Clyburn: Biden Should Pick An African American Woman For VP

House Majority Whip James Clyburn said he wants former Vice President Joe Biden to choose an African American woman as his running mate if he receives the Democratic nomination.

“I really believe that we’ve reached a point in this country where African American women need to be rewarded for the loyalty that they’ve given to this party,” Clyburn told NPR.

“So I would really be pushing for an African American female to go on the ticket,” Clyburn added.

Clyburn named several African American women politicians who he believes could be potential vice president picks for Biden, including California Sen. Kamala Harris and Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nominee and voting rights activist Stacey Abrams.

Clyburn also referenced Reps. Marcia Fudge of Ohio, Val Demings of Florida and Karen Bass of California as potential choices, as well as Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

Biden can be tough, certainly, but he is genial by nature. The role of the VP is to strongly counter the BS from the opposition and Harris would do so without hesitation.

so she doesn’t enhance the ticket on a geographic basis. Plus her record as a prosecutor won’t attract progressives.

Abrams or Val Deming are better choices.

She DOES balance the ticket geographically. And we wouldn’t risk losing that Senate seat. It’ll stay true-blue. California will choose another Democrat to fill it.

Don't you want to win a swing state like Florida, Virginia or North Carolina? Or would you rather Trump get re-elected?

If not VP, she should play some role in the administration.

I'm personally partial to Kamala Harris for VP (my dream team Harris-Warren or Warren-Harris), but the article in the OP has lots of great names.

Joe and Val Demings would also make a good team.

A running mate needs to match up and compliment the nominee and provide more broad benefits like being charismatic, intelligent and have strong background that makes people feel comfortable that person could handle being POTUS should something happen to the President. Kamala is an amazing speaker and would be a great attack dog for Biden. Also, issues with her prosecutor background has been greatly exaggerated by many on the left. In fact one could argue her being a tough prosecutor could actually help in the general.. not withstanding progressives having issues with it.

And experience totally doesn't matter. If it did, Trump wouldn't be President.

The choice of a VP needs to enhance the ticket from a demographic, geographic and ideological basis. Harris works demographically but doesn't either geographically or ideologically. Abrams and Demings do.

Most likely we win NV and NM regardless but AZ would be a big pickup.

If you look at recent history most VP's arent picked for their state. Kaine-Virginia (solid blue now); Biden-Delaware (hard blue), Gore-Tennessee (hard red). There were picked for other reasons that complimented the nominee.

I just think Harris is superb candidate and matches perfectly with Biden and in 8 years could very well be our nominee.

Biden was for demographic balance as well as appealing to voters in swing states like Virginia and North Carolina. Gore was picked because he was a moderate and to help stem bleeding support for Democrats in the South.

And a Hispanic pick would help better in Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico than Harris.
