plenty of time to request an absentee ballot and send it in. In Ohio absentee ballots can be requested up to three days before the election and only need to be postmarked by election day.

elections are counter to everything that is going on in terms of spread containment in most all advanced nations (and the federal and state actions going on now in the US) then it is madness to try and ram them trough. Millions of people flocking together across multiple states is a viral-spreading nightmare. ALL the primaries need to be postponed.

which, in Ohio, is about as functional as the US Senate

They are trying for to be in-person early and absentee balloting up til June 2, with a "normal" election day on June 2. We are used to not having an early enough primary to have much say in candidate choice--thought this year was going to be different!
There WILL be fights about this in court, I have no doubt.

There is time to go to all mail ballots before the election.

There was good and bad in this decision. As a former Poll worker they would be putting at risk hundreds or thousands of poll workers at risk in a long, hard 15 hour day, more in a lot of cases.

I know I will be requesting an absentee ballot from now on. We used to get a notice, but Jon Husted killed that.

Additionally, a candidate in a contested Republican primary for Wood County Common Pleas Court filed an action in the Ohio Supreme Court alleging the delay of the primary violated election laws.

Corey Speweik of Bowling Green filed the case against the Wood County Board of Elections and LaRose, arguing a “judical fiat” could not change the election date. His lawyer, Andy Mayle, condemned the late decision: “We think they waited on purpose until the 11th hour.”

But I will be requesting absentee from now one.

The State hous gang is as bad as the Senate. Sherrod Brown was more angry than I have ever seen over Mitch going to Ky, losing 4 days. Many Democrats went after him, too!
