Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBernie Running as a Democrat
By allowing Independent Bernie Sanders to run as a Democrat we are letting him run against all other declared Democrats. This is a good thing. Bernie could be like Ralph Nader and say, "I'm running as an Independent in both the primaries and also the General Election regardless of how I do in the primaries". He has millions of followers and if he ran as an Independent he would certainly split the vote and hand the Presidency to the Republicans. Instead of complaining about his being allowed to run as a Democrat we should be thanking him for doing so and showing the respect to not sabotage another Democrat who might get our Party's nomination.

He repeats the same talking points over and over. He has a long career in the Senate sponsoring bills and usually before he does he tells us what he is going to do.
For all that he has little real wins on the books. So the question I ask is why do people follow such a talker with little to show for it.

I will run as a Democrat, accept the nomination of my Party, and I will serve as a Democrat if elected. I understand that signing this form does not supplant any legal or Party requirement by any state or territory to qualify for ballot placement in that jurisdiction.
Further, I acknowledge that in submitting this form to the National Chairperson of the Democratic National Committee, I am subject to the provisions of Rule 13.K of the Delegate Selection Rules for the 2020 Democratic National Convention and Article VI of the Call for the 2020 Democratic National Convention that authorize the National Chairperson to determine whether a presidential candidate has established substantial support for their nomination as the Democratic candidate for the Office of the President of the United States, is a bona fide Democrat whose record of public service, accomplishments, public writings and/or public statements affirmatively demonstrate that the candidate is faithful to the interests, welfare and success of the Democratic Party of the United States, and will participate in the Convention in good faith.

"At the time a presidential candidate announces their candidacy publicly, they must publicly affirm that they are a Democrat." (VI. Presidential Candidates)
Finally, I don't think many, if any, are "complaining about him being allowed to run as a Democrat", but they're concerned that he run as an EQUAL to all the other Democrats who are running and that he follow the same rules that everyone else are following.

(10,721 posts)I don't really take as much issue as some with Sanders temporarily changing his party affiliation in order to seek the Dem. nomination (the bigger problem is his bashing of the Democratic Party). And preventing him from running would be a PR nightmare, so the DNC rule change is effectively meaningless. But he's certainly not owed any gratitude for *not* running as a 3rd party candidate. No more than any of our other candidates are due gratitude for not running as a 3rd party candidate.

Politics is a rough game and I think there may be some contentious debates among all the candidates (Clinton vs Obama in 2008 had some pretty serious bashing as I remember). Being a life long Democrat doesn't assure anyone of anything in regards to the future. Republican Senator Richard Shelby was Democratic Senator Richard Shelby before he suddenly switched parties. In the case o0f Bernie Sanders we at least have a track record to go on. He entered the Democratic primaries in 2016, lost the nomination, and endorsed the Democratic nominee and did not run against her in the General.

And candidates must affirm in writing to the DNC chairman that they "are a Democrat... are a member of the Democratic Party; will accept the Democratic nomination; and will run and serve as a member of the Democratic Party."...
But some Democrats, Clinton supporters in particular, partly blame Sanders for her loss in 2016. They feel that by not embracing the party label, Sanders sowed a sense that there wasn't much difference between the parties and, therefore, between Trump and Clinton.
Clinton, herself, wrote in her book What Happened that Sanders did "lasting damage" to her candidacy and that he never wanted a Democrat to win.
"He didn't get into the race to make sure a Democrat won the White House," Clinton wrote, "he got in to disrupt the Democratic Party."
She called him "fundamentally wrong" about the party, ticked off the things Democrats have done and noted, "I am proud to be a Democrat and I wish Bernie were, too."
