Why a Biden-Klobuchar ticket can beat Trump

There’s a lot of talk that former vice president Joe Biden should pick a progressive or a person of color for his running mate if he does become the nominee. That’s an understandable and conventional view, but it’s wrong. He should instead emulate Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign and pick someone with a similar appeal to his own: Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.).

Clinton faced a challenge similar to that which Biden would face: how to win back blue-collar Democrats who had defected to the Republicans. He won the nomination by campaigning as a new type of Democrat — someone who shared the party’s traditional support for a strong government while recognizing that rising crime and welfare abuse were real problems. Biden’s calling card is that he can win back the same type of voters who defected to back Donald Trump in 2016, enabling Democrats to reclaim some of the former “blue wall” states in the Upper Midwest whose surprise defection elected Trump. Clinton could have done the traditional thing and picked someone associated with the old Democratic Party as his running mate. That would have reassured those people that they wouldn’t be shunted aside during his administration. Instead, Clinton doubled down on his approach and picked someone who, like him, was a young, Southern reform Democrat: Sen. Al Gore of Tennessee.

(snip)

Klobuchar would do for Biden what Gore did for Clinton. Like Biden, she is a traditional center-left Democrat who builds bridges rather than walls. She is comfortable campaigning in moderate tones while being unafraid to dust it up with Republicans and highlight their differences. As she often said when she was a presidential candidate, she’s carried red and blue areas of her home state with ease in three straight elections. Blue-collar former Democrats won’t be scared by her, and she would reinforce Biden’s message of national healing.

She brings another advantage to Biden that Gore could not bring to Clinton. As a woman, she would have distinct appeal to blue-collar women, who are likelier to switch back from Trump than blue-collar men. She also has appeal for educated suburban women, another key Democratic constituency, as a successful lawyer and professional. Keeping those demographics in line is essential to Democratic victory in the fall, and Klobuchar adds to Biden’s underlying appeal for them.

(snip)

Picking someone to his left would allow Trump to attack Biden for being a closet socialist. Selecting Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) would clearly delight many progressives but would then worry suburban moderates. .. Nor does Biden need a person of color on the ticket to increase minority turnout. Biden’s political resurrection was fueled by black voter support. He doesn’t need a black vice president like Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) to spur their excitement. Picking a Latina might theoretically help him with Hispanic voters, but is there a seasoned Hispanic woman who can plausibly reassure voters worried about Biden’s stamina or competence? Picking a Hispanic man such as Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Tex.) or his twin brother, former HUD secretary and presidential candidate Julián Castro, would also create problems with the Democrats’ powerful female contingent. Better off not creating problems when you don’t have to.

She also has appeal for educated suburban women, another key Democratic constituency, as a successful lawyer and professional. Keeping those demographics in line is essential to Democratic victory in the fall, and Klobuchar adds to Biden’s underlying appeal for them.

Sun Mar 8, 2020, 09:18 AM

the assumption that the African American electorates trend the same everywhere doomed us in 2016. Detroit and Milwaukee in particular were keys to the margin of victory, and there was clearly an enthusiasm gap among black voters in those cities in 2016 vs. 2012. The same approach that works in South Carolina and Alabama doesn't work the same in the Upper Midwest, where the potential black vote is often younger and more alienated.

I think Amy Klobuchar is an excellent senator, but her support among black voters isn't as strong even in Minnesota. These factors should be weighed in building a ticket.

Fri Mar 6, 2020, 12:55 PM

Amy has performed almost zero percent with POC. The MN NAACP had called for her immediate suspension from the race. Black people voted for Joe out of faith. If he were to nominate a woman like Amy with no support in the Black community, they would see that as a betrayal. You would potentially leave a lot of Pete supporters feeling very lethargic and uninspired after Amy lied about Pete in the debates with the whole "would rather be watching cartoons" story. There is unity at the moment, but it could be shattered with the wrong pick. Amy is far too contentious to be a good VP pick.

The Minnesota NAACP demanded that Amy drop her race because of her track record as a prosecutor and one young gentleman in particular who she would not allow him to go to his mother's funeral.

Do you really want to go through a general election having this drudged up in commercials?

POC gave Biden the springboard to Super Tuesday thanks to Jim Clyburn. Amy had almost zero Black turnout at her events in SC and left early without completing tours of a county that was set up for her because she felt it was a lost cause.

Harry Reid had to call out Amy for the way she was treating staffers when he was the Majority Leader of the Senate.

We have to be smart, put our feels away, and look at why and how a VP nod for Biden is going to affect an election. Biden's pick is going to be crucial to his general election as Joe has not committed to a second term if he were elected.

Joe has to be smart about his pick and who could carry a second term. With zero percent support from the AA community, picking Amy could tank his candidacy.

The letter also characterizes Klobuchar as a boss who was “there for [staffers] after a loss in the family,” and someone who “pushed [them] to be better professionals and public servants” — two statements that contradict allegations published in the Times that Klobuchar made employees pay back money earned during their paid parental leave in certain situations, and that staffers cried “all the time” over Klobuchar’s treatment of them.

Amy had nothing to do with the trial.

https://www.hennepinattorney.org/news/news/2020/February/myon-burrell-statement

The context is important. This case is being politicized because it first arose when Amy Klobuchar was the Hennepin County Attorney. The case, however, involves the murder of an 11-year old girl, and the person who has been convicted twice of committing that murder. Amy Klobuchar was not the trial attorney on the case. It should not be treated like a political football. This office will continue to focus on the facts and will not let the politics of the moment influence that review of the facts.

It also should be noted that the second trial - the conviction for which Mr. Burrell is now in prison - was obtained by this office after Amy Klobuchar had left this office and with no input from her. So, any complaints should be directed to this office, have nothing to do with Sen. Klobuchar, and it is inappropriate and unfair to try to make them an issue in the current presidential race.

No, not to head the ticket but certainly as the second.

No one expects you to read all the new posts to realize it, but just from the start to compare her to Palin is a bit too much.

Fri Mar 6, 2020, 06:27 PM

I never said Amy was politically inept like Sarah.

Though I have the belief that Amy could sink Biden's ticket like Palin did to McCain.

Amy created a lot of bad feelings with Pete supporters with her lies.

She has even less recognition than Pete did with POC.

POC elevated Biden and to turn his back on POC would be a massive mistake when every vote is needed in the fall.

You may not like my thoughts, that's fine. But I thought being a Democrat meant we didn't have to have group think like the GOP.

Agree about Amy - she's just not a good candidate. She's from the Midwest and did poorly in Iowa. I don't see that she has appeal to any particular group.

A pick such as Kamala would also get the soccer moms that Amy would get, while adding color to the ticket, and possibly helping us in the Sunbelt states like AZ and GA that have large nonwhite voting populations.

See what the staff actually thinks.

https://www.thecut.com/2019/02/former-staffers-defend-amy-klobuchar-in-open-letter.html

“We previously worked for Senator Klobuchar, and some of us were among the former staffers contacted by the New York Times and other media outlets to share our experiences about working in her office,” the letter reads. “We do not believe these reports adequately describe our thoughts on Amy Klobuchar, many of which we shared with the authors.”

I'll leave to others to debate whether she's a good choice from a political / general election POV. The VP pick seems overrated from a election standpoint but considering Joe's age the VP might be heir-apparent, perhaps even in the first term. Most of the top 10 or so candidates no longer running offer at least something to a potential Biden ticket and it seems hard to single one out as being especially useful.

The governor of Minnesota is Democratic-Farmer-Laborer. (That's what we're called in Minnesota.) We have got to consider whether anyone who comes to work for President Biden could be replaced by a Republican. Consider what happened in Arizona after President Obama elevated Janet Napolitano to be Secretary of Homeland Security: the dangerous Jan Brewer became governor in her stead.

Fortunately, Amy isn't just a "safety choice" - she'd be a good president in her own right, and she's only 60 years old so she'd be young enough to be elected president after Biden's two terms.

In a five-year period from 2014 to 2018, according to GovTrack.us, Sen. Klobuchar’s allegedly browbeaten staff helped her co-sponsor 1,967 bills—more than any other senator except Connecticut’s Richard Blumenthal. Another study, conducted in 2016, ranked her No. 1 in the Senate in lending her name to bills that were enacted into law.
